SVI returns for senior year

  • @BeddieKU23 BOOYAH!!! đź‘Š

  • @elpoyo Whats wrong Colonel Sanders… Chicken? Its so painfully obvious that you are a tool or a troll or both.

  • @stoptheflop Devonte is fine. He deferred last year - he won’t this year.

  • @KUSTEVE

I hope you are right. Next year is his pivotal year in basketball. He can make his career go much smoother if he can dominate in his senior year.

He is extremely capable. He may be the most-capable player we have had during his years. Pure talent. But he needs to learn to focus his intensity into his game, every single game. Frank was the perfect role model!

  • @drgnslayr thats what I noticed a lot last year and commented on. His focus is lacking periodically and he makes silly mistakes. Frank isnt eligible anymore, so he will need to step it up.

  • @BeddieKU23 You mentioned Vick. I think Vick could start over Svi. He seemed favored down the stretch last season.

Was Vick favored more because Svi was struggling with his shot which affected his entire game?

Definitely he could start. I’ve not wavered in my thought that he’s going to have a big year regardless of whether Svi came back or not.

Here’s one train of thought on what could happen:

Graham, Newman, Svi are all known for being shooters. Do we really need 3 players with similar skill sets on the floor? Now if we insert Vick into the starting lineup instead of Svi we get “athlete” with developing perimeter & driving game. Vick is a better rebounder and had a bunch of hustle plays that extended possessions that are as valuable as stats that show up in the box score.

Will be interesting to see what Self favors.

Another train of thought is he favors Svi because he’s a Senior. We’ve seen Self use that kind of favoritism in the past…

  • @HighEliteMajor So many posters are over-optimistic about the new guys this time of year. I believe Preston and Garrett must earn their spots by quality play from the bench. Unless one of the new guys excels like Jackson and simply can’t be held out of the starting lineup, my starting lineup is: Doke, Svi, Vick, Newman and Graham. These five represent the players with the most experience in the KU system and on the D1 court. Svi and Vick may be counted on for the rebounds that Doke doesn’t get. But, I’m looking forward to being surprised by Coach Self. It seems to happen every year. RCJH

  • Vick was way too close to every off the court problem last year (and had a serious issue the year prior) to earn my trust. A year of keeping his nose clean would sure help. Otherwise I hope he gets booted, regardless of on court production. I want players on the team I’m proud to root for.

  • @dylans I’m done with the off the court issues from the last two years. I know the media, the KC Star and a few others will continue to bring up the past, but I’ve moved on and will gladly focus on this year’s roster of quality young men and a fantastic coaching staff at the best university in the world. RCJH

  • @stoptheflop Good for you! I hate woman beaters though.

…Never heard anything like that about Svi.

  • @dylans remember Calvert wouldn’t sign the release so KU could tell the whole story!

  • @Crimsonorblue22 I’m glad there was no video. Too much smoke for no fire. I hope he proves me wrong.

I think every recruit is of high moral character as soon as they sign, but some prove otherwise. I hope there is no off-court crap this year. I had enough the last few years for a lifetime.

  • @dylans once zenger told mr Calvert he’d be glad to discuss it, all news articles stopped. No more smoke! Transfer!

  • @stoptheflop You know what, that’s a solid starting rotation there. We know the 4 guard line up is killer, scary good. But, I just don’t think that Coach Self will start with that. I think he starts 3 guards and 2 bigs, then when offense or fouls or matchups dictate, then he swings out his “KU death line up”

  • @dylans Aww come on man. I think the kid deserves a second chance. Live and learn man, live and learn. I’m not diminishing the fact that he physically assaulted a woman. But, it happened, its over and I think he has learned from it and will be a better man moving forward.

  • @stoptheflop I don’t think HCBS guarantees anybody a starting spot. They are earned through ability, determination and effort in practice and games. However, he won’t hesitate to yank a freshman for a mistake that would simply earn a more seasoned player a loud vocal comment.

  • @dylans

I believe people still have the presumption of incense until proven guilty. There is no proof that I know that he ever beat his girlfriend and it came down to case of he said-she said.

Have you heard of buyer’s remorse? The son of an acquaintance of mine apparently had sex with his girlfriend (both were underage HS students) and when her father found out and went ballistic, she claimed she was raped. He was found guilty based on her word and now he is in the sex offender registry. She later recanted and now he is trying to get the conviction overturned and get his name off the registry which apparently is considerably more complicated that one would think.

We should not jump to conclusions absent proof or a conviction. The kid deserves the benefit of the doubt and presumption of innocence until proven guilty in a court of law and not on a biased newspaper with an agenda. Just my opinion.

  • @JayHawkFanToo He was found guilty enough to earn a couple years probation by the school. That’s not innocent. I don’t really care at this point. He’s been mentioned in almost every negative article about the team. Maybe he didn’t do it, but was present. Is he just weak and unable to steer people away from trouble or is he the catalyst? Not someone I want my kids hanging out with as everyone around him gets in trouble.

I appreciate the hell out of guys like Svi, Frank, Graham, etc. Guys who gave what they could on the court, took care of business in the classroom, and didn’t run afoul of the law or team rules.

It takes a lot more to earn trust back than to gain it the first time around.

  • I don’t want to beat the kid up about it any further, I’m just leary about him. I’m not going to build a strong supporting case as I desperately want to be 100% WRONG!

  • Well, here is what I’m thinking. What I don’t understand is why we continue to talk about this? This is a subject this has been talked about till it’s been drug into the ground. My take on this, it’s over , it’s the past. We can’t change the past, things that happened in the pas is the past. It’s time to move on. I would think we would want to be talking about more relevant issues. Like talking about our upcoming season - - our trip to Italy - - Our new comers - -Our Transfers, - Our returning players.

This incident with LaGerald is history. If like you say the school (KU ) has him on probation - -then this is what it is, he is dealing with bad decisions he made. He is now paying for that through his probation & he very well could be paying on anything that the legal system has given him. Again the thing is, the past is the past. You and or I have no say we are not the Judge -Jury - Or Convictioner. The Legal system has had it’s say in this. It’s time to move on to more positive things about the team - -the players.

We had our share of Negativism this PAST season - -but now - Josh is gone - - Bragg has transferred- - Vick is dealing with his bad decisions. Really no reason to keep beating this up - -it’s done. So the question is - -WHY do we want to continue to bring this up - - - -AGAIN? -I always say don’t look in the mirror, you can’t change the past, don’t look ahead cause you can predict the future, - -just live today for today . - -Let’s talk about Positive for awhile. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @dylans I believe the whole team was mentioned in every negative comment about the rape in the team dorm. You gonna throw them all under the bus too?

  • @brooksmd I Truly and sincerely apologize I didn’t see who you were referring too. My 1st thought was - -where did he get I was throwing anyone under the bus. - -Again my bad, my eyes are failing me. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @dylans

With all due respect, there is no proof whatsoever that Vick was ever put on probation. Even the Star article indicates that the process used was preponderance of evidence, which means if there is 50.1% chance that he did it and 49.9% that he did not do it then he is found guilty and probation was recommended but there is no evidence that the probation was ever implemented.

    From the Star article…

University investigations use preponderance of evidence standards — which means the matter in dispute is more likely than not to be true — to determine if violations of school policy occurred. It is not known if a report was filed with campus police but Vick has not been charged with a crime.

The KU office recommended Vick be put on university probation for two years, The Star has learned. It isn’t known if Vick was ever put on that probation or, if he was, if he is still on it. He continues to play.

That office declined to discuss the case and referred The Star to Joe Monaco, director of strategic communications for KU’s public affairs office.

“Due to federal law,” he said, “and to protect the rights of all individuals involved, the university cannot comment on individual IOA investigations.”

Had they found that Vick committed a serious offense, the case would have been referred to the police and criminal charges would have been filed. If a criminal act took place and KU did not reported it, it would place itself in legal jeopardy and I would think the school would not do that even for an elite athlete.

As far as I know and according to Coach Self, he was not allowed to see the details or findings of the case and we don’t know if the female in question received the same alleged recommendation or if any of it was ever implemented; if it had, I am sure the Star would have been all over it.

So let’s not rush to judge something for which there is no evidence.
