Top Bill Self Replacement Candidates
-
Will Wade could be FBI trouble, I’d say Beard is my #1 if Self is fired or leaves amid the scandal.
-
@HighEliteMajor Ok, let’s pretend Beard is a lock to UT for a bazillion dollars (which I would bet is actually what ends up happening, personally). Now who do you have? Still no to Bennett if Beard is off the table?
-
I would be surprised if Beard doesn’t end up at Texas. Shaka is a wounded duck and I can’t see him lasting much longer. They are building a new fancy arena and you have to think they are going to want to generate some buzz.
-
If Shaka can sneak into the tournament, He is prob given time til the arena is built. Which I’m not sure has even been started yet.

Even if that is the case Beard is from Texas. So he is comfortable at Texas Tech. I just don’t see him jumping at some other job because it is perceived to be better.
-
@Woodrow If Beard was given the chance to come to Kansas before he is offered the UT, I’d bet a fair amount of money he’d take it. Obviously I hope Self works out and the NCAA doesn’t take away all of our streaks but I’m a 100% for firing Self if anything is vacated.

Sean Miller and Will Wade have been notified they will be subpoenaed by the FBI: https://sports.yahoo.com/sources-arizonas-sean-miller-lsus-will-wade-notified-will-subpoenaed-federal-hoops-corruption-trial-180149786.html
That’s why I had the caveat of if he survives. He could end up in Bosnia coaching Billy.

@BShark I think Wade might not be on the list for a few years… Just look at his 2019 class. If Bill makes it 3 more years though, I think Wade is a candidate again. You just have to see what happens with him once the dust settles.
I do agree with basically doing whatever it takes to hire one of those 3 though. However, if you couldn’t:
- Steve Wojciechowski
- Buzz Williams
- Nate Oats
Emergency Short-Term hires:
- Turgeon
- Hopkins
- Musselman
I wouldn’t go anywhere near Turg.

Sounds like Zona is going to get nuked back to the Stone Age by the NCAA. I expect a feeding frenzy when Miller gets canned.
that this happens and KU doesn’t join them.

@BShark …I’m with you on Bennett for the most part…but man Beard is awfully good…might put him at the top of the list…but I don’t see that happening (intra-conference). @Kcmatt7 …Agree on Oats. Buffalo is good and plays really tough defense. Haven’t been crazy about the other primary candidates…although Wojo certainly is on the upswing.
Yeah I am not sure he could come here either when apparently the word is he wants the UT job which could be opening very soon. I think he’d be foolish to go to UCLA.
-
@Kcmatt7 Correct. Bennett is a hard no for me. But that’s just my opinion. Hard no on Turgeon ( @BShark ) as well.
@Woodrow So, you would not see Beard moving from a school with zero hoops history, from the western plains of Texas, in a football state, to arguably one of the top 4 jobs in the country, a true blue blood, with built in recruiting advantages, FF opportunities even in off years, at a school that lives and breathes CBB? I dare say you might revisit that thought … or am I loopy?
-
@HighEliteMajor My thought is that the Texas job is going to open before the KU job and I think if Beard was at Texas he would not be a lock to come too KU.
Everything that I have read about him is that he is a Texas guy and loves the state / wants to coach in the state. Obviously a school like KU calls you listen.
There are so many variables here. If Self is fired because of the FBI crap then that is going to tarnish the job a little IMO.
It is going to take a special person to want to follow Self. I mean just look at this board right now when we are 20-7 and going to be a 3-5 seed in the tournament.
-
@HighEliteMajor Bennett is winning at Virginia. You noted this already, but it’s pretty remarkable. They aren’t Rutgers but they aren’t far off of that either.
He is currently 243 - 88 over 10 years. In their previous two ten year stretches before that 167 - 137 and 181 - 132 across 4 coaches. It really took until his 5th year to get it rolling, which I don’t think would be an issue at KU. I think he’s a really good and realistic hire that will end up in the hall of fame and especially if he spends a big chunk of time in Lawrence.
-
@BShark In your original post were you talking about hypothetically next year if Self is fired or just in general when Self is done @ KU??
That changes the conversation drastically.

Good question.
Feel free to discuss both I’d say. Wade can’t remotely be considered if it’s after this season.

I legitimately think he would rather take the UT job. I know being in the same position I would take the UT job if I were him.

Tony might be a very good Coach - -but it is just really really hard for me to try and stomach his style of play - can’t get past the years of where he just had another one of those team that play at slower then a Snell’s pace - -he IS after all the only #1 to lose to a 16 in NCAA history. - It’s not that though - I again just do not like the style of offense it’s boring as hell. - -
I don’t think we have anything to worry about on this anyways for the next 5 yrs at least minimum - he isn’t going anywhere - till at least and then that’s IF he does then - -, true this year has been rough - -very Rough for him , and I know cause I’ve heard from interviews from other Coach’s that the recruiting aspects is a bitch for these guys - - This has been talked about before and I’ll say again I’m not really worried to much about the NBA for Bill yet having said that I truly believe the ONLY NBA job that he could/ - -possibly would go to would be the Spurs replacing POPS.
I know at one point Bill had some Connections with the upper office I think isn’t it Alvin Gentry that works in the office for the Spurs - -I think with the Connections there - that would be the only interest for him - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

I’m right there with you on Bennet. - It would have to be a Hard No , for the same reason - -His style of ball puts me to sleep
-
Would there be any possibility of the thought about Chris Mack - -seems pretty decent or not?
-
Or how about this - -what about the guy - - -dam drawing a blank - -old age - the Asst that let Duke - - ummm Capel is that it? – Jeff Capel ? - right - -seems like a REALLY GOOD recruiter - -any thoughts about him? - only thing could be not enough Coaching Experience - as far as him coming from Duke - - I could care less - -hell of a recruiter looks like - I know the Duke fans hated to see him leave. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
@jayballer73 Capel would leave us on probation.
-
I don’t like this topic

Trying to be realistic so I won’t bother having the HC of the Boston Celtics on this list.
This is in order.
Tony Bennett
Will Wade (if he survives the FBI thing)
Chris Beard
I mostly think the list doesn’t matter too much after Bennett. I’d throw more money at him until he said yes.
Whoever we get won’t be as good as Bill. How about we get an assistant that can coach defense like we used to play? There has to be another Joe Dooley like defensive guru assistant somewhere.

Chris beard and Brett Ballard ast, groom him.

This was just discussed recently.

Bump @Marco
-
I think Chris Beard, Tony Bennett and Jay Wright are some of the guys I’d want but it would be impossible to repeat Self’s regular season record. I think all 3 guys could do as good in the dance.
-
@kjayhawks nope. F>CK the NCAA
-
I’d take Beard over Bennett, but who’s quibbling.

call me crazy it’s ok - -but I am just not on the Bennet bandwagon – boring ball but it’s all good.
Myself I probably could either take the Coach from Louisville that came in - -Coach Mack ? right - -I think he would be fine - -or the Coach from Florida- - -White ?
