Still no word on QB race

  • Beaty said last week that this pat Saturdays scrimmage would help determine who will be the starter this season, maybe even take the race down to 2 guys. This is one of things I’ve disliked about Beaty, his inability to not only make decisions but to basically keep everything hush hush to prevent anyone form knowing. Here’s the deal, I’m willing to bet that it makes no difference to Nichols State or any other team on our schedule this season who is QB. By the time we get to conference season there will be plenty of tape on whom is starting and what we are doing. I understand not wanting to give away game plans but releasing a depth chart wouldn’t hurt anything IMO. I’m sure if the B12 did have guys trying to find out more about their opponents they wouldn’t be doing it so early in the season or really invest a ton of time into looking at KU currently.

  • you know I’ve tried to be as big of supporter of Coach Beaty but man this is really getting old. - - Every year - - Every dang year. You can’t tell me that these 3 guys are that close that this guy can’t make a decision who he wants to go with for his QB. - -What you gonna do when you have a tough decision to make Coach? - -I mean really.

If you can’t even come up with an answer for who your starting QB is gonna be at this stage then what are you gonna do about making a crucial decision in a game condition if and when that decision could ever quite possibly determine a game - -which in turn could determine your fate --this is what - - - -3 yrs in a row now we can’t even decide who the starting QB is gonna be?

If that’s the case and we can’t truly separate our QB’ S - - well then we have seen the results in the past from 2-3 - so here I’ll make it - - take the one’s we got put them on the O-Line and switch the Center to our QB for cryin out loud - can’t do any worse right? - I mean you know I’m kidding but dang come on now make a choice and LET’S GO

  • I have defended Beaty over and over, but I agree this BS is so annoying and just dumb. His biggest issue is he clearly can not evaluate talent when it comes to the position because KU hasn’t had a decent QB since Todd. Secondly, it makes no sense to hide your starting QB and or name the QB before the first game.

  • @Woodrow Evaluating talent isn’t the biggest issue. KU’s talent isn’t 20-30 points inferior to the rest of the B12.

Beaty’s issue is his indecisiveness. He cannot stick with a decision. 3 OC’s in 4 years but even the coordinators have changed positions this offseason, 4 offensive systems in 4 years, most of the position coaches change roles every offseason. There’s no consistency in the program. Players are hearing a different voice each offseason telling them how to do something. That doesn’t build consistency. That type of turnover and shuffling on his staff has done nothing to help these players develop. I think Clint Bowen is the only coach that’s still in the same job he was in when Beaty was hired, but even his position responsibilities have changed so even that claim is only half true.

As much as I want Beaty to prove everyone wrong this year, there’s a reason why apathy has set in and it’s because Beaty has done nothing to generate any kind of excitement around this program because he can’t stick with a decision. He has built the foundation of Kansas football on sand and that’s why there’s little stability within the program now.

  • This is laughable, imo. Give one guy the most reps and build rapport with the rest of the offense. The decision should have been made before the season. It isn’t a tough decision. Either you air it out and (probably) Bender should start. Or you attack using the option and Kendrick is the choice.

But pick it already. If you are worried about gaining an advantage on Nichols state, you might as well already be fired.

  • You have to have a QB to win. Period. So @Texas-Hawk-10 yes Beaty’s biggest issue is that he has not found one that is even close to competent. I can’t even count the number of QB’s that he has has in camp on the team and tries and none of them are worth a F*ck. So until he or the next coach can find a QB that is Big 12 / P5 caliber his team has zero chance.

  • @Woodrow All I’m gonna say in response to your post is , as I’ve said multiple many times. I don’t give a rat’s ass you say until we have a QB that is the big 12 caliber - - again we could have Tom Brady - - - Aaron Rogers who the f - - - ever directing this team , you could have them back there and if our OFFENSIVE LINE is NOT any better then it has been in the past ain’t gonna make 2 cents worth of difference.

I actually feel Kendrick/Carter could run this team IF they weren’t spending 95 % of their time running for their lives, and or getting buried from lack of protection. If our offensive line can’t pass protect with a tinkers dam – if our QB’S do not even have enough time to let the play develop , play out - -hell if our QB’S don’t have time to check of go to a 2nd/3rd option - -have time to let our receivers run their routes - - - -hell our QB’S don’t even have time to half the time to just even throw it away because of pressure. - - I would be willing to bet at least 1/2 of the interceptions come as a result from our QB’S being drilled while trying to throw the pass - as a lack of pass protection.

We as fans are so quick to blame the QB’S and I’m as guilty as any other at times but seriously it all starts with protection. - Same with the running game - if this dam offensive line can’t open holes hold a block , contain then we are screwed. - You could have any great running back wouldn’t make a difference if there is not a hole to run through then were screwed he is going to look bad , but if there is no where to go he gonna be buried.

Bottom line is: - - Our Offensive line just HAS to be better period. this is where it starts. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • Justin McMillan leaving LSU. Would be able to play immediately if I’m not mistaken. Would at least like to bring him in if he was interested.

  • @Woodrow If Beaty ever made a decision about who the QB was and gave that person 95% of the first team reps, that would help a lot. Instead, each QB is only getting 33% of the reps and are constantly looking over their shoulders during games.

Peyton Bender has talent, there’s a reason Mike Leach recruited him, the kid has talent. David Beaty has failed to develop that talent because he refuses to name Bender or either of the other QB’s the starter and give them the reps they need to become successful.

  • Went to fb kickoff in wichita. First, the coach said was that he was sure we all wanted to know who was starting at qb. Then he never said another word about it. I tell you, the guy is so personable. He talked a lot about recruiting in the wichita area and keeping it quiet so as not to get everyone else from the big 12 on them. he said pooka, I think willams is going to be really fun to watch. Jeff long is a complete turn around from zero personality sz. I got to meet him and he was very nice and genuine! If you every get a chance to go to one, it’s a fun time. People are so nice and friendly. You wouldn’t know how bad our fb is from the support shown to the program.

  • Here is an article about the potential QB to keep you busy.

  • OK guys , let me apologize for this in advance - - BUT I’m gonna RANT - - -I’m gonna RAVE - - I’m gonna CUSS - - - I’m gonna VENT , I’m sorry I can’t take it any longer.

OK so here is the deal , call me a lunatic - - - insane - - moron - - I don’t give a flying rat’s ass I am DONE. I’ve prided myself - - I’ve tried really hard , maybe not as much here but on OTHER boards , when I go and see bashers of Coach Beaty day - - after day - - after day people no matter what you could tell some of these people we had just landed the # 1 rated QB in the nation - - we had just landed the # 1 running back in the Nation - - we had just landed the # 1 defensive lineman in the Nation and they STILL wouldn’t be happy - -they STILL would find somehow to twist things around just so they could hear themselves bitch. - -YA THOSE kind of people. - - I’ve ALWAYS tried to back Coach against these people. - - - - I’ve tried - - - I swear to GOD I’ve tried -I’ve tried soooo hard to stick with Coach - - but NOW umm , umm , umm - -I just can’t do it any more - - I can’t. - - This guy gives me NOTHING to work with - how can you try and support someone when he has nothing for battle. I feel like I’m going into war for him with nothing more then a used # 2 pencil and ONE sheet of wide lined note book paper. - - welp I’m DONE - - DONE-DEE - - - -FINISHED - -it’s a WRAP

WHY ? - -this guy I swear to GOD - -this guy - - David Beaty that is supposed to be the Coach of our KU Jayhawks - -this guy for the 3rd straight year - -he can’t even choose a fricking QB before game day - it seems. - Holy fricken crips. - -Just read off the LJW here we go - - - -AGAIN. - - the guy says " we just need ONE more look " - - - -" has not seen enough " - - - - - " Doesn’t want to rush an announcement just to make it " - -OH MY GOD. come on man - -you can’t make a decision again for the third straight year on who you want your starting QB to be?

You need ONE more look? - -what the hell have you been doing? - -have you been watching? - - ONE more look? - -jumpin - - gee - -hossa - -fats -what the hell you gonna do - -right before kickoff are you gonna ask the ref’s if you have enough time for ONE more look at your QB’S to see who you want?

You haven’t seen enough? - - -come on man get real. - -You have had all of spring practice/drills - -you have had these fall practices - - you don’t know ? - - you can’t choose? - -you want me to pick him for ya? - -how about this flip a coin best two out of three - -OR , OR , OR how about rock – scissor paper?

You don’t wanna rush? - -hell that’s not in jeopardy - - BELIEVE THAT -this has become such a joke , I mean no wonder we are the laughing stock and everyone wants to schedule in Football. - -playing us is stuff the stat time. - -how can we expect these kids to preform with ANY confidence - - expect to have any stability in our program when we have a Coach that can’t even make a dam decision about who he is gonna run onto the field at QB? - -My question too is - -if it is such a migraine of a head ache for you to decide who the hell you gonna start at QB in a game - -then how in the hell are you EVER gonna be able to make a decision in a critical part of the game. - -I sure the hell hope you don’t have that hard of time deciding what to do when you use the bathroom - -wipe? - - -or not wipe? -all I can say is DAM MAN - - -could we please find someone to lead this team.

OK again sorry guys I really am but mercy the flood gates just opened - - I couldn’t hold back anymore. - -I don’t know how many times I tried to defend this guy . BUT when he gives you NOTHING then how the hell can you defend him? - -what do I try and defend his Texas accent? – -NOPE I’m done now - -wore myself out , worked myself into a sweat - -my Vent is over - -my ranting is over- -my cussing is over - someone please tell me again when Basketball starts. - -It’s sad - it’s just down right pathetic sad - - sorry to take up so much space but I’ve been holding back for a LONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNG time - -I tried Coach but with this - -sorry I can’t save your ass any more. Lastly now that I have kind of regrouped I’ll stil end by saying - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • I hate how little Beaty tells the media and let’s them in on anything, as I’ve said no ones worried about who starts at KU football besides the fans and players/coaches. They will have another scrimmage tomorrow, that Beaty said would help. Basically this up coming week is the last week of camp. The next week is a game week where you should have just about every position figured out for the most part. Beaty offered a “No Comment” on whether it was still a 3 horse race. I personally just don’t see how you can’t tell who the hell is doing a better job now several weeks into camp. I also wonder if it’s down to 2 and he just doesn’t want to say. At this point i don’t care if he doesn’t even give a name just said they knew who to go with. Splitting all these reps between 3 guys can’t help the offense at all. The starting QB should be seeing 85% of the reps, that helps the offense learn timing and how to play with each other. I’ve always thought timing with receivers was a big thing. I think everyday this pisses me off more, I want Beaty to succeed but some days I wish Long would’ve just canned him at his opening presser.

  • @kjayhawks may be he has a starter, just not telling us.

  • In fairness to Beaty, it is not like he is trying to pick the best of 3 top QBs, he is trying to pick the best (or least bad) of 3 below average QBs. Until the situation changes, the better QBs with power 5 potential are just not going to pick KU; the last decent one that though about joining KU quickly changed his mind and bolted. Good QBs don’t usually fly below the radar like Reesing did and who was an huge anomaly that scouts did not give credit because his size did not fit the profile of the typical Power 5 QB. If only KU could find another Reesing…

  • Let me say this again. Some people want and are trying to place the blame on so called sub par QB’S - - I have to laugh at that , there are some that are ignoring the more obvious facts - -yet some want to ignore and put the blame on the QB’s. Our QB’S are not the problem - -ARE NOT. - Are they a part? quite possibly, but they sure the hell aren’t as bad as some here want to try and make them out to be. Let me say this again how can anyone rightfully judge these QB’S at the present. - We haven’t truthfully been able to see what to do bring to the field.

What we have seen is their ability to get the hell out of the way and run for their lives and trying to do something ANYTHING trying to improvise from yet a broken down play. - Now why is it a broken down yet another play? - Because people some here fail to realize - - acknowledge where the REAL problem lays. Where does the play really start? - -What is the most vital part ?-- The real problem , the honest to GOD’S truth of where our problem lays and I’ll say it again - is THE OFFENSIVE LINE - - THE OFFENSIVE LINE. if you can’t get your big uglies to do what they are on the field for - -it doesn’t matter how good your QB is - - - - he isn’t going to look good, what your gonna see is what appears to be a sub par power 5 QB and in turn a target for people to place blame. - What your gonna see is and you better look quick is what appears to be a sub par power 5 QB because won’t be anytime at all before your gonna see him out for the season from injury. - -WHY? - because the offensive line isn’t doing squat to protect the QB.

Most of our plays end up in our QB being in scramble mode just to keep a play from turning a HUGE loss into a 2-3 yard loss - -because of our true problem the Offensive line that can’t block worth a shit. - -It’s not gonna matter who our QB is until we get the main problem fixed - - -offensive line. Until they learn how to maintain a block for the run/open holes for the running back - - tell they learn how to pass block - it’s not going to matter.

I’m not saying our current QB’S are some monster studs 5 star rated QB’S but they sure the hell aren’t as bad as some try to make them out to be. - I have seen the few times when the play isn’t getting blown up our just a plain horrible play call from the Coach that they are carrying out I have seen signs of them being better then what some people try and place on them -that’s just horse shit. If we are going to point fingers then dam at least point them at the right people - -it all starts with your offensive line and protection

  • @jayballer73 The under-performance by the defense last year was the main contributor to the blow out losses. That was the biggest let down for my expectations. And I don’t attribute much of the opponents’ offensive success to our inept offense. The defensive line and the secondary just didn’t compete on every play. Maybe the linebackers were competent, but certainly not a strength. As fans we focus on the offense and quarterback, but it’s asking way to much of the offense to score more than 40 points a game because our defense gives up so many points. Our 2018 success starts on the defensive side with 3 and outs. Then, the offense won’t get completely overwhelmed with playing from behind. I can’t remember KU teams being so weak defensively.

  • @jayballer73

I believe you misunderstood my post. I did no blame the QBs for the team woes in past seasons; numerous reason for that and the subject of a different thread altogether. I simply indicated that with none of the QBs being Power 5 starting QB caliber makes it difficult to pick one…that’s all.

I agree with this too. yet people complain about the secondary on the defensive side - understand BUT - -here also the majority of the blame as you say should be placed on the D-Line. - -No Pressure. - how many QB sacks on the year? - how many hurries from opposing QB’S ? resulting in INT’S ?

No matter how good/bad a secondary is even really good secondary’s can only contain for so long if your defensive front is allowing the opposing QB to have time enough to eat a sack lunch there is NO secondary that contain receivers for that length of time - it could very easily be on the initial coverage secondary is where they are suppose to be - -but if the front isn’t getting any kind of pressure it is like plucking birds off the cloths line when they have all day to pick out a receiver. - The secondary not good but our D-Line makes them look a lot worse. - -So again it’s both sides of the ball with our line - - O-line - - - - D-line QB isn’t really as bad as some want to make them out - - -Secondary not as bad as some want to make them out. - either way it ALL starts up front. - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

YET how do you know that they are not when they haven’t been given the time to play with a sufficent offensive line. - I think we do have P-5 QB’s but you can’t say for sure we don’t - I can’t say for sure we do at this point. - put them behind an Oklahoma offensive line - -a West Virginia offensive line - -A Ohio State offensive line THEN let us see how they produce. - If we get the same result out of them at that point THEN we can for sure they are not P-5 caliber QB or not. - Yet with the Offensive line they are working behind right now , there is no way we know that 100% without a shadow of doubt.

  • @jayballer73

They are at KU because they are not Power 5 starting caliber QBs, if they were they would be playing elsewhere; unfortunately that is the current status of the program. The only quality QB KU has had recently quickly decommited.

Any QB can look good behind a superior OL and with quality receivers and RBs. Superior QBs play well regardless and actually make the OL and other personal look better.

there is just no winning with you period.-- you only see one side almost comical - -take it I said ALMOST. - -take those same so called superior QB your talking about put them behind the current O-Line we have let’s see how superior they are. - - you say ant QB can look good behind a superior line? - then put our current non Power 5 Qb behind that kind of line and we be just fine - -you just proved my point - -if our current QB was behind a much better line then they would look good - -with the current line they have no time to look like anything , cause they are running for their lives. Our current QB behind this piss poor O-line we have doesn’t have the time to look for quality receivers - - luke warm recievers - -medicore receivers running backs nothing - -all they see is the Defensive lineman barreling down their ass.

I’m not saying the QB’s is Heismans or anything like that - but the way you talk about them they are sure the hell not nearly as bad as you make them out to be. - Again your words ANY QB can look good behind superior OL- -your just solidifying my point put our QB’s behind a superior O-Line and their gonna look good - be better - -end of story done debating with you - -AGAIN - Have a great day. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @jayballer73

I could call your posts mostly or almost comical as well but I don’t out of respect. Is it too much would expect the same in return?

Now, read the entire paragraph and not pick just a portion of it. This is what I wrote…

"Any QB can look good behind a superior OL and with quality receivers and RBs. Superior QBs play well regardless and actually make the OL and other personal look better."

Did I say anywhere that KU QBs were bad? No, I did not, I simply said that they were not Power 5 Starting caliber and we all know that is true. Obviously we disagree so further discussion is moot.

  • Hard to believe but Dayne Krist got some nfl interest after playing at KU.

  • Chryst was definitely NOT the problem for that team. I remember watching a ton of sacks and dropped passes. I mean, even when the guy would make a good pass, we couldn’t haul it in. Hard to stay positive when your teammates can’t pick up your slack.

  • @Kcmatt7 Yes, my point is the QB isn’t the whole issue. The entire team is trash- that’s coaching and recruiting failure.

  • @dylans agreed. Just once you mentioned him I had flashbacks that made me shudder lol. Throw Heaps in there too…

“And a bullet thrown down the middle to Jimmay Mundine, the ball goes through his hands aaaaand THE PASS IS INTERCEPTED.”

Feel like I heard that 100 times.

  • HOLY CRAP but yet WHY doesn’t this decision surprise me? - -After all this time of waiting -After saying talking about how they just might be looking more of a running game this season. - Which they dam well should if you want to take advantage of Pookie & Dom Williams - -try to keep the defense off the field run the clock.

After we wait all this time for him to announce a starting QB - and he just wet’s all over himself and says - - -BENDER - Ol led foot , a guy who has concrete around his feet - - -who at the age of 64 I also bet I’m even more nimble mobile then him. - A guy who is a interception looking for a place to happen. - JUMPIN - - GEE - -HOSSIE - -TOADS - -TYPICAL. - -if you want to invest more into the run THIS should NOT be your starting QB – Stanley and the other QB Miles? - -BOTH are much better options if your going to try and emphasize the run more - -why doesn’t this choice surprise me? - -DAMM WELP late night is getting closer - -chalk up ANOTHER super decision made by Beaty - somebody must of rushed his decision and he panicked. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • Peyton Bender has been named the starter

  • @jayballer73 I think Bender can be a decent QB if the line has improved. Stanley is the turnover machine if you look at the stats. He had only 4 TDs and 7 picks in almost a 100 less attempts than Bender(10 TDs, 10 INts), he also fumbled the ball more in less snaps. I think that Miles could be the future of the program but looking at his fairly modest numbers from Juco a year ago, I don’t believe him to be ready. I’ve always thought it was Benders job to lose. Stanley IMO is the worst of the 3.

  • Here is a link with more information.

  • Bender would have been my third choice so I’m very disappointed in this decision.

  • Woodrow said:

Bender would have been my third choice so I’m very disappointed in this decision.

    Exactly - - Thank you

  • So who would you guys prefer?

  • @Crimsonorblue22 I think Bender had the best arm but I also wouldnt have been disappointed if Kendrick got the nod. As I said earlier, I’m not sure he is ready or has a good enough arm to this point. Bender has the most experience and the best arm. That’s probably why he won the job. The offensive line is a big key to how the QB does. If returning all but one starter and all the graduate/juco transfers Beaty brought in can’t get that group to improve, Beaty flat out will never cut it as a head coach at this level.

  • I think Bender is the best choice for Games 1-3. And that’s how I’m going to look at it. Against a Big XII opponent, Kendrick is probably the better play.

  • Bender is the most talented of the 3 choices. But this also goes against what Beaty said he wanted the offense to look like as well. He said he wanted a more run based offense and Bender does take away the zone read which Stanley and Kendrick can run.

Beaty will almost certainly be gone after this season and hopefully someone who can state their vision for the offense and build and recruit to that vision without changing it every year will be brought in.

  • Kcmatt7 said:

I agree with you on Kendrick - still wish he would start from the get go. - I think it’s just a matter of Coach know’s he is riding a dead horse anyways, if he thought he had any chance of surviving I think it would of been a different choice. Feel like as much as we would like to see Kendrick - -Beaty will probably ride Bender till the cow’s come home - not giving Kendrick much of an opportunity

  • Guess DADDY BILL taking a page off Coach Beaty isn’t naming his starting QB either - -STILL hasn’t named his starter - -must be contagious lol. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

I don’t think so. That was Cozart maybe? Cummings had a bunch of injury issues.

  • @BShark one of them. Was it Boise St. or some mid major? Just another sign of the ineptness of the coaching staff whomever it was. (Probably cozart)

  • @dylans Cozart went on to Boise St, and did fairly well. I actually think I saw where he signed a CFL deal this Summer.

  • Cozart was a back up QB and didn’t have great numbers at Boise and actually cost them a couple of games.

Cozart actually played quite a bit. Completed 63% of his passes had 10 TD to 1 INT and also 4 rushing TD’s. So yea what you said is not factual.

  • Cozart mostly threw screen passes and blew a 20 point lead again WSU. I watched those games he looked slightly better. He had several decent games here against crap comp aswell.
