2020 Recruiting

2020 looks like it will be a battle for top talent. At this point I don’t think KU has any advantage with anyone. It may be interesting to see if KU can get Jr’s to take visits with that rule change.

Julian Strawther and Bryce Thompson. Ty Berry assuming they get around to offering him which I really hope they do.

  • Zach Harvey reclassified for 2020, leaving the option open for 2019, maybe trying to put more distance from his legal issues? KU still appears to be the leader.

  • @JayHawkFanToo

KU isn’t involved in his recruitment

  • @BShark

Forgot about Strawther, definitely a possibility as it stands.

Thompson, not sure he’s a take atm. But his connection with Self definitely could change that

  • @BeddieKU23 Yeah, a lot depends on how many scholarships will be available. 19 is looking like a big class without any oad guards/wings. Dotson, Moore, Garrett, KJ, Agbaji and Braun could all theoretically still be around and that would be a salty really experienced group at that point (JR, RS SR, SR, 6th year SR, JR, SO). That doesn’t even factor in McBride if he ends up in Lawrence.

  • @BeddieKU23

I understand his legal issues had a bearing on his recruitment for 2019; however, people have short memories, with another year gone and if he shots up in the rankings, KU is back in play.

Correct. Things change though and another year of development and distancing the legal case could get KU back into the picture.

  • I would take Strawther in a heartbeat over Harvey. Situations aside Strawther is just better.

It’s not even a little bit close.

Strawther is criminally under-ranked. Would have thought that would have been corrected after he went toe to toe with Jalen Green this summer

  • He’s a top 10 type talent. Effortless scorer and gets after it on the glass too.

  • 2020 class has crazy perimeter talent and depth

Total package at the wing. 6’7, already has a good frame. Good athleticism, great shooter especially off catch and shoot. Can handle the ball. Definitely a top 10 talent

  • Good bigs in 20 are going to be hard to come by if this class keeps trending the way it is. Really important KU doesn’t miss in 19 here

  • The way things are moving, by 2020 the top players might be headed to the NBA and the battle will be for the lower ranked players.

Yep. Part of why I wouldn’t hate Mitch taking a RS. He could be much more valuable as a 5th year SR. Put him with JR McCormack, SO JRE and some Lawsons and that’s prettttty okay.

Not for this year their not. - -I agree though for sure , it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if they don’t reopen his recruitment at all. - This allows this legal thing to be over with - -put things behind and that’s EVEN if they do anything still seems pretty minor typical teenage kid making a mistake. - -Let him do his whatever for the mistake and then move on. - - -I fully expect them to recruit Zach again

Exactly, from my understanding – yes he was wrong - - - and he will have to suffer whatever if found guilty. I don’t think there will be any Major come from it - -could be some probation - -not long though and like you say 2020 rolls and round and I think you can take it to the bank KU will be right there with Zach - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @jayballer73

Even if his legal issues were non-existent I don’t think KU would have taken him. Could be wrong here though

ehhh I don’t know , I guess it just depends how things were to play out , he is as good as Braun - -quicker then Braun - maybe not the shooter of Braun I couldn’t swear on it one way or another. – ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @jayballer73

I’m just going off my gut here. It seemed things were trending away with Harvey before his legal issues became known to the public. I’m not convinced he developed to the point KU was going to keep interest. Again just my own personal opinion here.

With the amount of talent in the 2020 class especially at the perimeter positions I would be surprised if Harvey was in the cards.

  • @BeddieKU23 I think you’re probably right. Not like his door is being beaten down by blue bloods. He is a good program guy for someone. But maybe just not quite our level.

  • @Kcmatt7

Pretty much sums it up. Some of it is timing as well. I always thought KU kept track of Harvey because of JRE. Harvey will play D-1, maybe even a P5 school when its said and done.

  • I imagine that a lot of the bigger programs lost interest because in the current environment any allegation of sexual misconduct is the kiss of death. He is now ranked #29 by Rivals for 2020 and between that and 40 in the other rankings except ESPN. He is doing a prep year in California and if he gets to the top 20 there will be interest by elite programs.

  • Dante and all of Sunrise will be in for late night.

  • @JayHawkFanToo I think it was more than an allegation, was on their phones. Evidence!

  • @Crimsonorblue22

I was referring to allegations in general that now are enough to cause programs to back off from prospects even if they prove later not to be true. In this particular case we know he pleaded guilty to a lesser offense.

  • I’m surprised that the Staff isn’t pushing for Junior official visit’s with the new rule changes in place.

Duke is hosting 3 elite Junior’s over the next two weeks. Jeremy Roach, Jalen Johnson & BJ Boston.

Seems like a leg up already on the competition

  • @BeddieKU23 what is the new rule? Do they get to take another one their senior year?

  • Kcmatt7 said:

Juniors can take official visits and still take five more as Seniors. I believe the total is now 15 overall.

Duke for example has 3 Junior five star recruits coming in this month. At least two of them are considered Duke leans at this time.

Honestly, feels like a missed opportunity with the new rules. There’s plenty of prospects interested in KU, I hope we see if any want to take an early visit

  • @BeddieKU23 Then yea, you’re right. We need to start bringing in as many guys as we can then. I’m sure you’ll see some. Seems like Self may be trying to lock down these early guys first. Then he can probably focus on Hurt and 2020 guys.

  • I mean we have Zeke, JRE and Stanley all deciding by the end of November. So I’m glad he is making them the priority.

I would say that getting a bunch of Juniors in for a game like Nova would be dope. Bring in like 5 together. Definitely make it all about the hype and atmosphere this visit. And then basketball the next one.

I agree the current class is more important and you run the risk of planning too far ahead without knowing what you can sell.

Duke is a bit different from even KU in how they recruit/build their roster. Just pointing out that an elite school such as KU can definitely get younger kids on officials. Definitely could have been the case for Bryce Thompson who’s got ties to the program and visited for Late Night.

  • In a recent article on Rivals Greg Brown said KU is among the 5 schools watching his games the most along with UK, Texas, A&M and UCLA.

Did UVs to UT and A&M. Not taking recruiting too seriously yet. Focusing on improving as a player. Doesn’t plan to do any JR OVs.

I really hope KU is in this one. Along with Cade Cunningham and Julian Strawther this kid is one of my absolute favorite players in the loaded 2020 class.

If recent history continues with Baker in the 19 class Brown is basically Shaka’s right?

I know Brown has had interest in KU for a while but we seem to lose these battles to the home town school.

Would be a great addition next year, POGO STICKS central
