SAN DIEGO AZTECS - TUESDAY NIGHT 10P.M. CBS

-
@wrwlumpy Lumpy, I join you in high praise of Salk and his discovery. Spent a month in basement polio ward of old KC General Hsptl summer 1949. Eight years old, and my parents could visit infrequently only from outside hospital’s screened basement window. Probably the basis for my cherishing lifetime moments of intermittent solitary pursuits: running, pedaling, reading, fishing, working in remote Ozark woods. I was mighty fortunate to have survived lasting effects of that malady before Salk rescued probably millions of people from crippling misfortune.
-
I went to Mecical Corp Scool at Balboa Naval Hospital. It was a short walk from there to Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo. Joan Embry who was on the Tonight show many, many times made it a destination for me to meet pretty girls while a Polar Bear would salute anyone in a Navy uniform. The Coronado bridge had not yet been fully built and the first person to cross it was a pregnant lady in a police car who had the baby on the bridge. Many evenings were spent walking around Plaza downtown where preachers would stand on soap boxes while women in bikini’s sold Bibles next to tattoo parlors. Being eighteen and headed for Vietnam was made all the more difficult by pondering leaving one of the most beautiful cities in the country.

@wrwlumpy This will be a big boy game for us. SD is a perennial NCAA team, for the most part, and it will be a true away game for us. We can beat them. Our boys just have to lock down and be tough like they were in the WUGs. They can win this game. I think it will be close but they can win it. It should be a good test.
-
@wrwlumpy " Where all da white women at?"
-
I hope for a Kansas win on the 22nd. But I don’t like the time of the game and it’s location. Oh don’t get me wrong SD is beautiful. But a game 3 days before Christmas at 10 pm our time. SD will be playing or should I say trying to be the Scrooge to my Holiday. We better win the game.
-
@Duanep5ku kids will adjust to time, Dg will not sleep in for this one!! Probably be harder for some fans than kids. I think they will be ready, no repeat of last year. Isn’t this the tallest team?
-
@wrwlumpy Thank you for your service, sir! My wife served in the USAF during '91. I decided to pass on an opportunity at the Academy in Colo Springs, choosing KU professional school. We have been to Hotel Del in Coronado twice since '00 and have loved it, SDiego, and LaJolla in particular.
-
I notice a “name” that KU faithful were tossing around quite a bit during his recruiting: Angelo Chol. I see from his stats as a SENIOR, that he has amounted to very little. 4ppg, 4rpg, 50-60%FT. And this was some ranked kid? Methinks no-namer Kevin Young would kick his azz…and we’ll see Ellis and Traylor (both 6’8.) work this guy. Ellis and Traylor had the guts to play for Bill Self. I respect that. Even over homesickness…(waaah!!)
-
I love the Del Coronado…it is claimed that there are ghost there…
-
I would not count the win against California as a big win, they were grossly over-ranked at the start of the season based on potential and they have not come close to living up to it.
-
That’s what 5-star freshman do to people’s heads. They take a mediocre team a year ago and surprisingly make them 100 times better overnight. Cal is better this year but they way they were ranked early was just for TV.
Chol has done nothing since bouncing from Arizona to SDSU… It’s a case where we are fortunate to have missed on him. He didn’t develop as some scouts had predicted he could.
the next game against UC Irvine is what your thinking of. SDSU just has a bunch of 6-7 to 6’9 types
-
@KansasComet Oh my, Raquel. And today in her mid 70’s she’s still got it.
With my head back on straight, thanks to a Navy dad lived in SD twice. Once in Ocean Beach (blah) and once in Pacific Beach (YOWZA). In PB we were 2 blocks from the water and about 1/2 mile south of La Jolla. Beautiful girls, beautiful weather, beautiful girls, beautiful beach, beautiful girls…
-
@brooksmd To me, Raquel is to women as Wilt is to basketball players.
-
-
@brooksmd HUBBA HUBBA …
-
@brooksmd Yes indeed!!
-
@nuleafjhawk Well said!
-
Chol is a reason that lower ranked guys are a bit scary. He was ranked in the 50s or 60s and just never did develop and pan out. He was thought of as a fast rising candidate, but looking back at his game, he wasn’t super skilled or explosive as an athlete.
There’s even a funny moment I saw in one of his HS highlight videos. Towards the end of his highlights Chol makes a move from the corner to the middle of the lane. He dunks, but its clear that the play was whistled dead, and you can see the official on the baseline signal that he traveled. If ever there was a bit of foreboding in a highlight, that is it.
-
Just off the plane in San Diego.
-
-
I think SDS was looking ahead to the KU game. Grand Canyon is this year’s Incarnate Word.
-
@wrwlumpy - Just wanted to say that your pregame threads are excellent. Always an education. Thanks for taking the time to do this.
And SDSU losing to Grand Canyon. Wow. Grand Canyon got beat by Louisville by 45 points.
-
Merry Christmas everyone!
-
@Gunman same to you and your family!
-
Don’t let the score of the Louisville game fool you, Grand Canyon is a pretty decent team. Keep in mind that the Louisville game was at Louisville right after they let the game against Michigan State slip away and were looking for blood…remember that after losing to MSU, KU beat Chaminade by 51 points. GC is 10-2 and the only other loss was to Nebraska-Omaha in OT and their record includes a win over Houston and just about all their wins have been by double digits. Not a great team but definitely not as bad as the Louisville score would appear to indicate.
-
@JayHawkFanToo Dan majerle coach GC? I use to “like” him!
-
Yes, he coaches GC …he was really good and smart player in the NBA.
-
@JayHawkFanToo saw him play in Phoenix!
-
Me, too.
-
@drgnslayr you ️ him too? Jk
-
Ha… I liked him a lot as a player on that old Suns team. He hasn’t quite made my “man love” list yet.
-
@drgnslayr I haven’t seen a pic of him for awhile, he might have gotten old, but you know, I haven’t!
-
"Hotel del Coronado (also known as The Del and Hotel Del) is a historic beachfront hotel in the city of Coronado, just across the San Diego Bay from San Diego, California. It is one of the few surviving examples of an American architectural genre: the wooden Victorian beach resort. It is the second largest wooden structure in the United States (after the Tillamook Air Museum in Tillamook, Oregon) and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977[3][5] and a California Historical Landmark in 1970.[4]
When it opened in 1888, it was the largest resort hotel in the world. It has hosted presidents, royalty, and celebrities through the years.[6] The hotel has been featured in numerous movies and books."

Women went nuts for Dan back in his playing days. He is still a good looking man.
-
Am I the only old fart that is probably going to conk out by about 9:30 and miss the whole game??
-
@nuleafjhawk yes! Take a nap earlier! U r not that old!
-
@wrwlumpy Once again, great job on the photos and info. Didn’t know that Ann Wilson of Heart was born in San Diego…the folks around here make a big deal out of her being “Seattle’s own.” Turns out she was a military brat whose folks moved up here during her HS years. Heart started out a Led Zeppelin cover band and were just breaking out nationally around the time I got out of KU.
Speaking of KU, don’t know if it was mentioned on this thread, but SD was Wilt’s last career stop, as player/coach of the San Diego Conquistadors of the ABA.
-
Danny played for the San Diego Clippers with Larry Brown in 1989. In the same arena I saw Hendrix with Iron Butterfly, the local hero’s. After Hendrix the audience was invited to stay and see the premier of the Movie “MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR.” A long, loud, wonderful evening. The Hendrix recording of “Red House” was recorded at that concert.
-
@wrwlumpy Sounds like one amazing night. I was a big Butterfly fan, partly because of the organ licks. My Mom was organist at our church, and these guys made the organ sound cool again after having to listen to years of hymns. (Later I picked up on Jimmy Smith, who knocked it out of the park.)
-
I saw Jimmy Smith at a club and restaurant located in the Union Station in 1972. I had all of his albums.
-
@wrwlumpy Other than “Got My Mojo Workin’,” I didn’t really get into Jimmy until I took Dick Wright’s History of Jazz class at KU. Dick was the general Manager at KANU (now KPR) and had a basement library of over 10,000 albums, mostly jazz & classical.
-
Aaarrgggh!
Iowa State pulls one out against Cincy with (what else?) a late 3. Bearcats missed three game-winning shots at the end.
Oh well, I guess at least it helps our strength of schedule.
-
Does anyone know a way to watch the game if you don’t have a package that carries CBS college sports?
-
WARNING TO KUBUCKETS PARTICIPANTS:
Drgnslayr has an itchy finger and can’t stop pushing all the “like” buttons!
You guys post so much amazing stuff… both basketball and non-basketball.
-
@JhawkAlum @Crimsonorblue22 posted a link on the CBS thread.
-
@JhawkAlum I used to use First Row Sports, but it’s a pain in the butt because you have to get rid of all the pop-up windows to watch a game.
-
@nwhawkfan @JhawkAlum Somebody posted the steps for using first row but damn if I can find the thread or post now. It was very detailed.
-
@nwhawkfan honestly feel a little bad for Iowa St this year. Liked their team a little when Hoiberg was there (and 0ther than a few douchebag nutjob fans, their student body is alright with me). I’m going to relish tearing their 7 man rotation apart this year. But, non-conference, go Clones.
Only Big XII team I root against out of conference these days is Kansas State. Even Ford and Drew have grown on me.
