I think he is spot-on too, but where would they all go? Answer, for most of them nowhere. The biggest complaint that I have, no geographic proximity at all.

The premise was that “if the right opportunity arose”, not that it necessarily would arise for any or all of the teams currently in the Big XII. What I was saying is that for the teams presently in the conference (not including OUT of course) the Big XII is not seen as a 'destination" conference where they might LIKE to be. If any BigXII school received an offer from the B1G, SEC, ACC or probably even the PAC, not that any such offer may be forthcoming to any of the schools, I believe that the school(s) would accept in a 'New York minute.". As you indicate, until an offer is received the schools are here by necessity, not by choice.

@nwhawkfan I really don’t understand the notion that adding a school gives you a market. Houston…the Texans, Astros, Rockets, Dynamo, etc. not to mention UT, A&M, or even TT…and that leaves UH where 15% (that is not a typo) of the student body lives on campus…it’s a commuter school!! How much does that really “add” ? Pretty much the same for UCF. Just too many other “entertainment” options in their markets to make those schools much of the presence, That’s not to say the Big XII had much choice but to add schools (I hope BYU doesn’t become a mini-Texas in “demands”), and those are probably the “best” available ones. But to ascribe significant market penetration to these schools (maybe BYU In SLC is the exception) merely on the size of the market is foolhardy and at best is putting lipstick on a pig, in my opinion.

Also, Strong Hall feels VERY good they’ll land in either the B1G or ACC. If I were a betting man, I’d put a couple bucks on the ACC. But scenarios definitely exist for both depending on TV deals.

Well, I’ll kind of expand on FarmerJayhawk’s hunch. I think it’s “two-fold” attack…first, to go on a “fishing expedition” to see if they might turn up something useful to their suit, as well as (and probably more likely I think) to attempt to “embarrass” the athletic department by trying to find any possible “dirt” in/on the department to the point that the department determines that any continued embarrassment (whether it’s actually related to the suit or not) is not worth continuing to fight the suit. I understand that both of these tactics are relatively common in"big money" lawsuits.

Other than OU & UT, I don’t think any school out of the B12 has a “guaranteed” home. As of right now, I think KU will PROBABLY come out OK…and surprisingly probably to the SEC, despite our football!! UT & KU both have pretty long records with ESPN so I’m thinking that ESPN doesn’t want to lose either if it can help it. So, unless there is some kind of “deal” between Fox & ESPN “exchanging” some teams, I think ESPN would try to keep both. As the conferences ESPN is “all in” on are the ACC & SEC (as well as the AAC), think only the SEC makes sense geographically and compatibility wise (though admittedly the “culture” of the SEC may be a little “odd” for KU). (Do remember that we may be beginning to “adjust” to that culture given our AD’s and football coach’s lineages.). Other than OU, UT and PROBABLY KU and TT, think the rest of the conference will be “as is” and simply expand mostly out of the AAC to get to 12 or 14 (or even possibly “merge” with it). It could well become a “tweener” conference in the pecking order with the Power Conferences (B1G, SEC), then “Secondary Conferences” (ACC & PAC12 , possibly with the BigEast considered for basketball only), then the B12, then a “reformed” AAC , followed by all the other conferences in some order. However, there are still several years until “realignment hell” is upon us so things could well change (for the better, or for the worse) in that time frame! Buckle up…it could be a wild ride!!

Well, if the Kansas legislature is faced of having ONE school in a “power” conference as opposed to NO schools in a “power” conference, they might change their minds (if legislators actually have minds). I’m not sure how they would pass a “law” that requires KU & KSU to be in the same conference but I supposed at least some KSU alum in the legislature might try it. As to your comment re the B1G, I certainly hope you are correct, though I think what you are hearing is more wishful thinking than economic reality. If the B1G doesn’t get OU or UT, I just don’t see them expanding at all. Why would they? I don’t think the SEC would expand either unless they get OU and/or UT. Unfortunately KU just doesn’t add enough economic value on its own to increase the per school distribution in either conference. So why expand? In fact I think it would would probably DEcrease the payout per member with KU alone, not what most schools in a conference would desire. I think our best hope is to be a “tag along” with either OU or UT to either the B1G or SEC (I doubt we can be “picky”) in which case the “average” value of the pair would still be an increased payout. If the SEC gets both OU & UT, our only hope would probably be that UT “insists” on TT ( I don’t think OU can “insist” on OSU) and KU tags along as the 4th to keep the numbers “even”. I would guess by the 2030s the distributions will be so high in the B1G and SEC that few schools (MAYBE Notre Dame, Florida State and possibly Clemson) would bring enough value to merit inclusion in either of them. The only “exception” I would make would be IF somehow, we can cut out or significantly reduce the amount the NCAA takes from “March Madness”. That would make a basketball school MUCH more valuable instead of just relying on football for much of the value of a school, at least as far as media payouts are concerned.

@kjayhawks I HOPE we have a way out as well…with the B1G or SEC. Doubt anyone other than OU and UT have a “guaranteed” way out, if either or both “want” to leave—and with the money involved that is a GREAT possibility. I can’t imagine the B1G picking up either KSU (academics, as well as a duplicate if they picked up KU) or ISU (duplicate in a relatively small state), and I don’t think either would be “worth” the $70M-$80M share distribution of the conference. I’m not sure we have that value “alone” either, but would “average” that amount with either OU or UT, or both as a "tag-along school. Think we have a decent chance at B1G IF they expand (if they lose both UT & OU not sure they would expand at all) and even the SEC (kinda keeps the B1G from expansion without the ACC (because of the ACC GOR) and PAC12 (possibly too far away except for Colorado, which probably prefers the PAC for all of their CA alums). The SEC (for better or worse) would realign us with MIzzou and make KU-UK games a yearly affair. The SEC is already strong in football so it could use some more BB talent, not to mention another AAU school. I just don’t see KSU, ISU or anyone other than possibly TT having a home (and that only if UT “insists”) other than in a “reformed” B12 which would probably no longer be a “power” conference if both OU & UT left , and maybe not even if only one of those two left.

A new SEC Football Contract will be over 20M per school, per year! CBS bowed out of the bidding on the new SEC “Saturday Game Day” football contract when the bidding went to OVER $300,000,000 per year beginning in 2024 (or earlier if bought out). Looks like ESPN/ABC is in the final stages of a contract. Remember, this is ONLY for the “Saturday Game Day” and SEC Championship games (just the CBS stuff). Other sports on the SEC Network/Bowl Games/ Basketball Games, etc. are in addition to this figure! (I have been told on another board that using the figures above, the total media payout per SEC school would be $62M per school per year). How will this affect KU football as I would doubt the Big XII could approach a number near that…and would it be enough to encourage OU and/or UT to bolt to the SEC?

Second that!! Just a minor thought…can we get back to a font similar to the one on the old board? Something like Ariel might be a good replacement for New Times Roman if available for the board. But in any case, keep of the good work…I know I appreciate it…and I think everyone who uses this Board does as well!

Also remember that these are “commits”…with a small “c”. With the churn in commits that seems to occur in any program, especially ones like ours in at best "rebuilding mode (remember we have already had one “100% committed” de-commit) you need to have some “overage” in “commits” (still a small “c”) just because when signing day rolls around you don’t want any spaces to go unfilled and you know some “commits” (again with a small “c”) won’t COMMIT (with a capital “C”) when signing on the line time comes. It’s still some time between now and national signing day.

Saw this article where Fox is “passing” on the B12 Championship Game in 2019. Not a good sign when media right comes up again. Maybe the B12 will have to take a CUT in the value. If so, would that destabilize the league? (Hint: Think so!)

What has really surprised me is that in virtually every list of “possible coaches” I’ve seen, Leavitt is NOT on the list! I had kinda understood that he was a shoo-in to replace Snyder. I don’t think he’s even been “interviewed” in Manhattan by the AD like several others have been. Guess the guy from NDSU who seemed to be the front runner for a while was not offered, at least not yet. Does sound like there is a “tug of war” going on in Manhattan between someone(s). Thought they would have decided by now…but the longer they wait I think the better for us!

I’d be among the very last to ever defend the Z person (don’t even want to type his name anymore) but to be fair there was no ESPN+ or other OTT network from ESPN at the time…it was all cable based. That doesn’t excuse the deal Z made…it was lousy, but there were only cable options at that time…no OTT.

@Crimsonorblue22 Agree with you wholeheartedly about that contract…though it seems to have been an “oversight” by the Athletic Corporation Board of Directors…who obviously in hindsight placed too much trust in Zenger who showed, at best, bad judgment, compounded by the Board abdicating its responsibility (as provided in its By-Laws). Setting general policy IS the job of the Athletic Board…carrying out that policy responsibly is the job of the AD. Just like a Board of Directors in a corporation, the AD being the President of the corporation. The Board sets general parameters but the “nitty-gritty” of carrying out those policies (the details like hiring/firing personnel) are left to the discretion of the President. But, the President still remains ultimately responsible to the Board and if they so choose, the Board may terminate him if they do not believe he is responsibly carrying out their policies. Because it was Zenger’s responsibility (coaches, contracts, administration) he was terminated, and properly so, even if regrettably later rather than sooner (in my opinion)…

@Crimsonorblue22 then why hire an AD?..and who makes the “ultimate decision” then, the “committee”/“guider”? (and who chooses the “committee” and who is on the “committee”). Then who is responsible if it doesn’t “work out”…are we going to fire the members of the “committee” and keep the AD since it wasn’t “his” hire, it was the committees? Realistically though, most ADs have at least an informal committee for input, but that is the ADs choice, not someone telling him what he can and can not do. If you “hamstring” your AD, that seems to say you don’t have confidence in your AD to make a good decision so you should not have hired that person as AD in the first place.

Yes, the “responsibility” falls on the AD…he is in charge of the athletic department…BUT, most AD’s seek some kind of counsel on the hire (though not “required” to do so) be it forming a committee, hiring a consultant(s), getting recommendations from the “leaving” coach (assuming he was successful, such as Self) and maybe even “running” his choice by certain people (Chancellor, BMDs, etc.) before an announcement. So, ultimately the AD does the hire, but being a little like a politician…“consulting” with people and trying to get as big a “buy-in” from them as he can on his final choice (something I don’t think Zenger did).

Whether he was a “good” or " bad" hire is now somewhat academic…he has been hired. I think the best thing to do now is to support him as much as we can and hope things work out (no results are ever “guaranteed”). The time for "what if"s is over. Not quite as pessimistic as you are about the B12. Figure that there is a >50% chance the B12 will survive. I’m thinking that neither UT nor OU will want to leave IF a new TV deal is within a couple of million of what they would receive elsewhere. Both have attractive T3s that could make their total take close to or possibly even above what they could get elsewhere without going through the hassle of “moving” (new “rivals”, longer travel, more different time zone to deal with, etc.). But, IF the TV contract is not that good, I do agree that if either “leaves”, even if the B12 survives as a conference name, it will be a P4.5 at best. If both left, then G5 (or AAC) it is for most of the survivors. In that case, the fate of KU is certainly up in the air, in my opinion.

Unless the PAC12 picked up a group of CST schools, it would make KState the “West Virginia of the PAC12”. However, the PAC12 does not seem to be in expansion mode. I would doubt KState’s “share” of the Kansas City market would be financially attractive to the PAC12, which already seems to have financial problems since their league network doesn’t seem to be working well for them. I would also doubt KState’s academics are very exciting to the PAC12 which has even more AAU schools than the present Big12! I think KU may have problems if the Big12 “explodes”…but KState, ISU and probably Baylor (with everything coming out of there) are in even worse shape than KU (maybe add TCU & TTU, and even OSU to that list if “Big Brothers” don’t save “little brothers”). Only UT & OU are “assured” of a safe landing, IMHO (and they are the only schools which could “blow up” the Big12)!!

@Woodrow I agree, IF true (always take it with a couple of grains of salt unless “verified”, which it usually isn’t). Would think most ADs would like to move from a G6 to a P5 school. But, if he didn’t think he was ready for the job or “up” to the job, maybe it’s a good thing he “passed.”

@justanotherfan Under that scenario, we MIGHT end up in the MWC but not sure it’s because we are tied to KSU. Remember in the chaos of 2011 KU, NU, OU, MU and A&M approached the B1G about membership. There was NO KSU, no OSU, etc. Only “big” brothers, not “little” brothers. And, IF (and I do think that “if” is far from certain unless we get out athletic house in order) the B1G came calling, I don’t think for one moment the BOR decides that KU would have to “pass” which would result in having NO Kansas school in a P4 conference.

Would that be a bowl game?? Maybe the “Toilet Bowl”? The Las Vegas odds makers rate them “even” AT THE BOTTOM of all the P5 teams…but with THREE wins each. Looks like that might be a bet…but which side??
