Question for everyone about the site - need input

  • I’m totally flexible with what you need to do and just appreciate that you’ve given us this opportunity!

  • What you and your support team have done is amazing and however you want to handle things is your call.

If you do have to start over, is there away to keep the history under a different site such as KU Buckets Archives, or REV 1, or go to KU Buckets 2 moving forward?

  • Totally don’t care either way. Whatever you want to do. I don’t ever access any old posts, and it wouldn’t hurt my feelings at all if I lost my reputation stars. LOL. Come on, some of you know that’s what you’re worried about. Bahaha

  • Flush.

    Upgrade.

    Restart.

  • Banned

I’m cool with whatever we need to do. I’ll be here either way. I will say this though sometimes delaying the inevitable can be worse than just staying the course. All I ask for is if the change is going to happen let us know when.

  • “The only thing that is constant is change”

  • @icthawkfan316

No matter what happens I’ll always remember you as Reputation 475 | Posts 438

  • @DoubleDD

If memory serves…didn’t the old site give us like 24 hrs notice before FaceGate?

  • @nuleafjhawk

I pictured you as a mid 30’s early adopter (technology that is).

Is your Jayhawk avatar flying over Fraser?

  • What’s the record for most consecutive posts?

  • @VailHawk six.

@approx I’m fine either way. It would stink to lose all the old posts/reputation, but they will all come back eventually. And hopefully better. However if the upgrade is anything like upgrades on a few other sites I used to frequent it’s more of a downgrade 🙂 I’m comfortable in this site, but if it can be improved go for it! It definitely would be better to do before the season starts; just give us the lowdown on how to work the new and improved site if possible.

I can’t wait for basketball season!!! I’m ready for actual basketball news and less speculation. Let’s see this shiny new team play already.

  • @dylans you messed up vailhawk’s attempted record !😊

  • @dylans

    Well played!

  • I’m leaning toward putting this one in moth balls somewhere and moving to a newer version to get the latest features and fixes.

I can live with starting over, but I hate losing all the history. I really wish there was a way to have this site sitting somewhere for reference, even if it was frozen and uneditable.

  • @bskeet " I can live with starting over, but I hate losing all the history. "

OK - You’re not from Vegas. @approxinfinity - if you ARE from Vegas, blow this SOB up and build something shiny with big-boobed hostess’. (sorry - i was in Vegas in my head).

If you’re not from Vegas, I’d say let’s slap a coat of paint on it and keep rollin. You’ve done enough work already.

Go on vacation. Maybe to Vegas…

  • @VailHawk Mid 50’s geezer. I was in on the early phases of home computers, but good Lord, the technology advanced so quickly. I got over the initial shock and awe and now I just use computers to check the weather, mapquest and KUBUCKETS.

I’m not sure where the avatar came from - I think I just googled it one day a couple of years ago and it was one of the many that came up!

  • @VailHawk

Or to put it another way:

“The only thing that changes is constancy.”

  • @approxinfinity - I would agree with @bskeet; would like a way to access old stuff. But whatever you think is best. It’s a new season anyway. Really appreciate your time and efforts. I think the site operates great now, but if there’s better stuff, we can go with the flow.

  • I love this site.

I greatly value and appreciate the content and the work of approx, bskeet and others.

…but I hate nodebs (spelling intended).

Having to scroll and scroll and scroll to get to the new stuff is a pain, and just doesn’t work on an iPhone without wifi.

There is a mainstay of application architecture: separate presentation and data management. Here the data is in a “black box” so any problems and we just start over.

I am for starting over; however, it would be best to start with something where the content is distinct from the interface so each can be fixed without impacting the other.

Having said this, I am sure it would be extremely disruptive to replace node** with something else, so let’s just move forward.

I suppose having a site by season is not such a bad thing anyway.

  • @approxinfinity-The off season is when I use the history aspect of the site to catch up on threads, thoughts, & general board rat knowledge that keep me fueled for the real competition. I work more hours, have many more time consuming chores, and there are times when I don’t have the opportunity to read much for maybe a week at a time because of responsibilities to other family members. The ability to access the archives would be the only reason I can think of for keeping the status quo if it is truly necessary to rebuild the site. When you are as old as some of us & set in your ways change can be a witch to adapt to, but I think if something is really broken it should be fixed. There have been times when I’ve encountered some tech issues also, but it’s not a big deal as long as we can still talk hoops & still shoot the breeze with each other. Some later than others, we all learn the most cherished things in life are not what you gain & gather to keep, but really what you share with others. Even if we all remain anonymous, that doesn’t mean we cannot have friendship on this forum, so if we do have a place we can all share thoughts & try to contribute or just remain silent & enjoy the thoughts & perspectives of others, that is, by far, the most important thing to many including yours truly. I’ve been tickled pink this site been mostly devoid of jerks, trolls, or buttheads like commercial sites are saturated with, so my hat’s off approx. Do whatever you wish to do & understand you’ve my gratitude no matter.

  • @globaljaybird

    +100

  • @approxinfinity I would support either way. If there is to be an upgrade, and if I may suggest the impossible, is there a way to retain just an archive of those posts that have been rated/deemed PHOF?

  • @approxinfinity Is there a way to migrate the old data? Do you have access to the DB? I’m a programmer by profession and would be more than happy to volunteer my services migrating the old data to the new version. And to echo others, I fully support whatever you decide and I really appreciate the effort you’ve put into this site. Thanks.

  • I would hate to lose some of the discussion we have had, but if the only way to improve the site moving forward is to reboot, I’d rather do it now than wait until October or November and have to reboot when the board is busier and the discussions will be more lively.

My other concern is whether some of our longer threads will cause issues if we don’t upgrade now. I’m not savvy enough to know the difference, but if that’s the case, I think we need to do that now so that we don’t run into future problems.

  • @Crimsonorblue22

I think all blogs but that one seem to be working. There are a lot of videos on that one, could that be a problem? I know squat about this!😳

This would not be an issue. Only the link to the video (YouTube?) is stored and when you open the thread in your browser, it loads the videos directly from the source.

  • @JayHawkFanToo maybe I learned something! This place is full of good people!!

  • @approxinfinity Another thought-- if you killed the one offending thread, would you be able to migrate the site to the new platform? I think it might be worth sacrificing one thread for the benefit of everything else… And if we were really concerned about losing something valuable in that thread, I’m sure we could work to manually recreate it…

  • @bskeet

I believe the information for the thread is there, just not reachable from different places. There are post of mine that do not show up on the thread but I can see them from my personal page, which would seem to indicate a broken link for the “thread name” field in that record. This is not an uncommon occurrence for databases and on the ones I use, I have several tools to fix the links/pointers/indices. Actually, the post after the last one that displays is likely the culprit. If the raw data can be accessed, deleting that post or all the posts after that might do it. Again, this is just speculation on my part since there may be other issues we are not aware of.

  • @bskeet it’s not just that thread. There was some stuff earlier on that got corrupted.

Thanks for everyone weighing in. You guys are wonderful. I think I will take another stab at migrating and reach out to the nodebb guys if I can. I saw your post @jayhawkfantoo I will let you know what the errors I see are. Do you have an email I can reach you with?

  • @approxinfinity

I wonder if partially corrupted post and identity data of undetermined extent knowingly either stored, or migrated to, a new platform may raise legal exposure to exploits in a complicated way.

    Consult a lawyer?

  • Backfill here. 😃

  • @approxinfinity change is hard but I am for it

  • @approxinfinity

I sent you an e-mail to your gmail address.

  • @approxinfinity

Whatever you decide, I want to thank you for this online experiment. It has been remarkable and greatly appreciated by many!

  • @approxinfinity I am just a contestant on your game show. It’s your call. I am good either way and still on vacation!

  • @jaybate

JB will you pull some strings w some of your ShoeCo pals and get them to sponsor Kubuckets 2.0?!?!

  • @VailHawk

Suggestion: you start a new shoe brand holding company called “Globally Untraceable Bailouts Petro-Ware” with incorporation in Lichtenstein and a P.O. Box in Vail, CO. Then I snail mail you a proposal to sponsor KUBUCKETS 2.0!!! 😄

  • @jaybate

LOVE IT!!! I just need your SS# and mother’s maiden name…cool?

Are you still jaybate at gmail? Or will you send me your us.gov email?

  • If it means losing some of our members and their longgggg posts, then by all means do it!!! All Malice All Harm or something like that.

Since you are asking, I’m fine, but I’m not very technically inclined so I don’t even understand why you’re thinking you need to change it, which is fine with me.

  • @wissoxfan83

    Going long has become normalized.

I can’t keep with our prolific posters any more!! So: I’m staying.

  • @jaybate

    Love house of cards!!!
