I thought it was just me. Honestly I lost a lot of interest when Mahomes started playing for the Chiefs. I only have so much sports attention to go around.

RE: Myron Medcalf Disrespecting Kansas Basketball
And under his reasoning for 2019 Duke, no mention of whatever year we had Wiggins and Embiid?
And I just realized he had the Memphis team we beat much higher too. Seems like not just a Dookie but a Dumb Dookie to boot.
-
Myron Medcalf Disrespecting Kansas Basketball
He ranked the top 25 teams from first to worst.
-
Issue #1: He gives Duke’s '99 team–who lost in the championship–the #4 spot? Led by Elton Brand? You gotta have more star power to be the 4th best in 25 years if you don’t even win the natty.
-
Issue #2: He has Baylor’s title team as better than any team KU has had over the past 25 years? I highly doubt that.
-
Issue #3: KU’s '08 title team–the only team to win with a final four group of all #1s–IS #13 ON THE LIST?! Blasphemy. Seriously, though, it’s just dumb. We had so many studs on that team: Chalmers, Rush, Russell Robinson, Darrell Arthur, Darnell Jackson, and Sherron Freaking Collins, Sasha Kaun, and Cole Aldrich off the bench. Medcalf probably thinks Lebron is the GOAT too.
-
Issue #4: Per issue #1, you don’t have to win a natty to be on the list. Then why isn’t our '20 team, arguably the most dominant team KU has had over the past 25 years, 2nd to last on this list?
-
Issue #5: Our last title team was the worst on this list over the past 25 years? I’m sorry, after this trash list, the burden of proof is on Medcalf or anyone else to prove why this team should be this low. I won’t explain myself on this one.

RE: 2023 Recruiting
@justanotherfan yep, that change of pace. I suppose if he can be sudden enough to create space for his shot then he’ll be fine.
That change of pace is why Frank Mason was so good at getting to the basket. He wasn’t just blazing through the paint, he changed it up, kept people off balance, was prepared with floaters, etc. I love that kind of play.
-
RE: 2023 Recruiting
For your viewing pleasure. One of the best highlight tapes I’ve seen in a while. Shows off his court awareness, ability to change pace, make quick decisions, and finish at and away from the rim.

I still can’t help but think Drew’s winning last year helped motivate Self even more this year…

RE: NCAA loses more power... again...
@Texas-Hawk-10 said in NCAA loses more power... again...:
@chriz said in NCAA loses more power... again...: To answer your questions:
-
No, none of KU’s issues involved NIL stuff.
-
No, very few people will make enough from NIL deals to want to stay in school longer. If someone is good to turn pro early, that’s going to be more money than staying in school.
-
Someone will end up as the poster child of how not to balance academic/athletic/NIL responsibilities
-
Most NIL based deals will be relatively small and from local businesses. The NIL deal will have minimal impact on KU’s recruiting unless the athletic department totally botches how they handle and promote NIL opportunities to kids.
I would think there’s a strong enough relationship between NIL and KU’s case that it may have some impact? E.g. If NIL existed then perhaps KU wouldn’t have done this or that (allegedly)?
Also for the marginal kids, the ones who may or may not make money by declaring, perhaps NIL would give them the incentive they needed to return?

RE: NCAA loses more power... again...
-
Sorry if I missed it earlier, but will this ruling have any impact on the NCAA vs. KU case?
-
Also, you’d think this would make players stay longer, right? So a good thing for college basketball?
-
At least, so long as they are still motivated to play hard despite having already received income.
-
We are KU and that should still help get recruits. But perhaps not as much anymore since they can get paid (more easily) to go anywhere, particularly the larger markets, right?
-
-
Does Baylor's title make Self hungrier?
This seems like the elephant in the room, maybe someone’s already mentioned it and I missed it. We all know Self isn’t a huge fan of Drew. Self has to be ticked about last year’s tourney cancellation, and embarrassed by this year’s performance, relatively speaking at least. Not saying he should, but I’m guessing he is. He’s a competitor.
So assuming that the answer to my subject question is “yes”, how does that translate in recruiting, coaching, etc.? And if the answer is “no”, why not? He’s already hungry? We just haven’t seen it due to the dark recruiting cloud over our program?
I just think seeing Scott Drew up there has to have him hacked off and I’m curious to see how he responds. I get it, he’s a big boy, he’s competitive already, doesn’t need something like this to drive him harder. But I tend to think it still does.

RE: Is Silvio finito?
My thing is I never feel safe with the NCAA, especially when they’re still determining the NOA penalties. You gotta think they could still keep this 2019-2020 season in mind with DeSousa playing. Heck, they originally cleared him and then reneged on that later. Who’s to say they wouldn’t do it again?
Especially since, as mentioned above, he’s not contributing much and it could be argued that we’re better without him (unless Dok or McCormack get injured).
So do we risk it?
-
RE: Is Silvio finito?
Would the NCAA vacate regular season wins but allow tourney wins?
-
Is Silvio finito?
Will Silvio get any minutes in the tournament? Does Self risk vacating wins if he plays him?
Or is his not playing him a potential admission of guilt?

It’s Marcus Garrett time. Give him the effin ball and get out da way.

Interesting story I guess, but an MU grad is the only one who would care enough to write it.

RE: Fixing College Basketball
Yeah, I see intentional fouling as more of a loophole than a part of the game. Of course I see the “improve your free-throw shooting” angle. And yes, it CAN make the game more exciting at the end. And yes, we most likely wouldn’t have had the title in '08 if we couldn’t foul. Although I remember it working against us as well (e.g. against Michigan several years ago in the Sweet 16).
At the end of the day, rules aren’t meant to encourage fouling. Especially when it’s meant to stop the clock and trade 2s for 3s. So the loophole needs to be closed.
-
RE: Dok Dok Dok Dok Dok
What I’ve been most impressed with him is his ability to guard 10-15 feet out, move his feet, react quicker to jump for blocked shots, and therefore avoid fouling.
-
RE: Fixing College Basketball
@dylans What do you think he’s done differently besides having Marcus Garrett? (Not saying he hasn’t done anything, just curious your thoughts.)
I noticed Baylor last night was doing what I wish KU would’ve done against Iowa State. They basically just didn’t allow the 3-point shot or the dunk but weren’t AS concerned about anything in between.
-
RE: Fixing College Basketball
I may be in the minority here, but I’d like to see the refs keep bigs from backing down their defender. Again, to me, it comes down to basketball. Think Hakeem with the dream shake vs. Shaq with the bulldozer. It’s just more beautiful to watch when players have to rely on their skill vs. their weight.
-
RE: Fixing College Basketball
We want more basketball. Fouling, by definition, is not basketball. Penalties are meant to discourage fouls.
-
RE: Fixing College Basketball
I’m also not crazy about being able to pound a ball off an opponent when you’re falling out of bounds. Again, taking advantage of a rule, but not a basketball play. Requires smarts, for sure. But it’s not basketball. It’s dodge ball. Although I can live with that rule. It’s the others that are more aggravating to watch.
-
RE: Fixing College Basketball
ALSO, free throws should be optional, at least in the last few minutes. Free throws were meant to reward the victim, not the perp. You can accept or decline in football, why not in basketball? And when people are clearly committing a foul to stop the clock, shouldn’t that be discouraged as well, at least in the last few minutes? Right now the last few minutes are so often unwatchable. Sure, occasionally it makes it more exciting, but usually not.

Defensive three seconds and remove the ability for secondary defenders to draw charges.
I love this. I can’t stand players drawing charges by getting in a spot at the last millisecond without even making a basketball move. You do that in a pick-up game they won’t let you play again. Bush league.
Defensive 3 seconds. Love it. Allow guards to drive more. The more space, the better. Before MJ put on muscle he was at his acrobatic peak. It was beautiful. Then the Pistons beat him up with what Jaybate used to call…I forget…Duke’s play…extreme basketball? Something along those lines? At any rate, MJ had to get stronger to play a more physical game, but his most impressive highlights came earlier in his career.

@chriz Week nine ratings - #3 KU, #6 BU, #16 WVU, #22 Tech
I guess it’s a combination of us being better and most of the rest of the league being worse. Looks like we only have 3 in the top 25 now since Tech has been bounced. Just wondering if it’s in part of the league beating up on itself too.
-

Anyone know how many Big 12 teams were in the top 25 before conference play?

RE: Better from behind?
@kjayhawks said in Better from behind?:
It will be interesting to see if Self starts Moss or Braun. I think Moss will continue to start going forward because he had more experience and seems better on the defensive end. But we need a Braun to aggressive like he was tonight from here on out.
I’ve noticed Moss starting to go the rim more often too. Maybe he’s feeling the heat from Braun? I assume Self is asking the same from both of them?

RE: Better from behind?
@approxinfinity said in Better from behind?:
I think you’re probably right. Maybe playing from behind is allowing us to loosen up a little on 3 pointers. Our offense looks much improved the last few games.
I actually figured it would cause Self to tighten up a bit on the 3, no? At least unless it was completely out of reach?
-
Better from behind?
I hate to say this, but will Baylor’s stranglehold on 1st in the conference actually help us in the long run? Are we conditioning ourselves to take every game seriously?
