Apparently Kohl has been shopping for a month or more. Didn’t work out here after a lot of buzz leading into the year.
IMO this was just another questionable evaluation for what you paid and needed from that spot on the roster. We no longer can think about long term evals. Regardless of whether Self or the system wasn’t a fit for him or he was simply too young for this stage this quickly, this is why continued improvement on roster building has to jump to the top of this coaching staffs to do list. Rosario and Mbiya could have been replaced with more experienced players ready to contribute more than a few games. The last games they both played in tells you they have potential to compete at this level but simply need more experience and reps.
Got to think a team like Miami would be a landing spot for Rosario this time around. They were a player first time, he’s from there and Lucas is building Miami up quickly it appears

Colorado has now lost its 3 best players to the portal and it hasn’t even officially opened
-
The silver lining on Rosario is that he might be more affordable to keep given there is less tape on him. His lack of court time makes it a bit more difficult for another team to throw bags of money at him.
If we kept Flory and Rosario, it would be amazing given the talent that is coming in. I have a good feeling about Luke Barnett -- under the radar but excellent and committed early and has been steadfast. Might be exactly what the team culture needs.

Rosario showed enough another P5 is going to pay him decent enough….

I will miss Kohl Rosario. I think I will always believe he would have turned into a fan favorite before the portal era.

That’s the one of the biggest issues with how Self is recruiting players right now. He’s stuck in 2020 thinking these guy with potential will wait their turn. Zuby is the prime example of such, Mbiya and Kohl are probably gonna be the next examples of such. I personally don’t blame Kohl looking at Mari and Elmarko stats that stole all of his minutes. They were both good for about 3 games and serviceable about another 3 and that was it. Add in he was a starter early in the year and it probably felt like a slap to the face. We should look at how Arizona and UConn build their rosters by example. Looking at Arizona they picked a much better group of freshmen than we did. That’s why whomever is in charge of our recruiting and roster building should be relieved of their duties right think this second because they are less accurate than the worlds worst weatherman.

@kjayhawks2.0 dang i didnt realize Arizona had so many freshmen

Zuby is not a prime example at all. He only got 11mpg his sophomore year at St. Johns and averaged 4 points.
Mbiya is not going to be some stud elsewhere. Fine 3rd big. Loved his energy. Not a majorly impactful or playable guy all season long. Should have gotten more minutes though.
Kohl will be one of those guys we regret leaving.
Honestly there aren’t many guys that Bill didn’t play that left and went on to be a stud elsewhere the very next season. Q Grimes maybe, but he started and got plenty of run/opportunity. Bryce Thompson maybe, but also got a lot of run.
Zuby may be our biggest ever transfer portal loss, but again he still needed seasoning as a Sophomore

@Kcmatt7 freshman guys spending a year under self and then not doing well elsewhere can be interpreted different ways, could be interpreted as “not a good look”. Compared to guys who contributed elsewhere, came here, underperformed and then went elsewhere and contributed elsewhere again. Might get the sense that Kansas is a meat grinder where only winning matters. Not player outcomes. Even Hunter alluded to it not being fun anymore and the fans getting down on the team.
Money!
Its a gas.
Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash

@Kcmatt7 how about Diggy? Odd example I think, but he killed it at UMD. Not at the level of KU, but impressive.
-
@HoraceZontal Diggy was averaging 20 ppg before KU and its not just Diggy. Basically every portal get that left again had bounce back years after Kansas.
-
@Kcmatt7 Andrew White III is another one. Tyon has been solid for Gonzaga this year too.

He was a scorer on a bad team. Wouldn’t consider that one a miss.

Yea I miss AWIII. But it was mostly BG beating him out more than him not getting his shot. Same skillset and BG was maybe the best shooter in the Bill era.
Tyon I guess. Tough one for me. 7th season guy and a bricklayer. I’m okay with him on another roster.

Did anyone catch the mikey d all american game last night what are your thoughts

How did those teams perform?

@Kcmatt7 about as well as Kansas?

I thought, even though I don't think u get much from those games, Kinney played pretty good D. Had a 3 and made nice passes. I saw at least 1 dunk from him, and a missed dunk. Overall I thought he was good. I missed the first part. Stokes was definitely a team guy, great passes, good dunker, good boarder. Pretty impressed. Paul pierce was there, his nephew is going to Mizzou, he played. Ugh. PP went thru the hand shake line and didn't say anything to Stokes. Thought he did more at the KU game! Think we'd be lucky to get Stokes too.
