You know Self is happy about this one. Yeah, there’s stuff he will wish would’ve gone better, but with your star PG with the flu, the refs calling more phantom calls, Tech playing out of their minds, and the fans going crazy, this is a fantastic win for KU.
Other Big XII teams lose these games. Not the Jayhawks. They win. And they win championships.
Does anyone know if Jamari is okay? He took a beating for us. Played his heart out and took some hard falls. Stats won’t show, but I think he played the game of his life last night and might have played longer if he could’ve. He’s a senior, he lives and breathes KU basketball, and he’s come a LONG way. Extremely proud of him today and hope he’s okay.
I remember thinking way back in the day that there was no way Frank Mason would be better than Tharpe. What a dumbass I was!
Good for him and his program. Would be more interesting to have his wife on though.

In what other sport can you foul a team to your own advantage? In football, penalties are optional. You can accept or decline.
You should be able to accept or decline free throws, at least in the last 2 minutes. If you decline, you get the ball out of bounds with a 10 second runoff.
Simple solution. Fouling at the end of games to your own advantage is unwatchable. It can’t be good for basketball.
Change the rule and the game gets better. Winning teams win and losing teams lose.

Two things:
We don’t lose big games in conference. Especially at home. When was the last time we lost to a ranked team at home when the conference title was on the line? Was Okie State ranked when Smart did the backflip?
As @jaybate-1.0 mentioned earlier, we played like we played against Tech because we had WV coming. We played like we did against WV earlier because we had Kentucky coming. We played like we did against Iowa State because we had KState coming.
Coach preps the kids for the big games at the expense of performing well in the small games. More often than not it works out well for the small games. Even more often than that (it seems), it works out well for the big games.
We’ll be fine. We’ll probably beat Baylor too. It’s the others we should be concerned about.
Let’s hope Coleby turns into the 2008 Aldrich. At which point I’ll surely call him…COLEBY ALDRICH!

KU ain’t playing great but these refs are missing all kinds of calls. How is it a tie up when one guy is out of bounds? And novas guy was CLEARLY inside the cylinder.
Some of the refs are ridiculous, but I’d say the bigger issue is the attitude of the players and coaches towards the refs. Showing respect to officials is not the virtue it once was.
Good question! I wonder if Bill will step up about it. He was basically clotheslined on the last play of regulation. I would think MAYBE it was because it was so close to the end of the game and “refs aren’t gonna call that”, but then they call the over-the-back on Landen right after that!
I don’t know if it’s just because he’s small and tough, but he’s certainly not getting the benefit of the doubt.
My guess is he got tripped up in practice. No idea who would’ve tripped him though…
The drawing a charge thing pisses me off. Guys aren’t even playing basketball, they’re just trying to take advantage of the rulebook. The rules are for the game, not the game for the rules.

How can a ref possibly call something he doesn’t see? Even more, something that doesn’t exist?!
Any reason why the refs don’t err on the side of NOT calling the foul? “You don’t see it, you don’t call it”? Seriously, wouldn’t that make more sense? Nothing worse than watching refs trying to take over a game. Nothing better than watching a game when the refs are “letting them play”, right?
Yep, 5:54 mark of 2nd half. He tried so hard to recover from what was CLEARLY a jab at Landen.
I think someone mentioned above, I can’t ever remember seeing LL flop. In fact, I’d say there are times where he SHOULD’VE flopped to sell a foul that was there but never called. He gets bulldozed all the time and the refs never call it.

Every year there’s been hope with Self and the Jayhawks. After losses like these, I’m always looking forward to the next year, recruiting classes, imagining the starting lineups and how they might be better that the current year’s.
But this year, I’m out of hope.
I know, I’m spoiled. We were in the Final Four five years ago. Oregon hasn’t been since dinosaurs roamed the earth. Good for them.

No shame in losing to Kentucky in '12. But yeah, I think KU has gone from being mildly disappointing in the tournament to flat out disappointing. Maybe we’re over-seeded? I’m starting to think we often are. The Big XII is obviously weak year after year come tourney time, so there’s that. Not sure why they do so well before conference play starts.
Anyway, why should I think next year will be any different? Is this just who we are, the low end of the blue bloods?
Throw away the streaks. I want national titles. And I’m not confident that we’ll get close any time soon. At least to the standard that I think a program like Kansas should be held to.

I loved how Devonte bumped into Svi after that careless turnover. He was pissed at Svi. He wanted this game. Svi took it like a champ too. Then on the bench you could tell Devonte was trying to build him up again.
I see a future coach in Devonte! Hmm… I’m trying to think of a charismatic coach with a great smile who tears kids down then builds them up…
How many timeouts did we have? Could he have switched Mitch and Dok on offense and defense?
I gotta say, I love the modern style of ball.
Imagine, in theory: If you have 5 guys that can shoot or drive, the other team is screwed. Just hang all your guys out beyond 3 point range and set screens, dribble-weave, whatever. If the defense sags, drain a 3 on them. If they guard the 3, drive past them. It’s beautiful. Chicks dig the long ball, and chicks dig the layups/dunks.
Dok-ball is more of a necessary evil than it is a beauty to watch. You watch it and like it because it works (except against 'Nova). But it ain’t pretty. No one likes to see a guy back his man down (still don’t know why that’s legal) and throw up some ugly hook. Olajuwon is about the only guy I can think of in recent history who has made the inside game beautiful, mostly due to his footwork and fakes.
Otherwise, it’s ugly. It just is.

I’m kinda the same on this. I’m surprised this stuff doesn’t happen more often. The kids screwed up, that’s what kids do, that’s what adults do. Not justifying it at all, they need to pay the price. But it’s much more of a story if we talk about how ridiculous it is. But I don’t think it’s that ridiculous. Putting myself in these kids’ shoes, I can’t sit here and say I would’ve done anything differently. Doesn’t make it right, but it’s not ridiculous to me. Mike Tyson biting an ear or Artest going into the stands. That fits the bill for ridiculous.
I hate to say this, but will Baylor’s stranglehold on 1st in the conference actually help us in the long run? Are we conditioning ourselves to take every game seriously?
What I’ve been most impressed with him is his ability to guard 10-15 feet out, move his feet, react quicker to jump for blocked shots, and therefore avoid fouling.
