Tourism ideas for my wife and I in Lawrence
-
Restaurant options we like: Free State Brewery - lunch or dinner and the beer…good food, great atmosphere Papa Keno’s if NYstyle Pizza is your thing. It’s a must stop for me whenever in town (lunch, dinner) Wheatfields for breakfast…get their biscuits and gravy (depending on appetite get 1/2 or full order…you’ll probably be full either way) Buy a loaf of bread while there too to take home. Was featured on the Food Channel. Munchers bakery - must get Cream Cheese donuts (one of a kind and awesome) Have heard the only reason they weren’t patented is so the recipe wouldn’t be publicized. Buy a dozen and take home with you… Encore (new since we moved away) but have had great Chinese meals there every time & my wife is picky about that. Also, you and wife need to go use the bathrooms at the same time while there. Trust me…
-
I still enjoy visiting the Natural History Museum on campus. The Wheel or Louise’s West for pregame libations. Johnny’s for post-game reflection. Yellow Sub for either lunch or dinner is mandatory.
-
The roost on mass is my favorite breakfast place, formally Milton’s. My boys love terrabonne and the shrimp po boy sandwiches, I like the club. So many places, you can’t go wrong!
-
@Crimsonorblue22 We used to like Milton’s too. Just noticed it was gone over Thanksgiving. Is the new place similar?
-
@Bwag almost exactly. Do you live there? Milton’s is by the summit, or in it, last time I was there at least. I prefer the roost now.
-
UC Irvine bb team just left free state brewery…
-
@DanR let’s hear your ideas, you live there, right? So, is that one big dude?
-
@Crimsonorblue22 we moved about 3 1/2 hours away, but get up there couple times a year at this point.
-
Louise’s west and yellow sub CLASSICS!!!
We also frequented Louise’s downtown, the Bottleneck for live music and Quinton’s on Mass St for lunch/dinner (1/2 TAC sandwich and Wisconsin Cheddar soup in bread bowl.).
-
@Crimsonorblue22 I’m sorry - I meant Legends, the whole ginormous shopping center right there at I-70 and I-435, where Hollywood Casino and the Racetrack, Great Wolf Lodge and all that is.
-
@VailHawk Yellow Sub a definite winner. Fresh backed bread! Green Turkey, Yum!
-
@nuleafjhawk yeah, great place! I think my boys will be spending gift cards there thurs! I like to eat at the yard house! Son said good draft beer selection.
-
@Bwag green turkey?
-
Don’t forget to visit Naismith’s grave.
-
Go to the Sandbar (just off of Mass st.) if you want to see people dancing on tables (literally) before noon.
-
@kansas-oats The Yellow Sub is no longer there
-
There is still a Yellow Sub a block east of the 23rd and Iowa intersection on the north side of the road. I do miss the eclectic and eccentric atmosphere of the original next to the Crossing. RIP.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 a turkey sub with avocado, sprouts and salsa in addition to some other normal ingredients.
-
@Bwag sounds good!
-
Is the crossing gone, too? I walked/biked past there every day! They had a small pool table that you could make the eight ball on the break pretty easily back in the day…
-
For sure, take the time to stroll down Mass. street. Great shops, especially for KU trinkets /Tshirts. Or the KU bookstore is great for that. For sure…get to AFH early. Last year, I arrived early enough that I was able to sit in the bleachers {not my seat} and watch the team do early warm up. Definitely take the time to go through Booth HOF.
-
@VailHawk When the Oread Hotel was built, the Crossing and original Yellow Sub buildings were razed unfortunately. The Crossing is the only bar I have ever been to where you could have a beer with a goat!
-
@kansas-oats Wait a minute. There was a goat there?? When? Lets see… I lived in Lawrence from 97 til about summer 02 I think, so around 5 years. I visited that Yellow Sub quite often. One of the best sub shops around. I really didnt go into the Crossing too often. Maybe once or twice. I certainly would have remembered a goat! Well, at least I think I would have remembered. Good times. Probly forgot most of them. LOL
-
@kansas-oats I had some friends from Arkansas - they had goats for waitresses…
-
@nuleafjhawk I love it…THANK YOU!
-
@Lulufulu I moved to Lawrence in 1982 and left in 1991. The early to mid-eighties were very tolerant and still hippyish times in Lawrence. Of course it helped that the drinking age was 18. Quite an eye opening experience for a young man from a much smaller community and I enjoyed every second! The hill on home football game days was one huge party and so much fun. My group of friends brought a keg to every game.
-
@Lulufulu We probably shared a beer, given your timeline and mine are identical. I drank many (too many?)a pitcher on $5 pitcher day at the crossing.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 They put the BB team in the back room at freestate We were waiting for a table at the bar when the team left… they had to walk through that little tunnel past the bathrooms. The big dude, Mamadou, is big. I’ve seen a lot of jayhawks around town (Withey, Pollard, Simien, Manning etc) and that Irvine guy was the first person I’ve ever thought seemed freakishly tall in person. The Greek guy was pretty big too.
Hopefully they all had the buttermilk chicken dinner special. Didn’t agree with my wife.
-
@DanR oh no!
-
@Jayrawks1 Jefferson’s on Mass is a good place to eat if you’re looking for some food after the game.
-
@HawkInMizery and fun!
-
@Crimsonorblue22 indeed it is my friend! Glad to see they bounced back.
-
Used to like the Yacht Club, even though the service was horrible. Often ran into players there.
But I heard it closed.
-
For lush effect… we always went to El Mezcal on Iowa. Big, cheap pitchers of margheritas and mexican food.
I’m not sure they are still open.
Anyone know?
-
@drgnslayr 2 el mez places closed, one on 23rd still open. My favorite!
-
Thanks! I thought the one on Iowa was gone. I know they were caught several times serving minors, but don’t know if that is the reason this location closed.
-
@Jayrawks1 So, where did you eat and where did you go? How would you rate it?
-
Yes! Can’t wait to hear about your day in Lawrence.
-
@dylans Nice!
