The NCAA approved another change to the Basketball transfer window. The madness is only 15 days now and starts the day after the Championship game.

The transfer windows in basketball will now open for a 15-day period the day after each sport's championship game. The changes are effective immediately, meaning this spring the basketball window will be open April 7-21 for men. Previously, the window was open for 30 days and began after the second round of the men's and women's NCAA tournaments.

This one impacting coaching changes

Following a head coaching change, a 15-day period will open five days after the new coach is hired. If no new coach is announced within 30 days and the transfer window has already closed, a 15-day window will open on the 31st day for players from that school.

Let the chaos begin? Sounds like the new NCAA "five for five" eligibility rule is in trouble already!

DENVER (AP) — A federal court dealt a perhaps chaos-inducing blow to the NCAA's new eligibility rule Friday when it ruled that all high school class of 2022 athletes who exhausted their fourth season of college eligibility this spring are eligible for a fifth season this school year.

The ruling from U.S. District Judge Charlotte Sweeney in Denver, expected to be appealed, undercuts the NCAA's plan to have the so-called “five for five” rule go into play starting with athletes who enroll in college in fall 2027.

It also has potential to wreak havoc on rosters across the country — for instance, opening the possibility that an undrafted player in an NFL training camp could decide to try to head back to college for a fifth year this upcoming season.

In granting the preliminary injunction, Sweeney said the players “will suffer irreparable harm without” it. She did not sign onto the governing body’s argument that applying the new rule retroactively would create “roster chaos.”

But NCAA President Charlie Baker said it would in responding to the rulings while referencing a bill in Congress designed to provide the NCAA antitrust protection on the eligibility issues.

“Today's rulings and the chaos they bring to college sports are exactly why it's time to pass this bill,” Baker said.

The Colorado ruling came hours after a Tennessee court granted Jalen Washington, who most recently played at Vanderbilt, and 18 other basketball players a fifth season of eligibility.

In June, the NCAA approved its new eligibility model for Division I athletes that will allow five seasons of competition over a five-year period that begins with their full-time enrollment or the academic year following their 19th birthday, whichever occurs first.

While the ruling in Tennessee applied to those 19 basketball players, the one in Colorado cast a wider net, granting the class certification the plaintiffs sought. It means the ruling applies to all Division I players who started their college careers in the 2022-23 season, not just a select list.

Sounds logical. But why is everyone throwing around this number of $14 mil NIL budget we have this year?

drgnslayr

Reply to 2026 Transfer Portal Chaos/Madness Thread on Wed, 06 May 2026 19:24:35 GMT

@<bdi>drgnslayr</bdi> that’s a good observation about the 2 buckets of NIL: private and RevShare. KU uses about 1/3 of its RevShare budget for basketball, which is about as large as you’ll find. Each school has a hard RevShare cap of like $21.3m in the 26-27 year. So we’ll spend probably a bit over $7m on basketball RevShare. Football takes the lion’s share just because of roster numbers. Other sports take whatever is left.

Private NIL (I’ve also seen it referred to as “pure NIL” since it’s ostensibly for actual NIL use) is unlimited but (allegedly) each deal has to be cleared with the NILGo clearinghouse run by Deloitte. Schools that are spending insane amounts are basically daring Deloitte and the NCAA to void these deals since they’re clearly far above fair market value as they define it.

For big money rosters, you’ll see the latter outnumber the former by 3:1 or even 4:1. We compete fine in terms of RevShare but we don’t have the donor base to compete with the biggest spenders, especially given all the other expenses in the AD and revenue disadvantage from being in a second tier league.

It looks like their institutional direct-revenue sharing NIL for this campaign is $20.5 mil. I wonder what their total spending on NIL will be? Didn't we recently receive a huge donation directly to our AD from the Booth family? I'm reading that our rev share to basketball players is a little over $14 mil. I know we have the cost of the football stadium dampening our balance sheet but this could be Self's last year and it seems weird we don't show more appreciation.
