  @jaybate 1.0 I agree with much of what you are saying. The whistle was swallowed to let the game clock run out so programming could go on. The game was losing points for several reasons. There is total defensive freedom in college ball. Pros can’t play full out zone. College coaches have been investing more in defense over the past decade or so because they realize defense wins championships. Coaches like Self, who win a ton of games, is noted for defense. Others follow. Look back 20 years in college basketball and you would never hear the term “lock-down defender!” 20 years ago teams didn’t play nearly as good of defense, and the offense wasn’t typically as prolific either. The game has developed, and the development slightly favored defense over the last 10 years. There was plenty of contact in college ball… hand checks… did it reduce the scoring? Maybe a touch. But not to the point where you flip the game on its ear to counter it. Half of these guys playing college ball think they should go on to pro ball. Well… pro ball has plenty of hand checks. It has plenty of everything, including body slams at the rim. The old college game prepared these guys better for what is to come. It was still a much softer game of basketball. Most freshmen playing college ball can adjust. Few of those players are ready to adjust to NBA-style basketball… or Euroball… or anything where they will draw a paycheck. Personally… I never minded a guy giving me a stiff hand check. It gave me several options. I could usually swat his hand check which sometimes slowed him down. Or I could absorb his hand check and use it later to tie up his one hand to prevent him from blocking my shot. Another thing… it helped me know where exactly he was concerning my spacing. Scoring space is sometimes calculated down to only an inch. I was never a prolific scorer. But I was respected at my level of ball and my numbers wouldn’t have been any different if hand checks were not allowed… let me revise that… my numbers would have been higher because I would have shot more FTs and I could nail FTs!

  MAN you guys jump ship easy. We got complacent, went on the road, and got out everythinged. Hard to watch but was incredibly impressed with Wayne’s desire. Also VERY impressed with Wiggins. Think he’s really turned the corner. This is not sarcasm - this is fact. Wiggins could not buy a bucket, no one could, but he kept his head up, kept hustling, and played very solid defense. Other guys were just not tuned in. Na’ must have been blacking out on dirty 6 all night cause he was an absolute no show but other than that it wasn’t because we’re a finesse team or what not. We’re young and went on the road to a loud environment and just got beat. We’ll learn from it. We aren’t soft we just didn’t hit shots, could never get anything going, and the Texas players were playing in front of their first crowd that got over 85 db’s in about 6 years. Think KU football when we pretended we cared. Phog.net is superior. they love me. I’ve found a new home.

  @Crimsonorblue22 I think Marcus can end up an excellent pro… if he can just reel himself in a bit to where he can function within the standards. Man… when that guy is on, he can own a game. Not many players can do that. The NBA rewards alpha dogs.

  @Wishawk The home cooking, refereeing wise is pretty apparent in conference play. ISU got a couple of [pretty bad calls against OSU and Smart had his share of flops. The one in OT near the end of the game was so outrageous that even the announcer were saying that he was “acting” which is a polite way of saying flopping.

  @jaybate 1.0 “Players must be coached in the effective way not to back down;” Right on! “switching wing duties between Selden and Wiggins might help our toughness at the three” Gosh… is there a difference with the 2 and 3 in our current offense? If there is, I do like the idea of a switch. Selden has the body, fortitude and finish ability to be an excellent base line player. He’s shown us already what he can do in that area, and he is unstoppable. Wiggins shot from trey will drop again. He was just starting to get it warmed up before this bad game. I just agree with Self on this one… that he settled too much. He didn’t need to drive it all the way to the rim… but he can so easily create scoring space in mid range. He was just starting to do that in his last several games. I hope he doesn’t flip back now and try to take every drive to the rack. He needs to pick those times… We just can’t win with 3 on 5 on offense. We need the participation of Tharpe and Ellis more. They should be our solid, consistent players and then we only need 1 or 2 of the 3 freshmen to play well to win each game. As it is now, we need all 3 freshmen to play extremely well to win if Tharpe and Ellis play soft, and that is hard because they start playing 3 on 5. The thing is… we don’t need Tharpe and Ellis to score a bunch of points every game. We just need them to play hard every game because if they do, teams won’t be able to play 5 on 3 like they did in Austin. I usually watch games several times before posting these comments, but I erased the Texas game out of shear disgust. I refuse to waste a couple more of my hours watching Jayhawks jogging on the court. I couldn’t believe the jogging…

  @drgnslayr , The art of all disciplines is timeless. Craft and technique, however, evolve and make comparisons problematic, but still sometimes informative. Mahan did a decent job of this for naval strategy and tactics , even though his book was reputedly developed largely as a rationalization for building a two ocean navy for the Harrimans, Morgans, Rockefellers, and Rothschilds. IMHO these sorts of encyclopedic inquiries, if highly promoted, rarely emerge unless there is a big change coming that needs rationalizing. But maybe digital searching enables such unpromoted inquiries today even if not. Sounds like a good read. I will add it to my list, too.

  TX exposed KU weakness - match up problems against long, athletic guys, recall games against Florida, SDSU. Our guys have not figured out how to play against these L&As and look very soft in the process.

  @Crimsonorblue22 Good shoes until you wear a pair of Aldens once. If I recall correctly, you once indicated you were a woman. Not sure if they make them for women, but you might give their site a look. Spendy, but superb and can be reconditioned at the factory a couple of times for the price of ordinary shoes, and so the considerable extra cost gets spread out over the life time of the shoes, which is long. Not for everyone. Pretty conservative styles, but if they have something you like I doubt you would regret them. Being the penny pincher I am, I don’t buy them new. I look for them in thrift stores for $10 and send them in to be reconditioned for $150, or so. I do the same with Mephistos, too. In our disposable society, great shoes don’t have to cost a wise shopper an arm and a leg. I hope other young men and young women read and heed what I am writing here. It took an old wise man telling me, before I got the idea ten years ago. I am passing it on.
