Big 12 Tournament of tears

  • @DoubleDD I agree. This team WITH Josh on the floor is ultra tough.

This team WITH Josh on the floor can absolutely win 6 more games. 6 more.

This team Without Josh? Middle of the league. Ok maybe top 3 or 4 because BIFM!

But still, TCU just beat us because of Josh’s apparent inability to keep his head screwed on right off the court and SVI’s Hulkamaniac ego showing up at the last second and Hulk Smashing that player, allowing those three game winning free throws.

  • @Lulufulu

Josh and Mason are the alphas on this team 💯

  • Coach said Vick getting his 2nd foul first half hurt us the most

  • @Crimsonorblue22

I won’t disagree with that. Foul issues forced more double post play.

  • That’s not why. Forced us to play subs that don’t play much and didn’t give our starters any rest

  • Banned

    @Lulufulu

Go easy on Svi. Remember he is still younger than Josh. He cut his teeth in Europe ball. It’s a big change trying to play American ball. In fact I loved that fact he had the tenacity to go up and block that 3 point shot. That doesn’t happen very much. Sadly it didn’t work out for him, but you have to admit for a split second everybody was like Holy Cow Svi blocked it?

  • Newman I think will be next year’s alpha assassin. Preston and Cunliffe both give me flake vibes.

Subs that are post players because we only had 4 scholarship guards.

  • SO, we lost this game. We now get to reflect on whats next.

WIll KU Still get a 1 seed after getting bounced early?

  • Yes

Yes there is no doubt. Can’t find 4 stronger resumes.

  • @BShark couldn’t take Svi out either

  • If KU isn’t a one seed I expect a crazy long post from @jaybate-1.0

  • @DoubleDD Yeah, you’re right. To be honest, I didnt see that SVI got a piece of the ball. I thought he missed.

Im not mad at SVI, at all. But still, had he not bowled that guy over, we may have won that game.

  • @Crimsonorblue22 said:

Just all around tough situation with no Josh, but Josh needed a suspension. Hopefully this focuses the team.

    I expect one anyways 😏

  • Does this hurt Frank for POY?

  • @kjayhawks said:

Does this hurt Frank for POY?

No. He already clinched it imo.

  • @HawkChamp I would not be real upset to lose the one seed. What really scares me is, no #1 has ever lost the first game. Some day it will happen. %'s bound to catch up eventually. I do not want that to be KU. We would never outlive that hanging around our neck. Every team in the Dance can get hot from 3. A flat game by their opponent and it will happen. Then every year at tourney time, that is all the talking heads would be talking about for eons to come. Even winning the first game, I would rather play the 7-10 than the 8-9. You have to win four to get to the final four no matter where you are seeded, and they all will be tough games.

With lots of rest and healing time, wishing our Hawks the very best.

  • @BShark … and you’ll enjoy every minute of “I told you so.”

  • Kinda feel bad for all our fans that paid for the whole weekend.

  • I hope Baylor crushes KSU, already hearing nosie from then losers.

  • @kjayhawks you pay for those tickets it’s a crap shoot! Ha ha

  • @KUSTEVE I could not agree more. Anyone acting as if our team did not try their best to win should really be ashamed of themselves.

  • It’ the AFC Championship Game all over again. Wow. Opponent pulls our player down on top of them and we lose. What in the world is going on with that.

  • Not worried about this loss in the least. It helps KU if anything. I’ve never seen Self call a timeout when we’re a stoppage-of-play away from the TV TO just to get guys rest.

Now, rest up. Throw away the garbage alternate uniforms, don’t drive anywhere and focus.

  • @kjayhawks agreed. Hope baylor wins big. But regarding the remainder of the tourney…I guess my rooting interest is texas? 21 loss team with some talent would be intriguing.

  • Does this loss really matter as long as we’ll get the Midwest?

  • TCU deserves to dance. They played a hell of a game to beat us.

  • I don’t think there is anyone still wondering why Self is going after JUCO post players after today’s game.

  • @kjayhawks Frank scored 29 points with 6 assists, 3 boards. Don’t think that hurts a POY resume!

  • @approxinfinity TCU wins one game and they deserve to dance? What about all the other teams that deserve to dance? You beat #1 “overall” seed and you deserve to dance? KU plays like hell to overcome hell, and with one loss we may lose our #1 seed? Hell yes. This is what everyone wanted. They got it. I will be shocked if KU keeps #1 seed in Midwest. Lunardi “said” we clinched our seed with the 13th B12 Conf Championship. We’ll see how the committee handles this loss.

This is the problem with NCAA March Madness. You can’t reward a team for ONE big win, and then penalize an extremely consistent team for one bad loss. We all know KU will pay hell for this loss. Bill Self himself even said KU was not deserving of overall #1 seed. I knew this sheet would happen after the stupid #1 OVERALL albatross seed.

  • @truehawk93 People talking we may keep our # 1 sed but do we stay in the Midwest - -a 1st round loss in the tourney hurts. - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @nuleafjhawk I had the same thought, but I still have the Badgers, maybe they’ll get bounced early too!

Glad I was at the four letter word this afternoon and couldn’t participate in the chat. Watched it on DVR, was chagrined, but not overly worried about the result. I love to see us win, but I don’t think this loss hurts us a whole lot.

  • 34-4

  • @BShark

You meant articulate, thoughtful and witty.

You kind of handle crazy for me. 🤓

  • Please someone remind me why we care? I know, we want to win. I did too. But ….

If we don’t win the National Title, we won’t worry about this.

If we do win the National Title, we won’t worry about this.

And, now, we get rest, which eliminates at least one excuse (hopefully) if we lose short of the title.

And, the rest can help us win the title.

Everything that matters starts next week.

  • Ok…Shake it and take the time to get ready for the BIG DANCE.

No more of this crap or it’s season over.

  • For the most part we don’t care…I would argue that winning the conference tournament and staying sharp while going in with momentum might be better than rest…and possibly getting rusty. Didn’t we lose the conf. tournament in 08? Most importantly…hopefully a loss emphasizes the importance of playing defense more than the high scoring wins we had this year. Maybe a wake up call?

  • @nuleafjhawk What on Earth 🌏 are you talking about ?

  • Heard the sprinklers ruined the court at McCarthy hall. Think a bb hit a sprinkler head. This was while the team was in kc.

  • @globaljaybird I was childishly responding to your statement about us being a 1 seed.

  • It’s like the announcers said at half time on a couple of different ESPN channels. In the long run - -they said this doesn’t change a thing. They said KU had just won it’s 13th straight conference championship - -and their main goal which is still their main objective is to win the National title. - -They said winning the post season Big 12 tourney would of been just a little added bonus but in no way did it change anything about winning the national title. - -they said actually it might be a blessing for us to get the extra rest. - - Which actually is true, just kind of a bummer but you figure without Josh I think we had to realize there was a chance - I mean I mentioned before the game I was a little worried about the boards - -We all know Josh is worth 3 points and 5 rebounds, just step back - -re-focus and here we go. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • ESPN noted that the last two NCAA #1 seeds to lose in the opening round of their conference tourneys were UK in 2011-12 and UNC in 2008-09…

…both of which went on to win the NCAA title.

(Edit: not in their opening rounds)

Buck up, Bucketeers! All we can do is try to cheer our guys on. Bitching and moaning afterwards never changed a loss into a victory, and being spiteful about guys who have been working their butts off for KU is just ugly, really ugly.

  • @mayjay

I am with you. Now, the team has gotten the loss out of its system and does not have to worry about a streak. Hopefully they can now relax some, rest and concentrate in winning the next 6 games instead of the next 8.

  • I still think we get the one seed in the Midwest. UNC ain’t gonna take the Midwest.

  • @mayjay I’m a glass half full guy and I still think KU is Final 4 bound but that Kentucky team lost to Vandy in the SEC Finals. Not saying you are wrong but ESPN is. Not sure if the UNC star they provided is accurate either.

Doesn’t matter. I agree that the sky isn’t falling. Lots of season left in my mind.

  • I really don’t care that KU lost today. That’s potentially 2 extra games of wear and tear with a 7 man rotation KU doesn’t have to deal with. KU may not end up the overall 1 seed, but I don’t care because KU will still be a 1 seed in the Midwest which means a path through Tulsa and KC which is more important anyway. When you get to the Elite 8 level, it’s generally a top 10 caliber team as an opponent at that point anyway. I’d rather have the 2 extra days to rest up and let the nagging injuries have a chance to recuperate some.

  • @truehawk93 TCU is a good team. They just didn’t close well in a bunch of tight B12 games. If winning one more gets them on the bubble with 20 wins, I hope they win.

  • @mayjay

    Just read this…

    Dave Tuley ESPN Staff Writer

Earlier, TCU beat No. 1 Kansas 85-82 in the Big 12 tournament. The ViewFromVegas is the Horned Frogs did it as 9-point underdogs and as high as +400 on the money line at the Westgate and MGM sports books. ESPN’s Joe Lunardi says Kansas will still be a No. 1 seed. If that’s the case, Handicapper Marc Lawrence passes on a tidbit that five No. 1 seeds lost in the first round of their conference tourneys (2011 Pittsburgh being the most recent) and none made the Final Four. Actually, I think they were ranked #1 at the time that they lost in the their conference tourneys.

But, I don’t get why this is or has to be a black or white or pollyana-ish vs. bitching and moaning dichotomy. On the one hand, as reflected in the fun fact to know and tell, this loss doesn’t have a direct impact on what happens in the tourney. Yes, UK and UNC lost and went on to win it all. And, KU has done well in the tournament in instances where it didn’t when the B12 tourney.

But to say that the game today is wholly irrelevant is perhaps a bit delusional? I don’t think HCBS would agree that it was irrelevant - he was certainly fired up and had a pretty good perspective afterwards. I don’t think Frank thought it was irrelevant. The concern is what it revealed and what it augurs for the Big Dance. What is revealed about a fairly consistent pattern of pattern of performance.

To be clear, we lost to a team that had lost 7 consecutive games to end the regular season. We gave up 85 points to a team that had not scored more than 74 during its losing streak - that had only broken 70 points twice. We allowed easy baskets at the rim and wide-open 3s - as Self noted.

If we’re being honest with ourselves, do we really think that kind of defensive performance is likely to lead to a deep tournament run? And, this game wasn’t a one-off in that regard. It is simply a fact that no team in the past 15 years has won the national title with a Kenpom defensive efficiency rating at low as ours is now (30). Not saying it can be done; it would simply be unprecedented.

At least until today, we demonstrated the ability to tighten up and get stops at the end of games - but to allow way too many easy baskets before then - which allows teams to hang around and runs the real risk of a couple of breaks not going our way resulting in a L.

Don’t get me wrong - I like to watch this team. Frank is a warrior and easy to root for. JJ is a real alpha dog. I like the never say die attitude (excepting Morgantown). I love the fact that HCBS has been willing to depart from rigid adherence to his system to adapt to the talent and personnel he has. Of course, we will root for the Hawks through thick and thin.

At least I don’t mean to belittle or denigrate anyone by making observations about what I see on the court and how it compares and contrasts to other teams and what it might mean for our tournament prospects. IMHO, unless we are, as HCBS said after the game - able to “tighten up a few things” then a deep run would be a hope more than an expectation. Just one persons opinion. But, I will be watching and rooting (and undoubtedly getting a few more gray hairs along the way)…
