Can Bryce Thompson shoot?
-
With Doke gone, our perimeter scoring will need to pick up the slack. Our 3 ball has got to be much better next year than it was last. I’m hoping Bryce Thompson can help out with that. If anyone happens to know or have any theories about how good a shooter he is please share!

Bryce has good shooting ability, couple that with Braun, Garrett (shot the 3 better than Dotson at 33% this past year) and Ochai all improving that aspect. We will be a much better shooting team. We will enjoy Dave making FTs and jumpers. We will greatly miss Doke being able to get buckets at will.

Bryce is really good, have high hopes!

Yes.

@kjayhawks I can’t find his HS stats from last season, but in AAU last summer, he only shot 31% from 3. It’s not a huge sample, but I’m sure the competition was much better than HS so probably a better comparison to what he might do at KU. That data says he’s probably not going to be lighting it up from deep on a regular basis.

Very good Shooter. No worries there. Will be 1st/2nd best on the team

Are you basing this solely on videos, belief, or is there empirical evidence that backs up your position? His AAU numbers from last summer suggest Bryce isn’t good from deep yet.

I’m certainly not going to let AAU numbers from 2 years ago form my opinion either

Yeah, I feel pretty good about it. “ Thompson is one of the better perimeter scorers in the 2020 class. He averaged 24.4 points and shot 45.8 percent from 3-point range for the Oklahoma Run PWP grassroots program on the UA Association circuit last spring and summer.
“Thompson is one of the most improved players in the senior class,” ESPN national recruiting director Paul Biancardi said. “He has a tremendous knack in scoring the ball. His ability to make open shots and contested shots is impressive. His passing skills are better than most know about. He’s a high-end, go-to recruit for Kansas.””

I hope Tyon can shoot as well. I tried to look up his JUCO stats but couldn’t find them. Do any of you guys know what his offensive strengths are?

Sub 70% from the FT line is concerning to me about how good a shooter he really is. How many guards has Self had shoot sub 70% from the FT line, but we’re still good 3 point shooters?

He’s a 38% career 3 point shooter in high school on over 500 attempts and we don’t have any data from his senior year (remember, he really lit it up last summer) so I feel pretty good about him being a good shooter. He was also dealing with knee issues before last year.
I’m just seeing on every single site he’s one of the best shooters in the class and I don’t have any reason to doubt their evals. Wayne Selden was career 38% from 3 and 60something from the line, so he’s an example.

I’d compare him to a poor man’s Josh Jackson. He’s not a terrific shooter (stats: https://indianhills.prestosports.com/sports/mbkb/2019-20/bios/grant-foster_tyon_nqkj) but is a very good athlete and defender. He’s very long (7’ wingspan) so he should be able to defend multiple positions. He’s a solid rebounder, but not an adept passer. Needs to play more in the team concept. To me he’s the highest ceiling guy we could plug in at the 4 spot. I think he’s a future pro.

Bryce finishes as the 18th ranked prospect. Awesome job Bryce. We signed a stud.
Meyer’s comments about his shooting are fitting.
