Recruiting Master Thread Part Deux

@BShark did he commit elsewhere and then change his mind? thx!
-
NCST who recently switched coaches.
-
Like another Brannen Greene?
-
Nah. More of a 1/2 that can handle the ball whereas Greene was a 3/4.

@KUSTEVE looks like a child!
-
M b going to remain at Duke
-
@blackmild33 think he’ll get any more time?
-
2nd video was his JR year so he would have been 16-17.
-
@BShark what do you think?
-
About him as a player? Mentioned it earlier. I think he would be a good take.
-
@BShark yeah, sounds like you like him! Thx.
-
-
Looks promising…
-
The Phog is not taking this offer well.
-
@BShark maybe more are leaving than we thought.
-
I stand by my earlier prediction that Graham and Svi stay while Bragg leaves. If that all happens and Bragg is replaced that’s still two open scholarships, and Self likes to fill them even though it ended up not happening for this year. Hell he took EVAN MAXWELL which was just mind blowing.
-
@BShark So who is this MS ? I can’t find anything about him being offered by KU. Don’t see mention on any other sites. - -Was it just a twitter thing or what? - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
He’s tiny.
-
@BShark need a strong 4, juiston maybe?
-
Same size now as Devonte who obviously isn’t huge but also isn’t a midget. I can’t find any recent highlights, just stuff from before his SR year from the most part when he was a little bit shorter and thinner.
This isn’t a kid that will get much time next year though. It’s more to fill out the end of the roster and have a kid develop while planning to have him contribute in year 2 and beyond and I would imagine the staff is being upfront and honest with him about this. Also potentially a bit of insurance for the 18 class but without a doubt is a kid the staff will recruit over if they can, but if he develops well and produces that’s fine too.
-
@BShark looks like he could still grow!
-
Real good chance at Juiston no doubt.
-
I’m sure. I see absolutely no downside to taking a kid like Allen to fill out the roster.
-
I have not followed recruiting much lately, so, if Coach Self can get one more player, which player would that be?
-
Interesting. Very good shooter. KU could have 7 guards next year…
-
@BShark Love the humility of Allen with that tweet. We must get this kid.
-
Ran across a Scouting report on Allen, off the Kentucky board. as he is one of three guards that they are still recruiting this year now, - -Not sure who the report came from but looks like from Gerry Meyer:
It says - - -Shooter, Can Score , Not overwhelming athlete at all, Not a guy with physical presence, BUT is very skilled, especially in terms of very good shooter.
Listed at 6’2 - -180 lbs. - - - Listed Schools of interest: KU - - Michigan - - Tennessee - -Providence - -Auburn- - Butler- - Nebraska- - Xavier- -Kentucky. - - - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

The goal is probably 7 guards 6 posts. Of course that’s hard to do these days when players want to play. People seem to think this Allen offer means Graham is leaving. I don’t.

So what I said?
I wouldn’t worry much about UK here fwiw.
-
@BShark He looks about 4’9" and 90# in the video. 6’2" 180?!? No way he’s near that size in his highlight clips. If he’s 6’2" with a decent wingspan that’d really help on D. Short arms hurt on D.
I’m ready for a more disruptive defense.
-
Those are all old. Not sure on his wingspan though.
-
@BShark He doesn’t look anywhere near as long as Devonte’ or as tall. So I’m glad to hear that.
-
Yeah. I guess we’d find out for sure if he ends up at KU. Either way though, I don’t think he contributes next year.
-
FYI, NC St people think Allen to Kansas has been a done deal for weeks. Someone that know’s the Allen Family to further clarify
-
I was just popping in to relay this here. Seems like it’s pretty much a done deal.
-
Is Allen really a good option? He is ranked #149, 3 star by Rivals and the Schools he visited in addition to NC State were St Louis and Nebraska. He seems more of a mid major recruit to me but I really don’t know much about him.
-
Kansas Kentucky Michigan Texas Xavier Butler Auburn Providence Tennessee Ohio State
If you suck, then you probably don’t have this many solid programs coming after you once you re-open your recruitment.
Also he shot 48% from 3 this year on a pretty high volume. Obviously it’s a big step up to D1 ball but that’s nothing to sneeze at. Looks like a solid program player if he toughs it out.
-
Im never thrilled with 3 star guys either.
For every Mason and Graham we’ve had a Royce Woolridge and Rio Adams.
-
The staff passed on pursuing Waters and is going after this kid. I find that interesting.
Royce was a really early take too, like SO year in HS early. That really hasn’t worked out much for KU (Peters, Greene, Frankamp) but hopefully Markese bucks that trend.
-
Also worth mentioning that recruiting services get pretty damn lazy when a kid is committed to a school like NCST. Considering that all his highlights are from last summer at the latest it’s possible he needs to be re-evaluated by most of the services. Not saying he is top 50, but he is probably a lower end 4*.
-
There is a big difference in recruiting after the season is over and most of the quality players are spoken for. At this time, all programs are scrambling to fill available schoolies and any available player becomes a lot more valuable and a hot commodity. Remember that KU picked up Evan Maxwell from Liberty University a couple of years ago and he was in demand because there were not many players left?
This is the list of schools on the ESPN site as of April 4…
-
…and this is the one on Rivals…
As you can see, neither is really an impressive list. Just sayin’…
-
@JayHawkFanToo Thomas Allen is ranked 81 on ESPN. Low end 4 star. A solid pickup if he can shoot as well as he did in HS and run some PG. Would be a great combo with a guy like Jacobs. And HCBS obviously likes running two points if he can.
-
Garret played PG in HS and would make a decent PG considering he is now 6’-7" ,averaged almost a triple double for the season and is considered one of the top dunkers in Texas, so he is obviously pretty athletic.
-
@JayHawkFanToo In some of the videos I’ve seen he looks like he is oozing with potential.
-
He’s a take if we are filling out the roster which is hopefully what this is potentially.
Excellent shooter, that is his calling card. Most highlights you will see him filling it up from the perimeter. He might be a 3 star on paper but Allen has always had a rep as one of the best shooters in his class.
Being from the Northeast and knowing some people that have gone to Brewster I asked about him. They both said he could play at Kansas but it will depend on how much he develops his body and point guard skills. As @BShark said he shot 48% from 3 on a large volume of shots. My one friend said he’s the best shooter to come out of Brewster in memory. He also said he has a good mid-range game and grew a couple inches this year alone. They both said he’s ranked about where he should be but that in the right system would be a solid player by Jr year if developed right. My other buddy said think Tyrel Reed for KU comparison.
Our track record with Brewster kids is pretty darn good. He was part of an undefeated squad this season. Brewster has a great coach and he makes them play both ends.
Wasn’t asked to play point guard much because they had Makai Ashton-Langford a top 30 prospect that just de-committed from UCONN.
If you look at our roster and assume all our guards return we have the potential to lose up to 4 of them after next season. Graham & Svi to graduation, Vick & Newman will most likely be testing the draft process. I’m not saying all 4 are gone but Vick/Newman will have plenty of chances to show they are NBA ready next season. Having another guard developing with Garrett & Cunliffe seems like a great thing to be planning for.
We’ll see if he ends up here.
-
@JayHawkFanToo I’m just afraid that Garret may have literally grown out of that spot. Being 6’7 and spending two years with Hudy will probably make him more of a 2 or 3.
And, worse case scenario, we are adding a phenomenal practice body (compared to some of the walk-ons we’ve had lately) and a sharpshooter for some offensive spark on occasion. Well worth a 12th or 13th scholarship.
-
Who are we in on in the 2018 class? I don’t expect us to get Bagley, Langford or Zion. Only names I’ve heard are Grimes and Dotson. Haven’t heard good things about post players and we need some of those.
-
You can count on ESPN and Rivals being dead wrong frequently. And yes you are accessing the site now, but they are extremely lazy and slow to update. They made sure to get Kansas in there because it’s all over and he is probably ending up here. The list I cited comes from a guy involved in the North Carolina recruiting scene (where Allen is from).
Evan Maxwell was not in demand. Why Self took him is a mystery, and unsurprisingly both parties quickly moved on. This is absolutely not the guard equivalent of Evan Maxwell who was LOOKING TO TRANSFER TO DIVISION 2 BEFORE KU CAME ALONG.

Yep it’s not complicated we need another smaller ball handling guard that can get the ball up against pressure in case of injury/emergency. We were an injury away from TBONE this year, I’m sure that’s been in the back of the mind of the coaching staff.
Yeah Garrett is not a PG. Per Bham/MS the staff views him as a 2/3 with very good handling and passing ability for that position. But NOT a PG.

Grimes and Dotson are the names right now. Seriously. We will find out more on post targets later. I fully expect Gordon to decommit from SLU and for KU to quickly get back involved there, but that has to actually happen before we will hear anything about it.
