I thought he showed a little moxie in last few games. No show tonight- is he injured??
This was a short bench game for Self.

DaJuan can/will make those driving sweeping shots as we have seen before. They were clean looks but just didn’t fall. Their center wasn’t really a huge factor and we should credit Hunter for using his stout frame and savvy to good effect. Clingan looked like he has close to an 8’ wingspan and taller than Hunter. Hunter frustrated him while outscoring, out rebounding, out shot blocking and all with zero turnovers. And a special thanks to ESPN studio hosts saying UConn will beat us in the post season. So sorry we pissed them off. UConn had no answer for KJ who can shut down a shooting guard and jump rim high and monster jam like a cat jumping on a Christmas tree. I think Elmarko, who is as chill as my granddaughter when I tell a Dad joke, is going to have a breakout game soon. Who else gets excited when our 6’9" SG/SF/?? splashes one, or two? And Kevin, who is like our garage band front man, gets all the chicks. Self can just keep on cashing those royalty checks. I think he likes this team. He should.

Jamari played the last 5 seconds or so of the game. Just not in Bill’s circle of trust yet. Bill try’s to protect guys from being exposed, sometimes a little too much.
-
Honestly the lack of playing time for Jamari is baffling. He’s looked better than elmarko and furphy all season! I’m still waiting to see what Elmarko is suppose to bring vs Jamari. He maybe passes slightly better? Jamari is a better defender, better rebounder, shooting is better than Jackson. It’s really just a freshman year grimes versus ochai situation right now
-
@jayhawks2010 the shooting is the big one. Jamari has shown he can help us there. Seems confident with his shot. Elmarkos shot seems flat and forced at this point.
If we are running Dajuan 38 min Jamari is the logical fit on O. But our D was good last night and Elmarko was a factor.
-
Jamari being 5-19 from the floor and not having guard skills are both factors. He also has a far lower ceiling than Elmarko (easy to tell imo) so I like Self going for the high upside play here. Elmarko will be ridiculously good eventually.
Furphy is grading out better than Jamari (check any advanced metrics site) and is 50% from the floor with more shots so I’m not sure how you can say Jamari has looked better.

Jamari is 1-7 from 2 and 5-19 overall from the floor. The shooting thing is a bit of a myth.
Elmarko is 15-16 from the FT line which is a very positive sign. Also has a very nice mid range pull-up last night. I think he is very nervous on the threes. Things will improve for him, he has a good base to work with.
-
@BShark i think its because Elmarko appears to not be able to shoot the 3.
-
All I can say is:
IF THE FIELDHOUSE IS ROCKIN’
DON’T BOTHER KNOCKIN’
I haven’t seen the crowd that amped in years!!!
-
@BShark 15-16 from FT line for elmarko is massive. We need that badly

If he sticks it out I think he is a guy that gets into the mid 30s later in his college career. Game needs to slow down for him. Think there were some good signs last night outside of the bad turnover late.
Furphy and Elmarko are pretty close to legit contributors at this point. Just need to see a little bit more improvement and consistency.

For sure, and tells me his shot isn’t broken.

Bill said that was one of if not the best atmosphere he’s been in last night and it looked it on TV. This was hands down Hunters best defensive performance. Was anyone there last night? Have they started any of the renovations? The isles looked a different color and the lights seemed to be different from last season. Looking at my Facebook memories I was at the December first game against seton hall last year.
-
This is what frustrates me about the fanbase sometimes. People complain about not letting high ceiling freshmen play through mistakes and develop so they can help KU in March/April at the expense of a couple of wons in November/December. Elmarko Jackson was a projected late lottery pick entering the season. Johnny Furphy has an NBA future, yet those same people are complaining about how many minutes they got compared to McDowell last night. Those fans can’t have it both ways. Elmarko Jackson needs to be given time to develop as a PG and I hope Self let’s Jackosn run a bit of PG this month since KU has a manageable schedule before conference play starts.
-
I guess agree to disagree. I think Jamari has way higher ceiling. He has way more nba athleticism. If you had no idea of their ranking coming into the year, has Elmarko shown anything that says lottery pick guy versus Jamari? Jamari’s shot mechanics are better than elmarko. Jamari had the second highest plus minus of any player in the Maui tournament. Only guy higher was the Marquette big guy. Rebounding defense has been better out of him. I guess just different perspective of what I’ve watched. I’m not saying elmarko is awful, but I don’t see the separation. Furphy can shoot but he’s pretty slow and it shows. Either way all 3 of those guys will get better and it will be fun to watch. Go Jayhawks!

@jayhawks2010 Maybe BS is just biding his time, letting Marko develop now, and once that is well along, will gradually add McD to the mix.
And maybe McD is not very impressive in practice. Self always says that is a huge factor in who gets more PT.
-
Obviously, HCBS stressed defense in the past couple of practices. The team responded… That was one of the more maniacal defensive efforts I have seen from KU in a good while. Makes you think… Can they do this all the time? Maybe the fact that it was a huge home game amped them up so that they were able to sustain that high intensity effort for a long stretch of the game. It takes an enormous amount of energy to do that, so it might not be feasible to ask this team to come up with that kind of defensive effort every game.
The game would have been a lot less close if not for Newton. Bilas was right… He hit at least 3 end-of-the-shot-clock crazy threes that would have been career college highlights Had he done that just once or twice per season.
Both Timberlake and Braun I think got pulled because they both were slow on a defensive switch. The Nick situation reminds me a bit of Remy Martin. Bill wasn’t too high on Remy for a lot of the season that he was here, but we have a NC banner in the rafters and we don’t have that without Remy Martin, So let’s hope Nick works hard on his defensive effort, which, as we know, will earn him playing time. I still foresee a critical game in which Nick is the difference.
Love it that Juando was trying to drive and score… he did everything right except for adjusting his touch at the very end to lay that ball softly in the hoop. We all know that looking to score is just not in his comfort zone, but of course he does everything else so well that we don’t get very far of course, without him. He should throw up shots each and every time teams back off him at the three-point line, and hopefully over time he will just become more comfortable with doing it and not worry so much about missing.
I’m surprised the commentators did not talk more about what a magical environment that was at Allen Fieldhouse last night. Easily the best home arena in sports in my opinion. Two years ago, I went to my first home KU game (senior night) and I was blown away… The volume is absolutely indescribable. You intuitively realize that something very special is happening all around you, and the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. And last night was probably 50% louder! WOW
Kevin is apparently trying to be the new alpha dog Jalen Wilson. I imagine Coach self has told him essentially that. “You go be the guy when we need it the most.” Those three treys he hit in the second half were beyond massive- he won us the game. It takes large stones to step up and hit those., especially after the last game where he flailed offensively.
And I will take KJ doing those running floater shots in open space all day. It seems to be the most comfortable shot for him, other than layups and dunks.
-
@Bosthawk I think Bill will pick and choose when to try and get the team that amped up. I doubt we see that kind of defensive effort every game. Especially considering the short bench.
-
@Bosthawk I thought the whole production did a great job of showcasing the atmosphere. I doubt if anyone watching needed to be spoonfed a description of what every viewer was already seeing!
-
@mayjay Good point… the electricity was obvious for sure… I think I’m going to rewatch the game for a third time
-
@Bosthawk It’s funny about watching taped games…my wife, although knowing the outcome, still gets totally stressed watching it. Since we don’t watch again if we have lost, I just laugh at her getting so upset.
Oh, the fun us old retired farts have.
“Heh heh, Mabel, let’s watch the magical electric box, shall we?”
“Why, yes, but let’s take some sedatives to avoid collapsing in fits again.”
-
@Bosthawk Nice summary!
-
@Bosthawk just got home from a neighbors retirement party and talked to a couple that were at the game last night. So jealous! they share season tickets with another lady. They had a blast, she said she 'bout died from the heat. The place was cooking!
-
The game was like zero margin for error was part of it probably. We were lucky they missed that wide open three for the win.
-
@Zabudda yup. KU won, Bill made the right decisions. I don’t trust Jamari yet either, but I love his hustle. Hustle really pays off against less talent, not as well coached teams. But it isn’t enough against top tier teams. The three freshmen all bring something to the table. I hope they stick around long enough to watch them develop.
-
@Zabudda feel like the last 3 was the law of averages, was probably an easier shot that 3/4s of the threes they did make.
