  • @Marco doubt we go after any, roster is stuffed at that spot.

    could still use another big

  • @jayballer73 I believe that will happen. Much more of a need than a wing.

  • @BShark Which could be why Brown went to Baylor. It’s not like we are not loaded there, how many we got?

I’d keep an eye on Logan Landers.

  • @BShark

    Yikes!

  • The Brown situation is awful no matter what way you look at it. How many times did he come here unofficially? Then commit within the conference to Baylor. Good grief kid.

Recruiting seems not great atm, fortunate to land Clemence. Need to just get the NCAA crap done with. Doesn’t seem like we have a shot at any elite 5s, but at least we will have SR Dave hopefully.

  • Jordan Riley will end up at ST Johns would be my guess.

Hard to land top talent when there aren’t a lot of immediate minutes available, especially when none of the underclassmen are surefire early departure candidates.

A 2021-22 starting 5 of Harris, Thompson, Agbaji, TGF/Clemence, and Dave seems like a solid bet.

If Self and staff feel like Gethro can contribute in 2021, then the front court is the lowest priority. At this point, all attention should be on the back court for 2021 because that’s where KU looks like they’re going to be hurting the most right now in 2021 without much depth, particularly at the 2 spot.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 I am thinking a wing will have to fill in at guard. I believe the staff would like to add two guards. Sallis and Hickman in a perfect world but I don’t think Sallis ends up at KU. Hickman and Bates would be fine.

Very fortunate to have landed Clemence. Recruiting is still a giant pile of poo I guess. I’m hopeful for Hickman but I won’t hold my breathe either after this latest letdown

I’ll be happy with Hickman and a quality big to go with Clemence. If everyone stays that should you have a nice nucleus of players but overall I think the talent level will have taken a dive if guys don’t develop and that’s where guys like Kendall Brown bridge the gap. That’s an elite athlete going to Drew with a good base of skill level. I’ll say this one hurts a lot more then others have over the years

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 I think Muscadin can and will contribute, even this season. He is big and has handles, can shoot from deep and drive. I am really not understanding why everyone thinks that he’s not going to contribute. I heard the same about Agbaji and Braun, and what happened? Muscadin is going to not only play as a freshman, but play pretty well.

    @BeddieKU23 thoughts?

I think 1 stays in. Butler is the better player and better NBA prospect so I’d lean he goes. Drew also positioned himself to replace him by recruiting a sit-out transfer and 4 star prospect. Not to mention he has Mitchell who played 3rd fiddle last year. I think Teague stays since he’d have a starring role especially if Butler stays in. If they both stay Baylor is the clear cut favorite in the league (I hate to say it…)

Transfer route maybe. I don’t see KU on the radar for an immediate impact big currently. Things can always change on that front but it’s not looking great atm. I think Clemence plays early and as long as Dave returns for his Sr year you have 2 bigs at least. That’s where a guy like Landers could be useful to have

Gethro needs to add a lot of weight first. 6-10, 215 is skinny to hold position on defense. He would get owned on that end of the floor and forced off his spot with ease on offense.

Agbaji isn’t that good. He’s one of the most athletic players Self has ever had, but he can’t shoot, can’t dribble, a subpar passer, and has a very low basketball IQ. There’s a reason why Agbaji was ranked as low as he was. PER measures a player’s offensive efficiency and 15 is considered average. Agbaji had a 13.1 PER last season and dropped to a 10.4 in conference games. I cannot emphasize enough just how bad a 10.4 PER is.

Christian Braun is going to be a sniper for KU. Over half his shots (55%) came from 3 last year and I expect that percentage will go up every year and end up being a better version of Brady Morningstar for Self.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 I never said that Agbaji could shoot, but he’s been a starter for two years now.

  • @Marco said in 2021 Recruiting:

@Texas-Hawk-10 I never said that Agbaji could shoot, but he’s been a starter for two years now.

Doesn’t mean he should be though. He’s a solid defender, but that’s about his only positive attribute on the floor which is why Self plays him. That said, Agbaji’s defense isn’t good enough to negate how bad he is on the floor unlike Garrett who, even as a worse shooter than Agbaji, is a much better offensive player than Agbaji because Garrett can dribble, pass, and drive to the basket and be a force on offense. Agbaji only plays the minutes he does because Self doesn’t have a better option at this point. I will also say that I think Agbaji’s defense only seems as good as it does because he’s spent a lot of his time on the floor at the 4 spot so he’s mostly guarded slower players.

I’m gonna call it now and say that after Agbaji leaves KU, he’s gonna be debated about in the same category as Jamari Traylor who actually had a better career PER than Agbaji does now and was actuallyuch better PER in Big 12 games.

With the plethora of 4’s KU has next year, I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see Agbaji have a big reduction in minutes this upcoming season. I’ll say it now that KU’s best line up next season is going to be Garrett, Thompson, Braun, Lightfoot, McCormack.

  • Agbaji is a more or less a replacement level player at KU, maybe slightly below even but he has traits that Self values a bit too highly at times.

I agree with some of this but I can’t even envision KU’s best line-up next year involving Mitch Lightfoot. If we are going to bring up stats with Agbaji, which I think is fair then you have to look at Mitch’s stats too. Career negative OBPM, average PER (factoring in he mostly played as a big, it’s more or less on par with Agbaji because PER favors bigs) etc… I will believe he is a real threat from three when he takes and makes a real number per game. Where he does well is defensively, which is where I think next year has a lot of potential in general.

So I think Agbaji should see a minutes reduction, but I don’t think Mitch should be playing more than 15 in any given game. If Mitch does prove to be a much improved player then he should and will get big minutes.

I have heard that Self is absolutely enamored with TGF, fwiw. @FarmerJayhawk Have you heard similar?

Yeah, I’d say that’s right. I could easily see Garrett, Thompson, Ochai, TGF, McCormack as the starting lineup by the end of the year. He’s got some Josh Jackson to him. Braun could play the 2 or 3 and Harris the point.

  • Is Micwaber etienne an option still? I know we offered and he’s a top 50ish center? That year we will have a jr braun, wilson, Enruna, ochai. Maybe Thomson or tgf if they return. A very good McCormick. Clemence will be an impact freshman. So I think we will be fine! Key is we need a good point guard. Hickman is key. You land him the class still has 2 top 50 players both addressing our need a power forward and a top pg. With 2022 hopefully adding top 50 level shooting guard talent in Grady dick. It’s annoying Baylor stole a recruit we should always get, but the league needs to be strong. That helps us prepare for a championship run, and gives us more credit when we win it. Baylor’s biggest advantage next year is that we may not have fans in the stadium next year, which takes away our home court advantage

Self has gotten enamoured with plenty players before that didn’t live up to his own hype. I’ve always been very skeptical of JuCo’s because it’s very common for JuCo player’s to get overhyped and then come in and struggle. Rewatching TGF’s JuCo tape, he’s got some significant holes in his game that have me doubting how effective he’ll be right away.

@FarmerJayhawk sorry, but Ochai really should not be starting or playing crunch time minutes for KU because he is a net negative for KU in end game scenarios and is someone that you can leave unguarded on offense with minimal risk of getting burned.

I absolutely think he’ll have an adjustment period. In TGF’s case it’s not just Self either. NBA guys are really high on him as well.

He did make some boneheaded plays down the stretch last year, but also got put in some bad spots (Dotson wasn’t a great passer and sometimes got tunnel vision). I expect his feel and basketball IQ to improve this year. He’s still newish to the game and should make some progress. But could also see Braun in that role, especially if he keeps shooting 40+% from 3. Bill still loves Ochai’s defense, and will play a lot. You may disagree, which is fine, but that’s the way Self will play it.

He was probably never a real option due to his aau team.

22 if KU is out from the NCAA shadow could be a strong class. Lots of good local talent. There are also some kids that want to be Jayhawks but it will be interesting to see if KU makes a push such as Juju Ramirez and Braden Appelhans.

Agbaji made stupid plays consistently all year long. There’s little evidence his basketball IQ will improve because his situational awareness is garbage. Agbaji’s defense is not good enough to compensate for just how bad he is on offense. Christian Braun is already a better all around player than Agbaji and should get all of Agbaji’s minutes this year while Agbaji plays 15-20 mpg.

NBA guys loving players doesn’t mean much to me honestly because they still focus a lot more on potential instead of production. Those same scouts after 2019 were projecting Agbaji to be a 1st round pick this upcoming 2020 draft at the time because of his tools. TGF has good tools, but there’s just been too many JuCo players over the years, not specifically KU, that have been hyped to the moon as instant impact and potential NBA players that never amount to anything more than a role player at their school. Coaches and scouts always drool over players with the tools TGF and Agbaji have, but I’m to the point that players that get hyped by coaches like that have to prove it to me.

This is why I like Lightfoot so much. No, he’s never going to be a guy to game plan around, but he’s a guy that will go out and steal a couple of possessions a he, make good decisions with the basketball, get other players open with his screens and play sound, fundamental defense.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 Tyon in place of Lightfoot.

  • Pay attention to KJ Adams who is announcing on the 31st.

  • @BShark Interesting. 24-7 listed him as 100% KU. They were a bit foggy as to his position though, as far as size and position? Is he a 3 or 4 or both? Any idea on his skill set.

saw that - # 73 off 247 - -think he might or should be a little higher then that - -would be a nice pick up

  • this kind of caught me of guard , when I saw the headline my 1st reaction was must be Hickman - -then seen it was KJ - thing is another frontline player that makes him and Clemmons right " - -we kind of loaded there aren’t we ? - I would think we could use more help in the Back court however IF we land Hickman that will help -let’s do this - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • Looks like Rivals is predicting Adams to KU also. - - - -KU 75 % - -Texas Tech 25 %

  • Here’s what I pulled from Rivals, “ No matter how you try to defend Adams, he is a hard object to move. When Adams gets the opportunity to get settled on the block and take on anyone when he has the ball in his hands, it usually results in points. Also, Adams gets out into the running lanes in transition, and he attacks hard and runs hard to get all the momentum possible on his way to the basket. Whether it’s rebounding or scoring, everything he does at the rim is with force. Adams shows an in-your-face overall game and don’t allow him to get the ball from a shooting stance because he will size up the basket and sink the mid-range jumper. His range does extend out to the arc, but you want him where he can get to ball off a missed shot.

With his bulk, athleticism, and strength, Adams has versatility to his game and he is a tough match-up at the high school level.”

  • Seen where w got 2 more CB’S off 247 for KJ - - makes 4 CB’S for the day. - -Checked rivals again it was 75 % to 25 % for Tech - -now KU at 80 % - -but Tech at 31 % - - - umm what ? lol

KU has all the recent expert picks on Rivals. Texas Tech has no expert picks, but a lot of “fan” picks which I think are open to any account with a paid membership. Admittedly, their system can be a bit confusing.
