It’s wonderful to be positive. However Lightfoot does not at this time have the skill set or size to play at a this level let alone the Kentucky game. Hustle and grit get you only so far. We were already crazy thin up front now even more. Our guards will be so exhausted come March I wouldn’t be surprised if we lose by the 2nd round. I’m not trying to be Debbie Downer just realistic.

I am not sure weight is an issue. At 6’8" and 210 pounds he’s is only 10 pounds lighter than Perry Ellis or Jamari Traylor, or Justin Wesley, about the same weight Bragg was as a freshman and a whole 20 pounds heavier than Kevin Young, among other comparable players.
The main problems with Lightfoot is his lack of game time experience and sounds like this will be changing now.

KY has a lot of 18 yr olds also. Isnt Mitch a top 30-50 kid who we’ve seen have a knack around the rim, a little KYo?
Our other frosh is JJ, who is absolutely a KY-level kid.
And the seasoned vets we take into the game are BIFM, DG, LL, & Svi. Add what Vick can do, might have a game…

@ralster on paper, yes. But the season has shown our guys as a team and individuals as a whole have not improved since last year. Our guards must be in dream land if they think their level of play is good enough.

I dunno, maybe this isn’t quite as bad as what I thought. – I mean like some other people I have spoken with, actually what was Carlton bringing to the floor other then spelling Landen for spot minutes and bringing 5 extra fouls to the 5 spot. - - I mean it isn’t like he was putting up huge offensive numbers or huge rebounding numbers, mainly at the present he was just replacing Landen when he was in foul trouble or giving Landen some few minutes of rest.
In that aspect, Mitch can do that or the combination of Mitch & Dwight. The 5 spot is and area really is or hasn’t been an area where were getting a lot of production from anyways this year. - Just looking for like 6-7-8 points out of that spot and some rebounds - If we can get those kind of points and production out of the combination - if Dwight can even combine for the 6 pts and 5 rebs that Bragg was giving us then we are no worse off – I don’t think we would be that worse off defensively , so they MAY off set.
I mean if this would of been Frank, or Devonte, or Josh or even SVI then that for sure would of been an absolute disaster, seeing as they are the offensive weapons, but with Carlton if you think about it on the offensive side really not that big of drop because we still have the extra fouls and I know between Mitch and Dwight they can get 6-7 points and 5-6 rebounds
Who knows, may be a blessing in disguise also yes we may just start having to play a little more zone to protect Landen – -BUT in a way might not be a bad thing, might be a good thing - -might help cover up our re-occurring defensive lapse off getting beat off the dribble drive, straight line drives to the hole with no help. Might make some of thse NOT SO good 3 pt shooting teams in the league take more three point attempts from the outside keep them out of the lane - -we shall see I reckon. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

I’m pretty sure the Squid’s strategy will be to drive every play and get Lucas in trouble.
Hell, I’d start Lightfoot and let him get two or three good hard hacks in the first 5 minutes while we jack threes on the other end. When we’re up 20-5 put Lucas in.

I like the think positive and rally behind talk. I need more of that. But have you seen the build on that 6-9 260lb beast from ky? Without dok, we have no one who can match up with him.

This could be a preview of how we lose in March. Two athletic guards to match up with ours (but who can actually play defense), and solid 4/5 player.
Until Vick, Svi or Bragg actually shows up to win us a game, I’m skeptical of us doing anything. Everyone rotation player from that 2012 squad won us a game. Kevin Young, Releford. Everyone.

@JayHawkFanToo I have a gut feeling we will see improvement on a game to game basis. Mitch has some hops and a bit of a chip-the good kind .

I would not mind a loss today and even a few in Big 12 as long as team stays healthy and can develop some chemistry heading into March.

Bragg has had a very disappointing year for sure, but anyone with eyes and a brain can see Mitch doesn’t belong here. He sucks and when he plays we are in trouble.”

@BShark not a classy thing to say at all, but it is baffling why Self has recruited bigs the way he has. Even a senior Lightfoot is not someone you want going against legit and athletic bigs.

@Crimsonorblue22 he will improve but he does not have a high ceiling. You can have lower rated guys (but still in the top 100-150) that are athletic, have a long wingspan and good bball IQ. Lightfoot does hustle and probably has a good bball IQ, but he is not that athletic or long. People complain about us not having size -well, you aren’t getting that with Mitch. I just dont believe that this is the best we can do recruiting wise. What about Tyler Davis? What about Kavier Shepherd? Those guys have legit size and skill.

@Crimsonorblue22 and no, I don’t want mostly OADs, but I would like two or three per season along with a capable supporting cast that plays fundamental basketball, doesn’t turn the ball over and wont get outhustled.

@HawkChamp I think recruiting a Lightfoot every year is fine. We wouldn’t want a whole team of them. But, having recruited Lightfoot is not our problem this year…Doke getting hurt and Bragg not developing as expected are our issues…hard to predict both of those things happening.

@Hawk8086 Bragg was never a banger that could play the 5. He is soft mentally and has not decided to fight back. Even if Coleby is still a little slow I say play him. At least he tries.

@HawkChamp A lot of truth to what you say. Part of Bragg’s issue is that he is a 4 being forced to play the 5…Self has acknowledged that. I am surprised that Coleby has not received more chances. Of course, we don’t know how he has looked in practice.

You obviously don’t know much about Lightfoot. Read this article for starters and particularly the part about “elite athleticism” not by one but by several well know analysts…

@Hawk8086 I dont care what goes on in practice. Bragg has been terrible in games - last time I checked, our record indicates the results of games, not practices. Coleby is 6’9 and has girth. Of course, you just watch Self refuse to play him. I dont think he could play worse than Carlton.

He is smaller that Perry Ellis who really was a SF and much like Lightfoot was pressed into playing PF. Again, read the scouting reports before you post incorrect information.

What part of my previous post don’t you understand? KU has several players that can play the wing/SF; the only available players that can play PF are Lightfoot and maybe JJ…why do you think KU has been playing the 4-1 scheme instead of Coach Self’s preferred 3-2? again SMH…

@HawkChamp I think coaches would say that guys earn their playing time, in part, by what they do in practice. I agree that I would like to see what Coleby can do…we will probably get our chance.

@Crimsonorblue22 Agree. He has played some with Lucas. I think if he played a lot with Lucas we would see better results…but the way things have worked out…we won’t get that chance.

Coach Self has compared him to a more athletic Perry Ellis. Because of need, Perry played the 4 until his senior year when Coach Self belatedly acknowledged and he was allowed to play SF, step outside and hit the 3…guess what position Perry is playing in the D League? Do you realize that Lightfoot is the same height and only 3 pounds heavier than JJ who is listed as a guard? KU official roster does not differentiate between PGs and SGs and they are all listed as G; likewise, it does not differentiate between SF and PF and they are all listed as F.
Do you honestly think that Lightfoot has the build or skill set to play PF? I don’t think so; I believe he is more of a natural SF. Do you realize that if Lucas fouls out and Coleby is unable to play Lightfoot might be playing Center? Is he qualified to pay Center? Obviously not, but there does not seem to be other options, right?
