    • RE: Coach cal

I made a commitment to stop talking about UK awhile ago. I have tried to stay away from this one but I can’t hold it in any longer.

For the love of everything that is holy, lets stop being the little brother of UK!

It’s like Duke and Kentucky are going at it for dominance and we sit on the sidelines saying “Hey! Look at us too!”

The original post about Cal was alright. We can see his arrogance and poke fun. Great. But why should it reflect KU when UK does well or vise versa?

UK is on a great run and Cal has made the right coaching moves, and we turn it into a pissing contest on how well Self would have done with that talent. Would he have achieved greater? Or would he have underachieved because he is to rigid? WHO CARES! Their success doesn’t take away from ours, and their failures doesn’t add to our season.

KU wins the world games and we reek of jealousy when one of the first comments is about UK. And when UK made it to another final four, we complain of our situation in light of UK.

Remember how little and dumb Missouri sounded when their season magically became better after KU got bounced early in the tournament? Like it added wins to their season total? That is what we are beginning to sound like.

We have all been frustrated every year since 2012. But for heavens sake, we are a blue blood program, the second most winningest program, and are constantly a 1 or 2 seed in the tournament. We should not accept early exists from the tournament, but not because UK has been successful. But because we are Kansas and we don’t need to compare ourselves to anyone.

    • RE: What's Wrong with this Picture?

@Texas-Hawk-10 I disagree with HEM on a number of topics. But where does this come from?

Some posters become emotionally charged with his posts and get personal.

I don’t know HEM personally but I usually read everything he has to say. His statements are usually littered with statistics and none subjective points. How one chooses to interpret and value the statics might be, but not the statistics themselves.

This is usually how a HEM post goes:

-Outlines the problem with Self or a player* -Writes his position on Self or a player* -Gives facts or statistics to back up his opinion* -Then restates his opinion. *Opposing posters replies: -Do you know more than Self? -Traylor is a great leader and brings energy. -You’re always so negative. *HEM replies asking to prove him wrong. *opposing posters -You’re arrogant -You’re stubborn -Self is smarter.

You get the idea. The moment when you have to get personal when talking about facts, you have officially lost and might want to rethink your position. But this is a trend whenever HEM posts. Facts against personal attacks. It’s sad to see.

    • RE: Putting a square peg in a round hole

Disclaimer: Self makes mistakes. I believe he is making some mistakes with this team.

BUT lets not go crazy and think a Final Four or National Championship can’t be accomplished with Self’s High-Low game. We have a tendency to be spoiled and fickle as fans. Before UK started the season, a lot of people laughed at coach Cal when he said he was going to platoon. Then after he had success 3 games into the season, we were calling for Self to do the same thing.

When he wasn’t getting the talent of OADs, we thought Self lost his recruiting touch. But when he got them, we hated the constant turnover and the lack of toughness to our team. And the list goes on and on.

Lets not forget, before Embiid’s injury, we were set to make another final four run. The year before, we GAVE the game away to Michigan (which made it to the national championship). The year before that, we lost in the NC. And the year before that, VCU broke our hearts in the elite eight.

And now here we are. Is Self to blame for some of it? Of course. Is the game passing by Self? Most definitely not. With the right players, Self’s traditional offense is still very effective. Again, this year he has not adapted like he should have. But Self is still the right coach for us.

I have sworn off talking about UK awhile ago, and I have kept true to my promise. Lets keep in mind that we don’t need to be UK. We are freaking Kansas, a true blue blood, and a constant national powerhouse. When we constantly compare us to them, we exude a little-brother syndrome and we are too good for that!

Come of my KU brothers and sisters. Let us not be so fickle and keep in the mind the past 5 years and not get overwhelmed to point of questioning everything Self has accomplished AND will continue to accomplish

    • RE: Super Mario fresh start

@Crimsonorblue22 The way the Heat used him as their whipping boy always infuriated me. If he committed a turnover, you’d either have Bosh yell at him, James death stare, or Wade scream during a timeout. If anyone else did, all they had to do was pat their chest and mouth “my bad”.

I understand treating an over zealous rookie like that. But Chalmers was a 5 year vet getting treated like that. How can anyone be expected to be productive when you’re in that environment?

@KUinLA I think the question that you haven’t answered is where were you after KU blew out Texas, ISU, or any good game this season? If there is a legitimate reason, then sleep well with a clean conscious.

What I believe rubs @icthawkfan316 and others the wrong way is you treat this site like dog who gets beat after a bad day at work. I will assume the best and think that you actually enjoy this site and the Jayhawks and only feel the need to post when you can’t take it anymore. But maybe try and venting all your thoughts and not just the negative one. In the end, you are a KU brother (or sister) and I hope you are enjoying the ride as much as everyone else. • Do we really want Zim?

“I want to take the least amount of risk as possible. It’s my dream to go to the NBA and I want to do whatever it takes to get there,”

Is this someone we want at KU? I know we are a long shot anyway but this seals the deal for me. I know the NBA dream is something every recruit will have, but the personality of taking the least amount of risk can very easily fall into not playing hard to avoid injury, being upset if not getting the PT he wants, or playing in an offense that doesn’t pack his stats.

We will dodge a bullet and have less gray hairs if he doesn’t come.

But KU wins Maui and stutters through a game to get a win and we are doomed. For goodness sake, we were handling the number one team in the nation for 32 minutes!

    • Graham's Injury

New guy here but I have been reading your guys’ insights ever since kubuckets was created.

I am interested to see how players will step up after Graham’s injury. I have been eagerly waiting see Greene and Svi play extended minutes together. Mason driving with Svi on one side or Perry getting doubled to pass back out of Svi on the other. Two 6’7+ shooting wings is something that I haven’t seen in Self’s era.

If those two get hot, expect Utah to let Perry on more one on one and our inside out game becomes more deadly. On top of that, with Mason improving with dishing it after beating his man, the team’s flow could similar to Roy’s teams with the defense minded team of Self. I am being rather optimistic but that is what pregame predictions are all about!

I expect a close game with a lot of runs but KU wins by six because of foul shooting at the end. Rock Chalk.

    • RE: What they did after 5 Conference Games?

I have heard many people talk about Wiggins saving himself when he was in college. But it honestly has to stop.

Did he put up 25 and 8 like he was capable of? No. Did he disappear at times? Yes. That is product of not having the right mentality but not lack of effort. Self has mentioned time and time again that just because a player lacks a motor, doesn’t mean he isn’t trying hard. He has said that thinking to much, and simply not knowing how to play hard all the time. A player thinks he is giving his all until a butt chewing occurs, then they explode (like we have seen in the Big Red Dog this season). I believe players like Ellis always plays his hardest or what he thinks is his hardest.

If a player is going to slack off before the NBA, it wouldn’t be on the offensive side of the ball. He would fill the stat sheet with points, rebounds, and assist but would not play the type of defense needed to save his legs. But when we look at Wiggins, he was the only lock-down defender on KU last year and was arguably the best thing he brought. We would routinely guard their best player and do it very well. Wiggins was not half-a**ing it like so many have proclaimed.

We can pick apart how Wiggins was not the bull-dog he needed to be and didn’t us his superior athleticism to finish above the rim. All those are fair critiques. But to blast our best defender that year on effort doesn’t fit.

@DoubleDD I was in the same position. My son got a 10,000 dollar engineering scholarship and to be honest, KSU was the best option for him to go. But there isn’t a better feeling then seeing your boy on T.V. during a KSU game and him wearing a “Decade of Dominance” shirt. “HCBS’s teams have never had problems beating up a team that plays a full court all out game. Never, well until this year.”

Look at the VCU game and although we were known to beat down MU’s “forty minutes of hell”, there were times to where is gave us fits.

To beat the press, Selden can’t play extended minutes. It’s that simple.

Oh thank goodness I can comment about this kid! I can’t say much but when my boy was 14, he played against Mitchell. He was only ten at the time and tearing everyone up. Dropped 26 and didn’t break a sweat.

Almost exact same player and situation as Reid. Tyrell was 12 and played against my oldest son when he was 15 in summer ball. He did very similar things that Mitchell did but Ried was a lot more quiet and a better shooter at that point. Mitchell was more aggressive and liked to throw his body around.

Of course, everything has changed a lot since then and impossible to tell how he will develope or how his talents translate. But still a cool story!

@SoftballDad2011 I believe @HighEliteMajor made an excellent point when talking about recruiting Diallo with concerns of eligibility. If we stayed away from other, slightly lower recruits in hopes to sign Diallo, then it’s understandable. But Self signed him late after a couple swing and misses. We had scholarships available so it was well worth the risk.

    • RE: Be Honest

This team scares me. It is unusual for me to be scared when talking about the Jayhawks because I am naturally optimistic to a fault when it comes to KU. This leads to a bigger heartbreak when the NCAA tourney rolls around or football in general. But this year, I am just not confident.

The first reason is because this team lacks something to hang their hat on. I realize that they have buckled down on defense numerous times, but without a shot blocker in the middle, I fret that a speedy guard like Texas’ Taylor will break us down without the insurance policy of an Embiid, Withey, or Aldrich. And although Mason is as quick as they come, that doesn’t account for switches on the perimeter. My optimistic side tries to persuade me and says, “Hey, when was the last time we didn’t have a true shot blocker? 2008! We will be fine”. But the sensible shows that 3 absolute defensive studs on the perimeter in Robinson, Chalmers, and Rush. Not to mention the bulldog in Sherron. Again, I really like Mason and his defensive prowess, he just does not have the type of defensive experience the 08 team had.

The second reason, is similar to the first. We do not have a 5. Period. Again, my crimson red and blue goggles come on and I tell myself “Bill self doesn’t need a center. His 4s and 5s are interchangeable. KU can be just as efficient on offense with two 4s”. But this would mean we have another reliable post player outside of Ellis. Again, that is something that we just don’t have this year. Alexander may develop a move to score over bigger defenders. But right now, I personally cannot see that happening this year. He will get his points from dunks and layups.

The final reason is Selden. His jump shot is improved and is a good overall player that I love having. But he is not the explosive scorer that I thought he was. I don’t know if he ever had the one foot explosion in the lane, or if he lost it with knee issues, but it’s not there. His points are coming off of jump shots and wide open drives. He isn’t the play maker that I hoped he would be this season.

But all is not lost on this team. I have to say something good because it is not in my nature to assume doomsday, especially this early in the season. The hawks have something I have not seen at KU yet, the X factors this year will be two long, pure shooters on the wing in Svi and Greene. I am very high on the potential of always having at least one in the game. Since they are shooters, they will go silent some games, but other games, give us wins single handily because one or both got hot. And if, now that’s a big IF, they can play solid defense, having size on the perimeter that can shoot is only something 2 or 3 other teams have in the country.

Despite my negative Nancy comments, I still think KU will win the Big 12. Mark it down. ISU is to reliant on the three, OU has talent but not enough to compete against the big dogs day in and day out, West Virginia doesn’t have the post play, and UT won’t be able to use their size as much because we have already faced Kentucky and have seen it before. On top of that, no one can match the wing play of Selden, Greene, and Svi throughout league play. KU has to many scorers, to much toughness, and to well coached to beat KU in an 18 game season. It will be stressful and close and at times question if KU can pull it out again. But the Jayhawks will either be champions or co champions when it’s all said and done. Rock Chalk!

    • RE: Kentucky Escapes in OT 89-86 over Ole Miss

DISCLAIMER: This is not a bash on anyone on this site!

I am growing weary of talking about UK. Are they the best team in the nation? Yes. Did they beat us like a red head stepchild? Yes. But right now, the Big 12 conference is the only thing that consumes my thoughts. ESPN already does everything it can to shove UK down our throats so why add to it on a KU basketball sight?

When it comes to time for tourney talk, I love looking at match ups in our division and the future of playing UK in the elite eight, final four, championship, etc. But to focus on them throughout the season when it bares no influence on getting number 11 in a row comes across as little dog syndrome (See KSU chant when they F*** KU during a timeout no matter who they are playing). It’s funny to me how MU fans still watch KU games to point out flaws when they are now in a different conference. I refuse to give that treatment to UK. It gives them way to much credit because we are KU, a classic blue blood program in contention year in a year out.

Again, I do not put anyone here in the same breath as MU, My rant is over. Rock Chalk!

@jayhawkfantoo that quote makes me feel better and Self puts the season into perspective. I am personally more worried about the New Mexico State match up than the WSU one. I believe we match up very well with WSU.

Van Vleet hasn’t faced someone who can match his quickness like Mason and Baker hasn’t faced a big wing like Selden. The Harrison twins aren’t physical defenders like Selden is. Maybe put Oubre on him as well to keep fresh legs running through their plays?

This isn’t White who had his dad complain about how many scholarships his son had to play somewhere else.

This wasn’t a guy who anyone on the team complained about his demeanor when he wasn’t playing much.

This is a guy who had his family (and probably himself) make stupid decisions. And he is paying dearly for them. So what if he didn’t live up to the expectations we held him to.

Morningstar, Reed, and Teahan were all good KU players.

Did we win a NC with them? Well nope. But we also didn’t win a NC with Wiggins, Oubre, Henry, Bmac, Selby, Wright, Alexander, JoJo, and the list goes on and on.

The point is that NCAA tourney is simply a chaotic crap shoot that needs luck no matter who you have on the team. There is no special formula to win it all.

At the end of the day, we want talent and we want to win. Morningstar, Reed, and Teahan were crucial when their number was called and Mitchell could be the same. Is he a “must get”, I’m not sure. But we do need guys like him just like we need the Bmacs. Let him sign with KU (hopefully) and let his development speak for itself rather than his vertical.

    • RE: No more softball

The key to post scoring isn’t having two awe inspiring post players. It’s having one post player be an effective threat, and the other being a “good enough” scorer. Ala Robinson and Whithey.

Now I am not saying that Dallio is as great as Jeff was defensively, but there’s no reason Perry can’t put up 17 and 8 a game while Dallio rebounds and feeds off Ellis on the offense.

The real question mark isn’t the post, but the 2 and 3 position. In 2012, Releford was one of the best lockdown defenders and Elijah was a great scoring punch alongside Taylor.

Can Selden provide the scoring punch? Can Svi become the all around stud we hope him to be?

I sure hope so. Until then, I’ll hope for the best and expect another final four run like every year! RCJH my friends!

This is similar to Perry at the end of last year before he got injured. He wasn’t shooting a great percentage but the defense always had to account for him because he was in constant attack mode.

@drgnslayr you can’t take away what kind of player Lebron is because of his size and speed. That’s like taking away Jordan because he was more athletic than everyone else. They both are superior athletes to everyone on the court.

The frustrating part when talking to Jordan lovers is they want to hang championships as a measurement to being the greatest player. But if you bring up Russell, it’s because of the all star team he had. Their equation for championships/pure talent just happens to match up perfectly with who they watched growing up.

If you think championships measure the greatest, than it’s Russell. If it’s pure basketball talent, then you can’t automatically count out Lebron.

I openly admit, I grew watching Jordan and absolutely hated him. If people call Lebron arrogant, they must not remember Jordan’s post game comments and commercials. But personal opinions about the individual shouldn’t matter when discussing performance on the court.

When people ask “Which Lebron are we going to see? Magic or Jordan”? 2 of the top 3 players of all time in many people’s opinion, how can you keep him out of the top five?

@HighEliteMajor Self has been SLOWLY evolving for awhile.

Before the 08 team, he was a staunch believer in set plays. He started opening up his offense to a more free flowing offensive scheme that gave the players many options.

Then came the slow progression of the dreaded “fools gold” era. Slowly, he let his players fire away at open 3s early in the shot clock.

The last part was his two big, traditional high-low game.

In the past, I could see Self yanking Jackson for Svi or Vick extremely early after an ill advised drive or pull up jumper. Now, he lets his talented players play through the learning curve.

I still love the high-low game and hope it comes back when the personnel is right. I think it’s the most consistent way of getting easy buckets when the shots aren’t falling. But for now, I am enjoying watching Mason take over in ways a PG in the past wouldn’t have been allowed to!

"Tolerance is such an overused word.

First off, when is it good to “tolerate” anything? “Okay fine. I’ll tolerate you.” It is actually pretty offensive.

And you can’t preach “tolerance” without tripping over yourself. Let’s say I am being intolerant. If you demand that I be more tolerant, you are being intolerant of my intolerance.

Tolerance is used terribly. What it’s saying is be tolerant of everyone and their views, unless they disagree with you.

I have no problem with Sams kissing his boyfriend on TV or Jenner using her money how she wants. But let’s be consistent here. If everyone has the right to believe what they want, then let Tebow take a knee. If you believe there are right and wrong ways to live your life, that’s fine as well. Argue against Jenner, Sams, Tebow, Duck Dynasty, or whoever. But don’t hide behind the hypocrisy of tolerance while you do it.

Off my soap box! Have a nice day!

    • Is Self getting burned out?

This has been a thought for a couple years now. My love HCBS has not let me honestly assess this idea. But the longer KU plays, the more apparent it becomes.

At the beginning of the '11-'12 season, Self talked about how pumped up he was because of the talent (or lack of talent) he had. He was excited to coach up lesser talent to see how close they could get to their ceiling. As we all remember, that team, in the words of Roy, would “pull the nails out of the floor because they played so hard”. Self’s face would get bright red those years as he was constantly demanding for more. T’s were not uncommon and he would yank a player the minute someone got burned on Defense (with the shallowest team he has ever had).

Fast forward 3 years, and those occasions are few and far between. I have thought he is taking a different approach with different team dynamics (which every good coach does), but we are about to start conference and this team still is not gelling.

I just cannot imagine Self of 3 years ago to let a players make a lazy pass on the wing or take a terrible shot early in the shot clock and not have repercussions. And with the Spurs job soon to open up (because of Pops retirement) or the Thunder head coach position (because Brook’s is on the hot seat), I am worried that we are on borrowed time and Self knows it.

I am not looking for a lynching board for Self, I am just wanting someone to ease my mind and show me how foolish I am being!

I got a fever, and the only perscription is more transition 3s!

We will have to get used to this team and how it goes on spurts. It will make us go grey but will be exciting when they make comebacks. Good game and like always, rock chalk!

    • Predictions: Kansas vs Baylor

If you are the same as me, you have been scheming on how to beat the Bears for the last couple days as if you are Bill himself. I would love your thoughts.

We must not change out new style of play. Play fast and take open 3s early in the shot clock. With Oubre playing without thinking, I am predicting a 18-25 point game. The bears do not have a lock down defensive wing to handle the rising play of Oubre. Also, Self notes how well Greene is playing. If his neck is feeling better, expect a couple of treys and a solid, overall game.

With Gathers, our big guys might get manhandled. I don’t expect must from Perry this game but I will gladly put my foot in my mouth if he gets his numbers! Also, I have always liked the way Chery plays for Baylor. Thankfully, we won’t have Tharpe on him this year and Mason can wear him down

If we can keep Baylor off the offensive glass, and grab a few ourselves, I expect a solid win. I predict we start off sluggish because Baylor is hungry for a conference win. But around the 10 minute mark, KU will get back in a groove and pull ahead by 5 at Half. The second half will have KU controlling the tempo with mini-streaks by both sides. But we will pull away and get a comfortable win.

      KU 72-Baylor 59.

      @JayHawkFanToo

I completely agree when tourney time rolls around. But as for me, I am am more worried about how good OU looks, waiting for UT to fall apart, and hating ISU. But who am I to block the joy of my KU brothers? If scouting UK brings excitement and energizes you for college basketball, then by all means, do so and let me know what you have discovered in early March! .

Geez, I believe @JayHawkFanToo was just describing why the RPI ranked us above UK. He might have thrown in a little Jayhawk bias but there is nothing wrong with that on a KU board. I want to talk about KSU tomorrow rather than UK two months ago, but if you don’t think KU would put up a fight if they played them again, then I feel sorry with your outlook on this season. Even if we were playing the undefeated 1973 UCLA Bruins, I would think we had a good shot if we pull Walton away from the basketball, doubled him in the post, and roughed up Wilkes. There is nothing wrong with @JayHawkFanToo and his outlook!

    • Bold Predictions?

This will be a close game. KU jumps ahead by 8 or 10 early in the first half but ISU will make a run. I see us controlling the game for 30 minutes but there will be a 10 stretch to where we labor and let ISU make a run.

No way ISU beats us the same way they did in last game with transition. To beat us, they will have to hit at least 13 treys and Niang will have to have a stellar game with his driving to the bucket, kicking out, and usual flopping. Ellis will have his way with the new isolation package Self has installed but don’t expect many looks for Greene. They will be in his grill all night and since their game plan is to get shooters open, they will know how to neutralize ours.

KU simply is slightly better in almost every aspect. KU wins 81-73 because of late free throws made by Greene and Mason. Rock Chalk my friends! Let me hear some of your bold predictions on how the game will play out!

@RedRooster I am one of those fans who must budget out at least one game. I make sure that the whole family can go, so it gets quite pricey. The cheapest seats, if you get them early enough for a conference game (depending on which game) ranges from 60-150 bucks. I was able to get tickets to the Oklahoma State game for 65 dollars a piece. And when you buy 7 tickets, gas (I live in Iowa), and concessions, we are easily looking at over 500 dollars for the night. But it is well worth being apart of the atmosphere!

    • RE: ITS THE END OF THE WORLD

@KUinLA I agree that as KU fans, sometimes we get a little caught up (more than most fan bases) on winning the league. Other than our unprecedented dominance as of late, league success isn’t recognized on a national level. We get bragging rights for another year against our conference, and a better tourney seeding. But that is about it.

But I am buying what @JayHawkFanToo is selling. It shows that we have been relevant year in and year out. And that we show consistent excellence. When you win the league, you are always a threat for the Final 4 and we have seen that over the past decade. The early exits is another monster that would have to be discussed on another board, but you catch my drift.

Even though I agree with most people about Lucas not having the same skill package, and being a couple inches shorter, the argument against Lucas is that he is a red-shirt sophomore and has been in the program for 3 years. But didn’t Withey transfer? He had to red-shirt a year also. Wouldn’t that make them in the same position?

I am not getting excited about Graham’s shooting. It is the epitome of “fools gold”. It was his drives and his passes that got me giddy. He said he was playing “soft” and the next game he fixed. That is refreshing to see a player back up is comments.

    • RE: Late Season Dissection

Time to stop letting Mason get a free pass. He took so many ill advised shots. With 20 seconds left, we ran the chop play, Greene was open for a second, Mason didn’t give him the ball, and chucks up a three. He isn’t playing lock down defense anymore, isn’t finishing at the rim, and isn’t hitting shots. The ball is sticking when it’s in his hands as well.

We thought of PG woes were over this season. But now we realize that isn’t the case. When Mason, Selden, and Traylor are your leaders, you can’t win big games.

I hate just give negative an analysis without solutions to solve it, but for life of me, I can’t figure out to get our of corner we painted ourselves in with Mason and Selden. And before anyone says anything, it isn’t just “shoot more 3s” because the problems are deeper than that.

It’s a problem that says this group can’t get up for a game against a rival, who beat us last year, when the league is on the line. It’s problem that lets us get pushed around almost every single game.

Graham has no problem getting in Fosters when and getting a T when we are up by 10 and at home but turns sloppy when the chips are down. That is a microcosm of the overall status of this team.

Do we play Svi and have Ellis shoot 25 times a game? I don’t know. Anyone to give some helpful insight on how to fix the glaring problems?
