UNC Placed On Heavy Probation From NCAA!

Today, UNC was placed on probation by the NCAA. They will be restricted from making and consuming smores for two seasons. All UNC players are considering their options.
No Courage Athletic Association… or perhaps money changed hands.
And where is the Department of Justice?
This is the kind of BS that makes me want to turn off college basketball!

@Bwag I don’t know if FBI would have jurisdiction or not. Department of Education should definitely be looking into UNC after what they admitted though.

Department of Education could probably withhold federal fund but the accreditation groups would have the biggest voice if the withdraw accreditation. Student would not go to a non-accredited school.

@JayHawkFanToo I believe the DoE is responsible for accrediting universities if they receive federal money.

School are accredited by regional and national, public and private accreditation agencies which in turn are recognized and approved by the Department of Education. The Department of Education itself does not accredit schools but recognizes the Accreditor. To receive federal funds, a school must be accredited by one or more of these accreditation groups which in turn must be recognized by the Department of Education. Withdrawal of accreditation would have to be made by the group that granted the accreditation in the first place.
When this issue first became known, I seem to remember the accreditation group that deals with UNC starting an investigation but I don’t believe it ever acted on it. Losing accreditation would basically mean the end of business for a school. I would guess that it ever happens it would be restricted to a specific program and more likely would be probation more so than a permanent loss of accreditation.

UNC was put on probationary status in 2015, lifted in 2016, by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Good, I guess I had all the correct information but I just did not remember they had actually been placed on probation…my memory is not what it used to be…

Roy just went and spit into the river after this NCAA decision. Good job Roy. You continue to lose my respect with each issue that your program endures. Oh, you’re taking “plausible deniability”? Ok…that’s ok, you pretend and allow those fake classes. You continue to crank out those ignorant, poorly educated players at UNC. Wow, Dean Smith would be proud of you. I thought Roy was a good ol’ boy and cared about the game of basketball. This doesn’t say much about your program and your players Roy. I would raise hell and demand that your players be given high academic standards. Wait, you’re UNC…never mind.
But it’s the NCAA? Wrong. The coaching staff, AD, and others knew this was taking place. You keep winning those NCs Roy.

This is the culture we live in. As long as he is winning he will be untouchable, once he starts losing the same people that are protecting him will turn on him. If he is smart he will retire while he is on top; considering his age and health it might not be a bad thing.

Spot on with your post. Roy should be better than this.
My only hopes are that when UNC makes their next Final Four, the sparkly sports media will run a short clip on UNC’s “struggle.” They use that stuff to put “sports drama” into the production.
That’s all I’m hoping for now. Pitiful.
If this happened at Kansas I would be crawling out of my skin. I’d probably sue the university for degrading the reputation of my coursework there.
Students pay a fortune for their accredited education, and this is what they get? Sure gives credence to online diploma mills… at least you can go that path without financing your life away.
The traditional university education is under heat now. The future of these magical places is unknown.
All of this makes me sick.
