@BeddieKU23 And they’re still capable of beating FSU because they have Michael Porter.

If a player who’s played in 1 game + 2 minutes with less then two weeks of practice can be the difference in a win for them I tip my hat to Porter. I’m banking he’s just a big name not ready to do his best which is what he looked like in the SEC tourney

  • @JayHawkFanToo Ahem. That was not me or you.

  • @KUSTEVE

I know. Regardless of how the team looks at some point in time, I know Coach Self will get it straightened out and the only question is how high of a seed KU will be.😃 👍🏼

  • (Warning, I’m about to talk out both sides of my mouth)

So I picked Puke to beat KU in the Elite Eight.

BUUUUUUTTT, part of me thinks a) they’ll be more fatigued than we will, and b ) we step up against big time programs, especially when we’re dogs.

Damn, I almost talked myself into changing my pick!

  • So we play a team that is worse than any team we’ve played since December in the first round. All we need is three “real” wins to reach the FF, and we’ll be a solid favorites in at least two of those. Not that daunting.

  • @chriz Duke is soft and we will tear them up if our bigs can avoid foul trouble.

  • One game at a time. Survive and advance.

  • People actually picking Penn to win is amazing.

  • Penn went 2-7 against teams with winning records.

  • @chriz if it comes down to where we make it through and possible match up with Duke – Bagley & Carter going to be a bad match up. - - For sure Devonte going to have substantial advantage over Duval - Newman on Tripper Boy?

Michael Porter is a top 5 draft pick, he’s a difference maker. The SEC tournament was him knocking the rust off.

I expect he’ll still be knocking the rust off against FSU. FSU has had time to prepare against him as well. They matchup well with them

You know I wandered about this myself. However I’ve come to a different conclusion. I think KU is a nightmare matchup for both MSU and Duke.

KU plays a 4 and 1 style. Meaning if either Duke and MSU try to man up with just big boys in the paint, it might not be such a no brainer.

Not to mention if Coach did want to mix up and go with a two big offense? I mean Doka and De Sousa? Then throw in Mitch who has shown he’s a better help side big. UMM Just saying.

Also lets not forget KU is playing some really good ball right now. With De Sousa, and Newman step up. KU is going to be hard to beat. I don’t care who you are.

People forget that it’s a two way street regarding matchups. They might play big, but that means Jackson or Ward is going to chase Svi, Lagerald Or Marcus around the whole floor.

  • Let me pose this question. If you are a team with title aspirations in the NCAA, which is the last team you want to see In your bracket or which team you really don’t want to play regardless of who you are ? My answer would the KU.

    I’m glad Cincinnati isn’t our 2 seed.

^^^^^^^ This. As someone said before, we are that hot-shooting guard oriented type team that people always talk about could go on a run in March. It’s why they play the games.

  • @JayHawkFanToo

I would fear KU if I were an opposing team because if they are hot from three, you can’t beat them. KU has shown that they can hit 15+ threes in a game. If they do that, you’re probably sunk, regardless of how well you play offensively because you’re most likely trading threes for twos. So I agree that KU is a nightmare matchup in that respect. You don’t want to catch them on their one hot night, because your season is probably over.

On the opposite side, though, as a KU fan, I worry about that one cold night. As KU fans, we aren’t worrying about just one game. We have to worry about each step along the journey. That’s what makes it harder. KU will almost certainly shoot someone out of this tournament before everything is said and done. But they likely won’t win it, because they will probably have one cold game that ends their season.

Same reason as an opponent, I would worry about playing Arizona with Ayton (what do you do if he goes for 30 and 18?), Alabama and Sexton, or Mizzou with a healthy Porter. Those teams likely won’t win it because they have flaws, but their one lottery pick could carry them on a given night to end your season. But if I were a fan of those teams, I would worry that the ride will be short because I can’t imagine those guys carrying a team past the Sweet 16.

Remember how KU just dismantled Purdue last year in the Sweet 16? How great they looked? I certainly do. But I also remember what happened two days later. That cold shooting night is lurking. If KU can keep it at bay (and get some good slashing games from Newman) they might be able to survive it this year. But it is lurking.

That’s why defense, rebounding and versatility on offense are so important to advancing. This team has shown to be capable of the things I listed at certain points and will need to in a tournament game prior to the final four, just like last year.

  • @justanotherfan I think the key to winning the tournament is being able to win that one bad game. The off shooting night. It can be done; ‘08 survived Davidson on an off shooting night, then it was on! Looking back at that box score KU could’ve been stomped, hard. Steph was 4/16 from three. Thank goodness for that awesome D causing a mutual off shooting night by the opponent.

I agree with you big picture and am concerned about when the missed bunny brick-fest that sinks us seemingly every year will rear its ugly head. But last year against Oregon I firmly believe the two quick fouls on JJ completely changed the complexion of that game and what we were able to do offensively.

Even if that hadn’t happened, I think we still would have lost. You could tell in the first five minutes that they had no energy or bounce in their step. That’s what needs to be avoided. That and playing smart when playing shot blockers.

I had to listen to that game on the radio, so I did not see the “bounce” of lack thereof for myself. I’m sure that played into things, but how deflating is it to lose arguably your best player 3 minutes into the game? How much of that factored into their lethargic play?

We talk a lot about refs and foul discrepancies. I’ve generally argued that I could care less about the discrepancy. A foul is a foul and should be called. I say the timing of the fouls and when they are called has a bigger impact on the game results. A box score may show that the fouls were fairly evenly distributed between two teams, but it doesn’t tell the whole story.

KU and Oregon both had 13 total fouls in that game, but only JJ had four. Yet, Jordan Bell, who had 8 blocks and pretty much aggressively tried to swat everything in sight, somehow ended up being the only starter on both teams to have only 1 foul. I generally don’t like to blame refs for losses, but that never sat well with me.

Anyway, I’m going to stop writing about that game. I can feel my blood beginning to boil just typing this.

No, you could tell from the first possession - it was pretty clear and never changed the entire game except for a brief period in the second half. By that time, it was too late.

The reason Bell had eight blocks and one foul is because they played stupid, not smart, basketball. It is plain dumb to try to float shots over a good shot blocker, and yet we see our guys do that continually, or we see them try to dunk over someone like Konate. I really wish the staff would work on this with them, but we see the same things over and over and over.

Basically, it wasn’t the refs, but the typical Self style elite eight game (also called choke) that resulted in the loss. They beat themselves.

  • @BShark They have KU going out against Auburn??? Yesterday the same publication included Auburn in a list 6 of “top seeded” teams who were in danger of an early out.

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/ncaabk/opinion-six-top-seeded-teams-in-the-most-danger-of-losing-early-in-the-2018-ncaa-tournament/ar-BBKahz0?li=BBnb7Kz#image=BBEPWe0|1

  • At this time of the year, everyone with a microphone or a column/blog makes outrageous prediction that if they come through they look as geniuses otherwise nobody really remembers or cares; win-win for them. Some predictions are so outrageous and idiotic that people remember them for a long time, i.e. Jack Smack.

  • @BeddieKU23

I would not mind playing a team whose big start shot 5-17 from the field and never got to the FT line.

  • BShark said:

Penn went 2-7 against teams with winning records.

wow and we are worried why? Hope its 2-8 after today

  • @BeddieKU23 Yeah. People are trumping them up because they are good numbers for a 16 seed but still, they aren’t very good.

  • If this is a different team, and the narrative is truly different – and by all indications it is – this is a 20 point win.

However, if we revert to the roller-coaster, to the inconsistency, well, good grief.

We’re different now, I believe. This is a team that has found itself. It took a while. Doesn’t mean we are a lock to get to the FF. It just means we’re a different team.

  • @HighEliteMajor

What do you think? Roller coaster or changed team after yesterday?

  • @BeddieKU23 nerves? Playing tight? Peaked too early?

  • HawkChamp said:

@BeddieKU23 nerves? Playing tight? Peaked too early?

All the above maybe. Likely style of play for Penn had something to do with it. It was close when they controlled tempo and when KU was able to get the lead and keep it, it was because KU had finally pushed their own pace on them

  • @BeddieKU23 I think we’re still on a roller coaster but the valleys might be less severe. Still gun shy a bit. I don’t sense an upset tomorrow. SH is a good team. This is the kind of game that I think focuses this team. Not a lot of time to think about it. Might be better for us. But I think we all see the risk. We won’t be blind sided if we lose.

    I agree with that.

I expect better Saturday, Seton Hall is the type of team we’ve faced all year. I would compare them to Texas Tech.

Hopefully that was the team getting their nerves, tightness out of the way.
