Marcus Garrett SR Highlights

  • Courtesy of the Shiver.

  • @BShark I think he makes a significant impact in his first year. Guards in Self’s system develop much quicker than bigs, and this guy can flat play.

  • @KUSTEVE

Kid is a STUD BEAST. Unless KU lands Duval (which I think we all pretty much strongly doubt) then Garrett starts the season as the 1st guard off the bench with Graham, Newman and Vick starting.

  • @BShark I agree all the way. He is absolutely perfect - unselfish, very bb smart, can certainly score, and doesn’t mind driving the ball. Several of his drives remind me of Frank- several of his 3 pointers remind me of Wayne.

  • @KUSTEVE totally agree! I feel most are saying we need another impact guard with out referencing him. He has potential to be Vick 2.0 and then some, seems he might have better ball handling than Vick though. Really excited to see another guard grow in our program, just honestly wish we had some more big man journeyman lately. Really miss seeing big man development lately which I know we were all cheated this year with Dok but be nice to have another one on the line.

  • @KUSTEVE

Yep. He was extremely well coached in HS, not often that a coach formerly at a P5 school is coaching HS ball. So he already knows what it’s like to play in a structured offense. No AAU distractions either.

  • I think he will be a stud.

But he has one very major thing he needs to work on. Going left. He either doesn’t have the confidence to go left or can’t finish in the lane left handed. If you notice, anytime he goes left it was either a jumper or a pass. Easy to scout and guard if that is the case. Josh Selbe had that problem. He couldn’t use his left hand. Something a summer on CBB would have helped do. For a lot of these guys, they are so much more athletic they don’t have to ever use their left hands to score. Not saying he won’t be able to ball, just saying that is a major hole in his game.

  • @Kcmatt7

Needs to work with Bruce! :p

  • @Kcmatt7 Rush couldn’t use his left either. Or so he was told so he used it too often. I hope we don’t see this type of overcorrection to this criticism. I think his draft stock is low enough that it won’t be a mild distraction like it was with Rush.

  • Love a lot about this kid, especially his length. I’m a little worried about his low release point on his jumper though. Fast closing, athletic defenders will block that. He does have a quick release, and his height will negate that to some degree. Either way, this kid has me excited. Senior year Tyshawn made me fall in love with tall guards who can drive the ball!!!

  • Looking at the highlights, there are things to like and not like.

    Things I like:

    1. He’s athletic. Always important as you move up a level.
    2. He’s got good size.
    3. He has good body control when taking contact
    4. His jumpshot mechanics are fairly sound (more on this later)
    5. He handles the ball well
    6. His court vision and court awareness are good
    7. He’s aggressive to the rim and will finish with a dunk (important when you get to college and those shots are challenged).

    Things I don’t like:

    1. Not going left as observed by @Kcmatt7
    2. His jumper is more of a set shot than a jump shot. Additionally, he got very comfortable in high school pulling up over smaller guys (he’s 6-6 and probably was guarded by guys smaller than 6-2 nearly all the time). That won’t be the case in college, so he may need to get more lift.
    3. Unsure about his acceleration ability
    4. The highlights don’t show him actually defending any perimeter guys. Can he get down in a stance and stay in front of guys?

He will be good. He has the skillset for it. The question is how much adjustment he will need to deal with since he is so used to be so much bigger/stronger than his opponent every night.

  • @justanotherfan

    Pretty solid take.

Fwiw the word on him back as far as when he committed to KU was that he needs to work on his shot. Considering where guys like Frank ended up, I’m confident he will improve it.

As far as defense, we only have the word of people that have seen him play full games, since defensive fundamentals will never be put in a highlight package. However I have read, from different places, that he is a very sound and committed defender.

  • @justanotherfan

I believe Preston is 6’-9", right?

  • Kid is going to be one special underrated player that will play under the radar.

  • Kudos to all on this thread! After yet-another-Bill-Self-March-underachievement, this is where the excitement starts to regenerate for me: what do we have already signed to the roster?

I’ll avoid all those threads where KU fans are down on their knees in begging-position regarding undecided 17-18yr olds like Duval or Tarczewski, blah, blah…I only care about a kid once he’s actually a jayhawk.

Excited about Garrett, great points by all above.

  • @justanotherfan

There are some video’s showing his defensive ability on youtube

  • Garrett will end up the best recruit in the KU class. He might even end up one of the best in the entire class when its all said and done

  • @BeddieKU23

That’s a bold prediction. I hope you are right, though because I think Preston is going to be pretty special.

  • @justanotherfan

I expect a lot out of Preston, he’s highly ranked for a reason. But we are getting one season out of him (getting the Lawson transfer sealed that) so I think when its all said and done Garrett will have a more lasting impact in the program

There’s a lot to like about Garrett and it seems like he will have some kind of role as a freshman but will be counted on in 2018-19 and beyond. It is a bold prediction but I’m confident he’s going to be a good one here

  • @BeddieKU23

I will agree with you on that because Garrett will be here longer as you said.

However, I measure things by impact on the individual seasons.

For example, who had the greater impact at KU, Frank Mason or Andrew Wiggins? The answer is easy in that it was Frank, but if we don’t pair Frank with a surefire top 3 pick like JJ and probably two other future pros in Svi and Devonte (and possibly a third in Vick before its all said and done), is Frank’s impact consensus player of the year, or just a small guard that tries to do too much?

Put another way, if Wiggins had gotten the PG play that JJ did, would his impact have been greater? Probably.

So looking at next year, the question is how much can Garrett help with each group he is with that will determine his overall impact. Can Garrett ever get us over the top because of his own skill or improvement year to year? I don’t know. How about Preston? Maybe (still way to early to tell and I need to see him defend).

  • @justanotherfan

Great question. I don’t know for certain but it would seem as though Preston will be the overwhelming favorite to have a greater impact next season. Pairing him next to a monster at the Center spot plus 3 NBA caliber perimeter players should help him as Jackson was helped by the players around him this year. Billy & Marcus are likely to have different roles. Preston is most likely a shoe-in to start (if we take Self’s comments about him after Bragg’s departure to heart) and Garrett will be battling for rotation minutes at one of the wing spots.

Statistically Preston is likely to have the bigger impact getting more minutes. Garrett will most likely try and bring consistency to the bench rotation providing solid defense, some scoring and facilitating. Both have chances to be irreplaceable options on this team as Self has more depth and options to work with.

I’d say in the future Garrett will have a great chance once he’s fully acclimated into the system and is counted on for production. Pairing him with the Lawson Brothers, Cunliffe and whoever else returns from the 2017-18 roster will be an interesting and exciting core of talent.

  • @BeddieKU23

I agree. He might end up being the steal of the class. Rivals has him now at #38 and he might well be top 30 when all is said and done.

  • @JayHawkFanToo

He definitely feels like a steal right now. Of course things can change once we see him on the court but Marcus just looks the part of a player we are going to really enjoy for 3-4 years. I felt similarly when we landed Vick that we had stole one away from under people. Vick is still on his way to proving that. I expect a big year from him. If Svi does not return he really has an opportunity to put himself on the NBA radar next summer.

  • @JayHawkFanToo

I would say based on when he signed and his ranking at the time he could easily be the steal of the class. When KU locked him down, he was really only getting looks from some of the Texas schools iirc. If he had waited, he would have got more big offers imo.
