House of The Stubborn Coach

ChatGpt is getting good at this… first take.
Title: “House of the Stubborn Coach” (To the tune of “House of the Rising Sun”)
[Verse 1]
There is a man in Lawrence town,
Who coaches Jayhawk ball.
He’s got a five-star on the bench,
But won’t play him at all.
[Verse 2]
Oh, Flory came with promise,
A rim protector tall.
But Bill just sticks with KJ,
Won’t let that freshman ball.
[Verse 3]
Now KJ’s tough, no question,
A warrior down low.
But size don’t lie, and Bidunga’s got
The length to block the show.
[Verse 4]
The fans cry out, “Hey, play the kid!”
The future’s on the pine.
Yet Bill just shrugs, his stubborn ways,
Say, “KJ’s doin’ fine.”
[Verse 5]
Oh mother, tell your children,
If they sign with KU blue,
They might just sit if Bill decides
He’s loyal through and through.
[Verse 6]
So now we wait for Flory’s day,
If ever it shall come.
‘Til then, it’s KJ’s battle,
And Self’s the stubborn one.

Watched Zuby play tonight…. Wow! Should have focused on him staying. Another victim loss from the “wait your turn” approach with Self. But then, maybe we wouldn’t have landed Flory if he stayed. Still…
-
@drgnslayr The preacher told us not to expect what our parents have the instant we got married. Our parents had to work to get where they’re at. How is this any different? Dude bailed at the first sight of adversity - he was starting!!!
-
Self chose hunt though. You are not going to recruit over kids today and have that be okay with them. Udeh was the same situation. Zuby is definitely one that got away
-
@BeddieKU23 I was fine with losing Udeh because I think Hunter is a better overall player. Zuby was the one I was more disappointed in losing because even in their one year, I thought Zuby showed more long term potential than Udeh did and would’ve been a great back up option for Hunter last season. With a similar growth trajectory, it might’ve even made KU decide to move on from Hunter after one season like the original plan was and Zuby starts this year.
-
It sucked to lose both at the time and Zuby certainly had the long term potential that he’s obviously now hit. I think he just ended up where he was valued and given the opportunity. Even now he would have been behind Hunt and KJ so in the end it was the best move for him. I don’t see any scenario where Self moved on from Hunt.
-
“No scenario where coach moves on from Hunt” is insanity, given the historical success we have had on the defensive end under Self and how much of a liability he is on that end.
-
Self wanted Hunt to stay after last year. They were aggressive with NIL as well, to land and keep him here.
I do agree his weaknesses are an issue on both ends.

Zuby played 11 minutes per game last season. He still came off the bench and played comparable minutes to what he would’ve played here. And if he developed at a similar rate to be a starter level player here, then Self may very have deemed Hunter expendable enough to utilize that NIL money on other players.

How does this work? We limit our recruiting or lose key pieces? What if Cal thought that way?
-
@drgnslayr Cal would recruit over KJ and Dajuan in a heartbeat
-
@approxinfinity Cal wouldn’t have recruited either player to begin with. Cal doesn’t and won’t develop talent IMO. I’m fine with taking chances on guys and coaching them up. Worked great with Graham, Mason and Ochai. But the other side of the coin is if it doesn’t workout (Juan and KJ) you don’t have to ride their coattails for 3 or 4 years.
-
I’ve always supported developing players over OADs. But then that doesn’t give those players a guarantee on PT. I say this but also think KJ might have been our best guy today. Our team didnt come ready but KJ did. Counter that though… it seems like Flory laid off the gas now and is playing on cruise control. He hasn’t been the same since his demotion.
-
In his interviews during the Iowa State game, Bill looked pretty defensive and irritated. Hope he was prepared for the heat to level up.
As others have said, I think Coach’s staff appears to have some issues.
I wish instead of fully burning out and riding into the sunset, Self would have brought in brighter, hungrier, younger basketball minds and backseated more. He seems to have surrounded himself with old friends, and maybe people subservient to him and created an insulated workplace that has adjusted very poorly to the portal era.
Everything about the current roster construction, development, and performance says a level of cruise control from the top of the staff down. Bills health scare did make him calm down but that also may have translated to being less hungry and motivated to navigate uncharted portal waters and find a championship roster.
I believe at this point in his career, Bill Self is understandably more in love with his process than in winning. This might have kept the lights on and the family feeling, but it isnt going to compete at the highest level in an evolving marketplace.
Our saving grace will be the level of talent on next year’s roster. The staff has gold in Flory and DP, and has another potential first round talent in Elmarko.
Flory=Gandalf, The Wizard
DP=Aragorn, Return of the King
Elmarko=Frodo, The Ring Bearer
If we can retain this group, Elmarko can heal fully, and we fill out the rest of The Fellowship with amiable fellows, Self and Co may just defeat Sauron before sailing into the Undying Lands.
Let us hope.

Doesn’t sound like the players and coaches on same page. Never a good thing
