McCullah Situation

“He’s structurally fine and currently not experiencing pain. He fractured his knee when he was younger (completely un related) and is being extremely careful. According to the people who have performed the MRI’s (3) he should be absolutely good to go and it is entirely mental at this point for him. He’s seen the KS area specialist and the lakers team doctor and both have given him the green light. Both have also said he’s not the first guy to have something like this where it’s completely mental and they doubt whether they can go back out there or not. I was shocked to hear this as Kevin seems like an absolutely warrior but they compared him to Toney of the chiefs.”

@BShark oh good gosh! Scouts aren’t gonna like that!
-
Wonder what his tough linebacker dad thinks of that?
-
To answer a potential question this is not from an article it’s from someone I talk to who is golf buddies with a lot of medical people in the area. So, not officially reported and obvious never will be. Very interesting though, hopefully he can get over it.
Self definitely has sounded frustrated about this whole situation.
-
@BShark I would think he wanted the nba bad enough he’d get out there and play. Send him to a shrink. Juan and Hunter need to talk to him. KJ!
-
What was up with the bloody leg sleeve around the knee a few games ago?
-
Poor Kev. Hey, if it hurts, it hurts. I don’t blame him for being conservative given his history.
-
Not experiencing pain

Pain can be mental/psychosomatic for sure.
-
Basically Remy 2.0 situation
-
@BeddieKU23 well thats an exciting thought.

If we have a good tournament run with a healthy Kevin, do we need a STRUCTURALLY FINE sign in AFH???

exactly - -and he wants to play NBA ?

We need to make one up so we can carry it from game to game in the NCAA Tourney

Pain is a very subjective thing, but just because there is no structural abnormality seen on MRI does not mean that the person experiencing pain is having psychosomatic symptoms. For example, there are many people that have had a previous injury or surgery and in the process of the body healing itself makes a scar that gradually remodels itself and gets smaller. Now suppose a nerve traverses through the scar and begins getting pinched causing a painful signal to occur that will not show on any imaging or maybe a recent injury is causing inflammation that causes compression of a nerve with pain. The inflammation is subtle enough to also not show on imaging, but if you press on the area or move it just the right way elicits pain. If he is having pain, then I will believe him until proven otherwise. Also a nerve comduction study would not be helpful in this situation.

I had been hearing similar things myself. It makes it a little more disappointing he couldn’t hit a free throw in Manhattan knowing this (1 for 5 with 2 front ends) but hope he can take some time here and get is groove back.
-
Hopefully him seeing us struggle will help him cope smh

Pretty fitting news for this season. Guy is healthy and has a mental block…

… I mean, technically, he’s not healthy until mind AND body are good to go. Give him the support and help him achieve.
We all win when he wins.
-
Structurally sound and pain free are different things. It could be it hurts like a sob, but he won’t cause further injury. Extreme pain with no structural damage made me drop a chair I picked up, wince when I try to raise my arm, etc. I had extremely limited motion range due to pain, but nothing stood out on the mri or x-ray. Yet the PT wants to see me for another month, and the surgeon wants to do exploratory surgery. Hope Kevin gets healed up soon, but some injuries just take a long time to heal.

I’m not trying to knock him…just feels like par for the course this year.

If he’s protecting his draft stock which is apart of the issue here, he has put Self in a very tough spot.
Of course nobody wins if Kevin isn’t 100%. I have a feeling this has a way of resolving itself soon due to the timing of things

Sounding more and more like there might be a little more drama to this then what has been told. Hearing that Bill is not to happy, and is trying to get McCullar back on the floor. - -It’s leaking out to National media now, Talk from Mccullar camp is he doesn’t want to risk his position for the NBA , and then Coach saying if he doesn’t come back until after or until the Big 12 tourney he might as well not play because he is going to stink playing bad. - - Don’t know myself not sure what is the true story at this point
-
Boiling point today where I believe a decision will be made. Kevin was seen working out with one of the student managers in a gym, per trusted source.
-
-
Bill speaking in just under an hour. No idea if Kevin situation will be addressed.
-
Kev BACK most likely. Maybe even against Baylor.
-
Hope Kevin is healthy and effective.

Self played the long game showcasing Timberlake. Made mccullar feel bad
-
@BShark thx🥰️

If Kev returns to form we can make a deep run. That Maui team is still there.

This is why I have not freaked out about this season. With Kevin this team can make a run to the Final 4 or better. Without him, it doesn’t really matter. I have chosen to stay optimistic that Kevin will return to form.

@FarmerJayhawk the Maui team got spanked by Marquette, would rather see the team that beat UConn
-
@BeddieKU23 his draft stock continues to plummet from what I’ve seen, bleacher report had him highest at 25 but not playing the rest of the year while guys have great games in the NCAAs would pretty much lock him into not getting drafted.
-
He’s going to play imo and if he can recapture his early season form he could move back up a bit. March has a way of helping guys due to how many eyes are on the games so thats another area he can recover his momentum.
He did establish good cred with scouts etc with how good he was in the first 2 months. But he’s slumped in conf play and now has missed 20+ days recently so that doesn’t help him. His durability for the next level also has to be a question. Hopefully he comes back with his legs recharged and he can prove his first half shooting #s wasn’t flukey.
-
If he focuses on team ball he’ll be great, it’s when he tries to do it all it hurts us.

Mentioned this in another thread but he is the only guard willing to hunt his own shot when things break down. We do need that!
-
you know something to ponder on. IF Kevin does come back and plays, well we have all heard numerous times about how we have maybe the best starting five - - -that might be open for debate but possible. Anyways Kevin comes back rides this thing through well then in the overall broader scheme of things- -the " BIG PICTURE "- - maybe this might of helped the team a smidge. Our bench, the bench that w have El Marko , Braun , & Jamari - it might of helped them some. Give them some floor time, and then Nick goes back to coming off the bench- -if Coach would continue to run the same substituti0n pattern that he has been running lately with Kevin out, just might be helpful and we just might be able to at least make a little deeper run in the NCAA’S = - -you have to remember longer time outs in the Tourney, the bench has been able at least been able to sustain without giving up big chunks - -giving the starters a little more break. - Plus with Nick getting extended playing time I think he might be a little better , his confidence level looks like it might be getting some better - -so who knows. Jamari always seems to provide some spark - -who knows.
-
@BShark those r 2 different things to me. I agree w/you. We beat Baylor at home w/out Kevin, gotta think we can beat them there w/him. I have some faith!
-
@kjayhawks of course. Was more saying a neutral court team that can do it. AFH won’t help us in the tournament.
-
@BeddieKU23 yes best case scenario for all parties is he plays and is back to early season form. We make it to the second weekend of the tournament and he gets a first round pick.
-
Believe he may actually play against Baylor.
-
What a miraculous turnaround of events.

I wish I knew this for sure, because I would take me some KU +5 w/ Kevin.

This is of course a tricky situation but I do know he was a full participant in practice recently.

Go for it!

Game time decision today, per Jeff Goodman.

@BShark good gosh!
