WOW. A one and done (or less) that didn’t make the big time. This is a huge shocker.

Feel free to rattle off the NBA allstars that were 4 year players.
-
This is just my guess of NBA allstar starters this season:
Steph Curry - 3 years at Davidson
James Harden - 2 years at Arizona State
LeBron James - Didn’t play college but if he had it would have only been for 1 year
Kevin Durant - 1 year at Texas
Anthony Davis - 1 year at Kentucky
Kyrie Irving - 1 year at Duke
Kawhi Leonard - 2 years at San Diego St.
Blake Griffin - 2 years at Oklahoma
Giannis Antetokounmpo - Played Greek pro basketball and got drafted by Milwaukee at age 18. So basically a one-year player.
Joel Embiid - 1 year at Kansas
I don’t think Preston’s NBA career would have been helped much by playing 4 years at Kansas.

@BShark That’s fine to say, but the list of OAD’s who barely made a ripple in the league is a vast wasteland of unfulfilled potential. Just look at our list of KU players who have wasted the opportunity of a dreamlike 4 years being the BMOC, fans, prestige, and a college degree at the end (hopefully).
-
@wissox - not to mention alumni connections for help, jobs, etc.

This is a fantasy perpetuated by the NCAA. I find it hard to say they wasted an opportunity when they went pro in their field and started making money. That is the goal of college after all.

@KirkIsMyHinrich Clint Capela was 20, basically trained to be a professional in Switzerland since age 15.
Jimmy Butler was a 4 year college player I think at Marquette.
Ben Simmons didn’t play a full year at LSU.
-
Butler was a 3 year guy.
-
@approxinfinity I watched Ben Simmons up close and personal play a full year at LSU. They didn’t make the dance and opted not to accept an NIT invite if that’s what you’re referring to.
-
@wissox ah yeah that’s it. Thanks for the clarification.
-
Simmons was VERY uninterested in playing college ball.

I think he was also equally uninterested in attending class as well

@BShark If you love one and done’s - more power to you. I do not. I don’t need to justify my opinion.

Sure and I’ll keep calling out banal and inane takes when I see them. As someone who predicts KU to lose frequently, I’m an expert on bad takes.
My main point is that staying wouldn’t have done Preston a lick of good to stay. It would have just slowed down his payday and capped his potential pro basketball earnings.
-
I strongly disagree. One or two years at KU would have done wonders for Preston. He basically went from playing HS games against mostly poor competition to playing against grown men in the NBA and the transition was a failure. Playing college would have prepared him not only physically for the rigors of top competition but more importantly, mentally. He has the basic tools to play at the higher level but at this time he is just not ready for it and will have to do some time in the G-League or more likely China.
I bet his mom is wishing she could have placed her greed on hold for a couple of years now that the big payoff just evaporated.
-
Players either develop or they don’t. College is no better a development tool than various lesser pro leagues or riding the pine in the NBA. In fact, I would say it is worse because of the very limited practice times.
-
@BShark What is not being spoken in this discussion is the marketing of players at KU. There is a definite TV payoff for playing at KU where people know you, recognize you, and follow you. Now, simply playing here does not mean you’ll automatically be drafted, but getting publicity never hurts. If Billy had been a double digit scorer on a Final four team, he might’ve gotten more looks.
-
@BShark Playing in college is less valuable than riding the pines in the Pros?
Hmmmmmm.
I suppose if you’re talking about valuable in terms of dollars.
Otherwise, not so much.

Exactly what I was thinking. The NBA drafts on potiental. Preston wasn’t able to display his upside so he slipped well out of the first round. With a little productive play at KU (or Duke or Kentucky) and he likely would’ve gotten a guaranteed contract.
