Sosinki Thread V2

  • Welcome, Mr. Sosinki. May all your fouls ring their bells.

Does this take up a scholarship? I always figured it wouldn’t because he already has one for the FB team but when you think about it, that doesn’t cover all of the expenses (hotels, flights, etc.) that he will now be getting with the team. I never really knew to what degree a walk-on has to pay their way.

    No. He’s a walk-on for football, so won’t take up a scholarship.

  • As an aside, how great would it have been to get Mitchell Robinson? He had a decent chance at getting eligible after Braxton Beverly.

  • @RockkChalkk A walk-on pays for all school expenses like any other student. The team pays all basketball expenses, and for all team related activities. If travelling with the team, they get the same per diem for food & expenses.

That was something I meant to bring up a while back and forgot. I think we dodged one there. Heck of a talent though.

  • We have an open scholarship, correct? So if DeSousa doesn’t come and fill it, then could give it to Sosinksi for the semester it would seem.

He is a walk on for the KU football team too, he is a walk on tight end. - - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • Do walk-ons earn free room and board? Are they entitled to share in monthly stipends which scholarship players receive? If they are not allowed, at least, to receive free meals then their commitment is one heck of a charity gesture…risking orthopedic well being for a slice of notoriety or fame.

  • Walk-on are students who pay their own way. They are given access to the equipment and team facilities. They can travel and eat with the team on the road for free. But that’s it. They are not given financial assistance for their play.

  • @dylans So, when they are living with the team, like Tyler, they are still paying room and board? Makes sense.

  • Walk-ons are warriors. Akin to the athletes in the less heralded sports (i.e. rowing) that have all the responsibilities and none of the scholarships.

Video at the end pretty much confirms that the Lawson’s are not able to handle Dok’s load inside. Sosinki was brought on to bang with Dok, awesome! Dok needs challenged by big bodies too. He can score over length unlike Lucas or Ellis, but he labors to do so. I hope the big practice body helps him to develop quickly. Dok’s development is the lynchpin to this season assuming no post additions.

Sosinki’s big load will help teach Dok the importance of being in good position and how to get there.

  • @dylans

Actually, members of all the women’s sports such as rowing get a full rides since because of Title IX, there is plenty of money for women’s sports and available money is not allowed for other men’s sports. This is why at KU there are 10 women’s teams and only 7 men’s teams even when money is available. KU cannot even field a men’s soccer team. The men’s basketball team has only 13 scholarships available while the women’s team has 15 and so on.

  • Coach said last night on is weekly hawk talk that Sosinski had impressed enough that he had changed his time line. He had impressed enough to earn a uniform and spot on the bench.

Said though doesn’t mean he will play, he wouldn’t play ahead of other guys yet. - which I’m taking means at this point in front of Mitch & Clay. - -BUT anybody wanna bet he plays sooner then later?

Self was impressed by his Basketball IQ & physical Strength. - Will wear number 55. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • Would be nice if he can spell Doke in end of game situations where we have a comfortable lead.

I mean anyone would be useful right now.

  • @JayHawkFanToo I was just going by my sisters experience on the rowing team at WSU. Gear, travel expenses/ lodging, and road food was provided. That’s it. No housing on campus, on campus meals, books, or classes are paid for.

  • @dylans not all women athletes get scholarships. There are walk ons in track too.

  • Also, different sports have different scholarships. For instance, softball has 25-30 players, but only has 12 full equivalencies. This means that they can give partial scholarships or full scholarships, but no more than 12 full scholarships, whether that’s 24 half rides, 12 full rides, 18 two thirds rides, etc. Most players get something, but very few get a full ride. Aside from football and basketball, few sports actually offer full ride scholarships to anyone other than the very best performers.

  • So who goes in first tonight, Solinski or Clay? Will Solinski end up stealing minutes from Mitch?

  • @kjayhawks

I would imagine not this soon.

  • Hard to say what Sosinki will offer us over time.

But the immediate impact is we get a big body who can take space in the post and has 5 fouls to give us.

It would be great if he becomes more than that. But in the least, we get this!

  • @kjayhawks

Coach Self said in hi presser that they might let Sosinki suit up but he will not play.

  • @JayHawkFanToo Makes sense, he needs to learn stuff. Thanks.

  • Here is the link; go to the 1:20 mark.

  • @JayHawkFanToo that’s from a week ago before he was officially added to the roster, if it’s a blow out I bet he plays.

  • On Monday this is what Self said “We’ve decided that he’s going to suit up for us. So he’ll travel with us,”. “That doesn’t mean you should expect him to get in the game, stuff like that. Because he wouldn’t play ahead of other guys yet.” Obviously I wouldn’t expect him to play a ton but what if Mitch and Doke get in foul trouble against this zone? You ether play 6’4 180 pound Clay Young or 6’7 260 pound Solinski at the post.

  • Let Young play some tonight we should be in a comfortable situation to get him some minutes.

  • Despite what HCBS said, I’d love to see Sosinski on the court for a bit.

I think that when it is all said and done, we will be seeing him on the court sooner then later. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @jayballer54 I bet if it’s a 30+ point win he gets in. It will be nice once Sam can go so then we don’t have starters on the floor in blowouts. You could play Teahan, Young, Sam, Mitch and Solinski. Right now we don’t have the bodies to sit our main players which isn’t good IMO.
