  Oh ye of little faith. Our MVP will probably change game to game, although Perry and Frank will rack up the lion’s share. The MVP of our team will be our depth, as two of our rookies are getting invaluable practice minutes, and will get to play in a slew of games that other recruits across the country won’t. So, Bragg and Vick start out the regular season with 1/3 of a season under their belts. Not the same intensity, of course, but more time learning the system is a good thing. Throw in a very deep, experienced team, along with the best big man recruit in the country, and you have a recipe for a title. somebody will take the 3 job, and run with it, and do a great job. Same with the 5. Our depth this year will be light years ahead of last year, and I flat guarantee Jamari will not average 20 minutes a game this year. I think my rose colored glasses are looking at a bouquet of roses.

  The more you think about it, the more this change in the shot clock seems like a huge thing. Especially in KU’s case where we run sets that take time, this is a huge season for Self to re-invent the wheel. West Virginia should be great early at forcing turnovers and enforcing their style of play on the opponent Defensively they could benefit more in the long run if they are able to shorten offensive possession of the other team by 5-7 seconds. I’m sure more teams will zone or press because it gives you the chance to dictate pace if your defense is good. Iowa St seems to benefit the most because they probably have to change the least offensively. They chuck 3’s, take shots when they want and spread the floor. Will the new coach use the same style? Probably will use something similar as he’s known as an offensive coach. Oklahoma with Cousins & Hield who can get their own shot whenever & Woodard who can drive the lane and get fouled every time is likely to benefit as well. I see the rest of the league having to adjust accordingly including KU. Playing at 24 in real live games will really help the transition to a shorter clock. Mason & Graham will have to learn to speed up the pace on every missed & made basket. It’s the greatest practice we will get to the rule change.

  Another difference is that the ball is slightly smaller (1 inch smaller in circumference) which should favor the shooters and ball handlers.

  @Statmachine I’d like to see Perry have the break out year Self has started talking about… and I’d like Frank to be right on his heels for B12 MVP! The key for us having a successful year is for our guys to stay healthy. If that happens we should be in for a real ride!

  @JayHawkFanToo KU in a strange way seems a crucial tile in the Big Shoe mosaic–kind of a wild card to mix metaphors. In retrospect Dean, Roy and Sonny appear possibly pivotal in the beginning to building what kind of appears again in retrospect perhaps the first structure for collective biasing of player distribution apparently involving Big Shoe. Before them it appears coaches and alumni of an individual school worked unilaterally to attract players to single schools. Hypothetically speaking, Dean and Sonny seem to have been possibly the first to engage in bias-ing of talent to TWO schools by apparently working with Roy at KU and dividing up not so much the country, as the recruits geographically. What in retrospect seems a kind of Dean/Sonny/Roy alliance apparently cooperated to some kind of degree for some apparent period to channel eastern talent to Dean and western talent to Roy, if one were to give credence to Roy’s reputed indication that he agreed with Dean to recruit west of the Mississippi. This apparent cooperation, if in fact it were real, in effect appeared to indirectly help limit talent available to other programs. And KU appeared for a time not just Nike KU, but perhaps a proto-Nike-Jordan West. I have some vague recollection of Roy at KU talking about having recruited MJ to UNC and of MJ even visiting KU. At the time, it seemed like nothing more than a former player lending a former coach some of his star power to help him recruit. But it appears somehow different in retrospect if one hypothesizes a possibly broader dynamic involving Dean, Roy, Sonny and MJ. Somewhere along the way Nike’s Jordan line emerged and Sonny and Nike parted ways. And Roy had some recruiting controversy arise reputedly related to Jaron Rush and Myron Piggie. Later Roy left to answer Dean’s call to return to a faltering UNC and Self and KU carried on as Nike KU for a time. Then KU and Self reputedly signed with Adidas. Thus, some interesting figures in the legacy of Big Shoe involvement in college basketball appear to converge and diverge during Roy’s tenure in the KU BASKETBALL legacy. Of course, the above is at most hypothetical speculation based on appearances. From the outside looking in, it seems impossible to say what really happened.

  @sfbahawk Ya know, to be fair, I don’t think I’ll know enough about JRGiddens to be able to assess his true character. So to call him a “thug” is hard for me to do (he may or may not have been during his KU years). My connotation of thug is a person who will try to get away with whatever he wants, regardless if it is illegal or not, and may have violent tendencies. Usually I equate this to criminals/drug dealers, etc. Now there’s plenty of wannabe’s out there who simply want that “street tough” cred, and will sometimes get caught trying to do something to build said “cred”, which usually means they aren’t very good at it. Giddens got busted shoplifting in OKC before he ever got to KU, then there’s the knife/barfight thing… Another example of “wannabe” would be Allen Iverson, with all the painful “gun-toting” bad PR he gave himself trying to represent that same “street tough” cred. What a joke I thought in the 90s, and still think it today. But always a new crop of kids every year trying to “show” they are tough. Bottom line: My observational “guess” is that JRGiddens was a pretender. He had no reason to be a thug, nor was he any good at it, which tells me he wasn’t for real. I think whatever went down at the bar, he got scared with the facts, didn’t tell daddySelf the whole truth, and paid a price. Apparently it took a year of rehab for his leg to fully recover. I felt sad for him. We rooted for him. For a while, he wore our jersey very well.
