No NEWS! Per Bill Self

  • @Jayballer54

If the investigation is really going to take until March, they should just declare him ineligible this year. He’s a basketball player. There’s no point in dragging this into March and declaring him eligible on March 15.

  • Potential delay due to Adidas under investigation by the FBI and the Associations of Kansas and Adidas.

I really wish we would go to Nike. Seriously, who wears adidas for basektball? Even UA are more comfortable, these days, imo.

  • @Blown

Wishful thinking. Nike has little interesting KU since it has the big programs like OU and Texas already in the fold and football drives the train. Without a decent football program, KU’s options are limited and no way Nike comes even close to what Adidas pays.

  • @JayHawkFanToo Don’t go using logic on me. I don’t appreciate it.

  • @Blown

If it makes you feel better you can just see it as opinion.🤪

  • @JayHawkFanToo I agree with what you are saying, just messing around. It probably comes down to the $$ offered by Adidas to Kansas Athletics, even if it does create recruiting assymetry.

Wichita St, Duke, North Carolina are a few schools who have Nike, but don’t have good football programs.

    https://kansas.rivals.com/news/zenger-announces-191-million-adidas-deal-top-five-in-the-nation

EDIT: WSU Switched to UA this year. Nike’s agreement with Duke is undisclosed, but recently settled a deal with Michigan St for $169 million.

I figured so, I just wanted to clarify to others that would read your post and assume the rumor was he’s done for the season.

He very well could be ineligible whenever there is a decision. And if the intention is to fight this to March means 1 thing, there would be an appeal to being ruled ineligible.

I’ll settle for having Silvio in a perfect world. I haven’t considered Billy apart of this team since Game 1 and its been easier to enjoy the season looking at it that way

Agree. it’s to bad but sure sounds like that the investigation will continue for some time. Didn’t say but I just feel there is more going on then just a car involved in this whole ordeal.

I agree, if this indeed does continue which it looks like what is hinted at , even if he was in the end declared eligible in March , his season is lost. He for one would just not be able to contribute that much for the team at that point. Plus Coach Self mentioned that we were reaching a point where we have to move on - -we are getting to that juncture. Stating that a a team /staff that Preston & De Sousa had been getting 70-75 % of the reps with the 1st team, and that is not doing the team any good if we do not know if they are even eligible. - -pretty much at a point where thing have got to change - -we are at that point.

I think it’s time that we might as well accept the fact that Billy will not ever put a foot on the floor in a regular season contest as a Jayhawk. - Plus another thing is like you say they rule him eligible then - - -I don’t think for sure we see Billy come back next year either. - Was pretty widely thought /said that Billy was more likely then not a OAD. - -After having to sit this entire season and going through what he has been through , I don’t think there is any way he returns NEXT year.

I think it’s just time for to focus more on what we have a better chance of actually have on the floor - that would be De Sousa, he is a different story and feel he will be cleared pretty soon. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

I think your probably one of the smarter one’s here lol. Sometimes we just want to continue to hold on to things when in reality we know that the chance of what we would like to happen - - IS NOT going to happen. - I think it has gotten to the point, that this has drug out so long that I think pretty much everyone knows deep down , Billy isn’t going to be able to play this year. - It sucks , but it is what it is I too also will be satisfied to have Silvio I think he can bring a lot for us - -such as another big - -depth - -rebounding - -hoping and thinking chances are a lot better of him being cleared - -and soon. - I like your way of thinking on this. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @Blown

I would not say Duke and UNC have poor football programs. Duke 5 bowls in the last 6 years. UNC 8 bowls in the last 10 years. I am not sure KU ever had a stretch like either of those two. WSU does not have a football program but its contract with Nike was very small. KSU with a decent football program gets a total of $12.6M for 6 years or a fraction of what KU gets, which under the new contract will be about $14M per year, I would be surprised if Wichita State get one tenth of that.

KU’s contract with Adidas is the 4th largest in college sports and only UCLA, Ohio State and Texas have bigger contracts. Not bad for a basketball school.

  • @Jayballer54

And Silvio by all accounts will be here for years to come. We’ll get to know him unlike Preston

  • I’m pretty sure we “called it in” for an update and received absolutely no additional information.

Since we can’t DEMAND they speed it up, these call-in’s for updates is an attempt to prod them. I’ve been hopeful that it would work and we would get an answer on Silvio sometime this week. 26-hour window left in my hopes…

  • Found this gem on another board. Bad luck or a legitimate issue?

If Preston isn’t cleared Self will be looking at his fifth year in a row with no contribution in the NCAA tournament from his top recruited big in each class

Embiid (injured) Alexander (ineligible) Diallo (coaches decision) Doke (injured) Preston (ineligible)

Austin Wiley was involved in the FBI investigation as a player that received extra benefits. The situation is not the same as Preston, but it is a decision involving a player receiving extra benefits where Auburn has held him out of playing since the beginning of the season. The NCAA released it’s decision on his case today.

"The NCAA has ruled Auburn Tigers center Austin Wiley ineligible for the rest of the season following a reinstatement decision. Auburn self-reported violations related to Wiley involving recruiting, extra benefits and agents, the NCAA said in a release Thursday. The NCAA said Wiley would be eligible at the start of the 2018-19 season based on its current information in the case. Auburn officials announced before the season opener against Norfolk State on Nov. 10 that Wiley and forward Danjel Purifoy were being held out of competition because of concerns about their eligibility. They haven’t played in a game for the No. 22 Tigers this season. It is alleged in the federal indictment that Person received $91,500 in bribes from financial adviser Marty Blazer, who was a cooperating witness in the FBI’s clandestine probe. Person allegedly gave $11,000 to the mother of “Player 1” and $7,500 to the mother of “Player 2.”

  • @BeddieKU23 now NCAA will have resources to look into KU? And, that took awhile.

One could hope right? One would also like to believe the NCAA has more resources available where they can deal with these issues at the same time. Wiley had been sitting since beginning of November, his connection to the FBI investigation was known earlier. Preston has been sitting since November as well however all his information wasn’t submitted until just before X-Mas.

The biggest issue here is the precedent ruling them ineligible for the year. Who’s to say they won’t employ the same ruling in Preston’s situation with the car or whatever else they are digging for.

  • I think there is more in play than just the car honestly.

  • BShark said:

Wouldn’t be surprising. With how much time has passed one could certainly infer they didn’t accept KU’s findings

  • If Billy is not cleared, I’m kinda wondering what he will do after this no-play season. He won’t become a lottery selection, quite possibly not a first round pick with a guaranteed contract. If “cleared” to play next season will he return?

He’ll be 21 in the fall, if that has anything to do with his decision. Self recruited over him (Dedric). Kids do make the league without playing College Ball although usually those spend their time overseas, I’m sure practice has at least kept him active, in shape etc. Can’t see him being a combine invite which will really limit what he can prove and do but who knows funnier things have happened.

  • @BeddieKU23

I imagine what happens after the first day of classes which I believe is the 16th will be telling, if he is not cleared by then. If he continues to attend classes and maintain an acceptable GPA it probably means he intends to return next season. If he stays at KU but schoolwork lags then he is just staying so he can train for free and he is gone at the end of the semester.

Considering how he has apparently jeopardized his career for a car, I would not be surprised to see him load up the Charger and leave, get an agent, train and try to get drafted.

  • @JayHawkFanToo

It could happen though I don’t think that’s likely. I don’t remember if Self has commented on that scenario or if its been asked.

Self would be extremely disappointed in him if he did given what seems like a considerable amount of resources thrown his way in this situation. Imagine a NBA team inquiring about Billy (to Self) after he hypothetically left the team. Not sure the Preston’s want to burn that bridge…

  • @BeddieKU23

Mamma thinks Billy can be making millions playing elsewhere so I would not be surprised if he explores those options. In the words of former football player Anthony Collins…“Mama’s Gotta Eat.”

  • @JayHawkFanToo

You never know. That would sure put a sour end to this saga

  • Apparently it’s decision day for the NCAA. The USC kid De’anthony Melton just got his execution last night. Similar to Preston…held out since November and just got word.
