I know it is a fantasy, but wouldn’t it be cool if the Jam Tray did one of the Damn Yankees kinds of things and made a deal with the devil and became a consummate trey baller–the most evil kind of stretch 5 to Bill Self imaginable. What a moral crisis this would create for Self!!! The angel on his right shoulder is saying, “Bill, your personsal project Jamari, has been given the gift of being able to shoot 42% from trey for a season, so you must start him at the 5.” The devil on Bill’s left shoulder, who looks exactly like the devil that Jamari made the deal with at midnight outside the campanile, says, “Bill, you dare not play Jamari for he is a stretch-5 that will shoot trey ball without any ball movement at all. You must bench him and play only players at the 5 that will never take a trey.” Self’s veins bulge. His palms his face like the figure in Edvard Munch’s “The Scream.” It is an existential crisis.   After signing Diallo the big light bulb went off in the sports media world that Kansas is likely to repeat. Too bad. It helps us more to have them question our ability to repeat and let our players think they may be the team to blow the streak. I’m also thinking we lost our 1-year “sleeper status” in March. Back to the bright lights.

  @JayHawkFanToo LOL! Of course adidas is bailing out of the NBA to concentrate on the college and of course it was sucking air on the NBA threads. The other reason adidas pulled out was to put some more pressure on the Nike-Jordan and Nike-Nike fissure. The Nike-Jordan folks will want to jump in on the NBA thread contract, because the Jordan brand is so heavily NBA oriented and could make so much money at home and abroad from doing so. The Nike-Nike division will be wanting to lay off, because Nike appears to be in a mode of trying to plateau Nike-Jordan and grow Nike-Nike to get more control over their business, IMHO. It was a smart move all around by adidas, whether they’re desparate, or sufficiently backed. You have to understand that adidas has apparently just taken the worst that the giant has to dish out in the NBA and college. It has apparently shut the player spigot to a drip to adidas programs in college and apparently stopped the theft at the NBA level since Wiggins, who “totally coincidentally” got side-tracked into the media black hole of chainsaw ice sculptures, Minneapolis St. Paul. And Embiid, who they were probably worrying about more than Wigs, is out in the injury ethers. adidas appears barely able to supply its five lonely big time programs with 3 stacks and Nike appears to be sewing 5-10 stack programs to dominate conferences faster than mushrooms coming up off last years spore around a dead Douglas Fir in a Pacific Northwest coniferous rainforest between Eugene and the coast. The giant has really appeared to flex its North American muscles and god only knows what the giant might be doing in strategically targeted overseas markets in other sports. But adidas has had that money management outfit (name forgotten) that took a very big ownership position quite some time ago now and that outfit among other things reputedly manages untraceable bail out monies, and so as long as that deep pockets investment management firm backs adidas (I haven’t checked for a year or so, so I can’t say if that firm is still invested or not), we should soon see adidas go on the offensive again. Take their best shot, let them reveal their strategy, and then strike back. We will know about how serious adidas is if Self stays at KU and Donovan goes to the NBA. Donovan is Nike-Nike, and if he is washing his hands of Nike-Nike in college, it means that another round of shoewar may be about to break out. If Self jumps to OKC, which seems very unlikely now, it could mean the adidas movement is throwing in the sponge. Fun thing to watch. Glad I haven’t got any money at risk in it. Rock Chalk!

  some of the recruiting experts or basketball should I say said that some of these programs going to be down this year, unlike last year, teams like Kentucky, Ariz, Duke, Wisc makes good for KU. you put our experience Ellis, Seldon, Mason, Graham, and such along with our two new maybe more should be interesting

  @RockkChalkk I don’t think your drinking the Koo-aid at all. Though I’m starting to think Diallo is becoming a reach. No proof but Nike seems to be pulling out all the stops to get these top kids into Nike schools. I will say kind of love Nike turning it’s back on Coach Cal and UK. I had a feeling Slimy Cal and his arrogant ass would cost him in the end. At the end of the day for Nike it’s about selling shoes and apparel, and Coach Cal is bad for business. HCBS has done it before. Getting gems in the rough of what’s left over, and you’re right He’s done pretty good with transfers. Just off the top of my head Young, Whithey, and Black all turned out to be pretty good pickups. Though Black under preformed a bit he was a presence on the court. I’ll never forget when he backed down the opposing team all by himself. LOL That was classic.

  @drgnslayr As you put it, Kansas is “in the sticks.” As far as basketball recruiting is concerned, I agree. And it’s tough to get recruits from the East coast–or even the Eastern time zone–to commit to play “in the sticks.”. We’ve gotten a few blue chippers to play here but it seems it has been a small percentage. Since Roy Williams was from the East, it’s quite possible he realized that his chances to recruit a kid from that area of the country to KU would be minimal, so he focused elsewhere. He’s been lambasted for not recruiting those players, but maybe it’s understandable.

  @KU-Flyer we do need a full roster especially since 3 spots are guaranteed to be open after next year. If we don’t sign anymore players we could have as many as 8 spots open (yikes). 3 left over Scholarships, 3 guaranteed spots open and pending Svi & Selden draft decisions.

  @RedRooster Yes, Bill Russell not only belongs in a conversation about the greatest centers ever to play the game, but also in a conversation about the greatest humans ever to walk the planet. He faced many tough challenges in his life, along with many great victories; in my books, defining the word “winner!” @jaybate-1.0 I’m enjoying your take on all of this. I see the comparison of Kareem and Wilt as about a literal “Yin and Yang” situation as they come… especially when in context of comparing two male parts. Kareem is the Yin… the more passive “female” role. Willing to absorb the aggression of the Yang in order to persevere and conquer through patience and filling in all the space surrounding the aggression. Wilt is the Yang… the more dominant “male” role. Always pushing aggression and utilizing brute strength. He conquered the moment. Yin and Yang is the perfect metaphor for these two because both of their greatness could not be realized and described without the other. We couldn’t define Wilt’s strength as the dominant force over all the great centers without comparing his strength to the weaker Kareem. And we couldn’t define Kareem’s patience and shielded tool (skyhook) as greatness over premiere centers without showing how he could hang tough with Wilt on the floor. I seriously don’t see how one can be defined without the other. Bill Russell offers up something totally different. He can’t exactly be compared apples-to-apples, or oranges-to-oranges, but that does not mean the taste of a pear is any less sweet! By today’s standards, Russell is a power forward, not a true center. But he sure could fool a lot of people, including every player on the floor when he was on it!

  SF is a really critical position in the NBA right now. You’ve got Lebron and Durant leading a nice group of veterans, but also young stars like Kawhi Leonard and Jimmy Butler, as well as Andrew Wiggins, Jabari Parker, Greek Freak, etc. I wouldn’t be surprised if the early part of the draft was very wing heavy. You have to be able to match up with these guys on both ends and there are just so many guys that are really good at that position. Winslow has set himself apart because he is probably the best two way player of that group. However, I think Kelly has a chance to shine in workouts if he shows that he is the next best individual defender (although Stanley Johnson will be a factor there). Whichever player shows up defensively could move into the top 7, with the rest of the SF prospects falling in the late lottery.

  @JayHawkFanToo I know you raise great points. I’m just having a dream here, kind of like my dream to bring John Lucas to Lawrence. Dreams open up a lofty vision for possible direction. I think the idea of having someone capable in Lawrence ready to take this on in private business is an interesting idea that could also benefit KU hugely. It seems like it might do a lot more good than investing so much in luxury apartments.

  @KUinLA Wine is sacred in my family for many reasons. Let’s just say they’re religious! Ha! Totally agree with your points by the way. The reasoning is flawed. We want to blame drugs (which includes alcohol), not the abusers. Yet on an entirely different, yet parallel issue such as guns, we wish to blame the abusers and not the guns. I find it illogical. Interestingly enough, we hail from a state with a fierce and often violent history of progressiveness, perhaps best demonstrated by way of alcohol and the prohibition of it (Carrie A. Nation). Kansas led the way on the moral topics of that era, be it abolition or prohibition.
