Garrett's triple-single

I was a bit surprised to read Coach Self’s brag on Garrett’s performance at the center of the zone. While watching the game, I thought he was too hesitant to shoot it to be totally effective against the zone.

The OSU bigs were backing off of him, and he was still looking to pass rather than take the 10 footer. If I’m not mistaken, I remember him only taking one shot from the center of the zone, which I also think he made.

Marcus needs to shoot that shot more often to be most effective. I thought Kevin Young, Josh Jackson, and Julian Wright were all better than Marcus at playing that zone position. If Garrett can add the shot aspect, he can pass them up.

Am I forgetting any other good zone distributors from past Jayhawks?

  • Good point to bring up. Garrett has 9 assists and 8 rebounds. My guess is that caught Self’s eye most of all. Ideally you’d want the guy to be able to hit that shot so the folks won’t back off – but better yet, to cause the defenders to suck in so he could kick out or drop it low to Doke easier.

  • @HighEliteMajor The guy does so many things well…the only thing he doesn’t do that well is shoot from the outside. You can see that it does hurt us in that the defense doesn’t have to respect his shot. Positives far out weigh that one flaw. But agree it would be nice.

  • His shot has taken a decent step forward this year as well. a 5 pp increase in 3 pt % (a 17% increase), an 8 pp increase in FT% (14% increase), and a 3 pp increase in 2 pt %. It’s really nice that he’s not a total liability at the line if he gets fouled, because he is a really solid driver.

  • @FarmerJayhawk all that w/bad ankles!

Certainly the Axl Rose of the 19-20 Jayhawks

  • @FarmerJayhawk we certainly needed these days off.

  • @FarmerJayhawk @Hawk8086 Garrett has made good strides. You can see defenses’ lack of respect many times, a few games it’s been really blatant. But Garrett as an offensive threat is better than last season. I think Garrett’s value increases at a greater rate than the actual increase in his shooting percentages if that makes sense … meaning that as he gets better shooting, the entire package becomes even more meaningful. The drag of his shooting created a somewhat impractical negative to have on the court in certain games. That’s changed. Great to see.

  • Despite teams not respecting his shot he’s averaging 5 assists a game since January. His playmaking ability has taken a leap. He knows his strengths around the basket. I think if he can continue to make FT’s at a decent rate that’s more important because he is deadly at getting in the lane (drawing fouls)

  • I personally think Garrett will find his way on to an NBA roster. He’s so good at everything else besides shooting he will find a spot. He’s basically who Shuan Livingston was for those Warriors championship teams.

  • @Kcmatt7

I think so as well. He’s going to be the PG next season and will have a full season of film teams can look at from that position. He’s probably already giving them a good idea right now even playing Dotson’s sidekick. We know he’ll defend at a high level wherever he goes and has great size to guard 1/2 spots.

I think it’s kind of funny , when we watch these games and the guys , I anyways always hear them talk about how teams need to realize how much Garrett and even Dotson love driving to the left ? - isn’t that right ? - - or is it to the right ? - Hell can’t remember which way -BUT they say how they love to drive that way.

What makes it funny to me is , that like Fran says or others say how they love to drive this way , so you would think If people like Fran and etc see this , you would other Coach’s and players from other teams would realize this too. Fran say how they have to be able to stop them driving that way, YET Marcus and Devon just continue to drive the ball that direction time after time after time after time. - - I love it.

It’s almost like well you know what I do - - - now STOP IT - -and they can’t or don’t lol. - Must drive opposing Coach’s nuts lol - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY-

Agree 100%. He is a guy that can lock down on the perimeter, pass the ball, rebound, and is extremely unselfish. I think he absolutely gets a shot at a NBA roster. There aren’t very many guys that don’t really care about themselves and scoring in the NBA.
