@Jesse-Newell What adjustments has Self made or is anticipating making in regards to all of the rules changes this year (beyond what we saw at WUG with a shorter shot clock)?
-
@Jesse-Newell Excellent … thanks for posting.
Possible questions for Self:
- Who is the presumptive starter at the 2 – Graham or Svi.? If the season were to start today.
- Is Selden cemented as the 3.? Meaning, that’s his spot.
- If you were to rank Mickelson, Lucas, and Traylor as far as minutes now, who would get the most, who would get the least?
- If Diallo is not eligible to play, who is the odds on favorite to start the most games next to Ellis in the post?
- Did you make any tweaks or changes to your offensive system from last season? Any hints on what those might be?
- You said that you “learned a lot” from your experience at the WUG offensively, What exactly did you learn?
- Can you explain why Traylor’s rebound rates are so incredibly low (meaning, as far a post players getting regular minutes, his is the worst rebounding rate aside from Justin Wesley since Self has been at Kansas).
-
How much money do fans need to raise in order to end the Jayhawk network?
Will Tyler Self be red shirted?
Thoughts on new apartments.
-
@Jesse-Newell I guess another one is does he think we’re close to closing with any of the Late Night invitees or should we hunker down until after the post season in terms of getting recruiting news (I know he can’t talk about specific recruits until they’ve signed).

Enough that if that if that kind of money was raised, it should be directed to football to help fund renovations for the stadium and give Beaty as much chance as possible to succeed so KU doesn’t get relegated to the American Conference when the Big 12 dies out in a few years.
-
@clevelandjayhawk or at the very least end the black out of espn 3.

Also ask couch Self if he believes in analytics such as Moneyball or if he is a believer in real life team chemistry?
I would like to know his answers on this for the fact that there are a few people that question why he plays certain guys over others and the numbers don’t match up.
What is more important to him. Chemistry and flow or analytics and numbers?
Again thanks Jesse
-
Great suggestions, guys.
This one will be addressed tomorrow too, but CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein had today that Self said Greene was 80 percent and hoped he would be cleared to practice Friday.
@JRyman said:
@Jesse-Newell in sure it will get brought up but what about B. Green and his recovery and time table for return or if he will take a medical red shirt?
Thanks

What would we say WUG ball is? Selden at the 3 was probably the biggest difference, I’m guessing.
Love the avatar, by the way. Perhaps the greatest iPhone photo I have ever taken!

@Jesse-Newell Is Self still interested in continuing WUG ball during the season?

I hate to beat a dead horse…
But I do have the golden question… I mean… the fools golden question!
Even if Cheick gains his eligibility, there will still be a question on whether or not we can effectively score in the low post.
Will we be running our typical hi-lo offense again? (regardless of the status of Diallo)
Will he be critical of our ability to maintain a high % from trey this year? Will it always be “fools gold?”
At crunch time do we go totally towards an emphasis on low post scoring? Even when it isn’t working?
And then other questions…
Will you be trying Wayne at the 3? Or… have you committed him to the 3 so we’ll watch him all year learn his new position?
Is Svi really as improved as some say? Should we expect him to earn a lot of PT this year, and if so, will it be at the 2 or 3?
I hear you on the 3-point questions. Though sometimes I feel like this when I bring it up …
Selden at the 3 is intriguing to me as well. He still will have to be the backup 2, correct? If not, who is? Svi? Definitely not Greene, which leaves his minutes in doubt if Selden is all 3 this year.

I asked him No. 6 a few weeks ago. He was pretty vague will going back to the “giving players more freedom offensively” answer. I thought his previous comment about “learning a lot” was interesting too.
For No. 1, I can almost guarantee (if healthy) that it’s Graham. The coaches love him and want two ballhandlers out there together as much as possible.

@Jesse-Newell What is WUG ball? Selden 3, Hunter over Traylor and Lucas, fast offense, freedom to take the 3 right away if it’s there. Opportunism.
-
@Jesse-Newell You said: “Selden at the 3 is intriguing to me as well. He still will have to be the backup 2, correct? If not, who is? Svi? Definitely not Greene, which leaves his minutes in doubt if Selden is all 3 this year.”
I think Svi will swing 2 - 3, backing up Graham/Mason, and Selden. So he’d give Graham and Mason relief, with the other playing the point. And then spelling Selden some too
But your point on Greene is exactly on point. I’ve mentioned how I still think Greene is the 5th perimeter guy. That means fighting for minutes. Some here have speculated that a redshirt would be well placed for Greene. I don’t know. I have thought that given lack of fit (his game being the three ball, and Self’s lack of full appreciation for that part of the game) and lack of possible minutes, that a transfer made sense. But that’s not happening.
Will be interesting to see how it plays out.
On Graham, there was a great quote from Townsend in June that the staff preferred Mason and Graham together. Svi can get a bunch of minutes whether he starts, or is first perimeter guy off the bench.

Prior to the Germany game, it was a lot more free flowing and up tempo with KU actually taking advantage their athletic superiority instead of running set plays at Big 10 tempo giving less talented teams a chance to hang around.

Yes… and in my opinion, Selden at 3 was second to the fast offense which was catalyzed by 1) the shorter shot clock, 2) the rule to reset the clock to 15 seconds after rebounds and 3) the limits on timeouts which kept the game going. (No TV timeouts, etc.)
The NCAA games will have a slightly shorter clock, but that’s about it. I’m really curious what Coach Self learned from the WUG that he thinks he can apply to the game this year.

Jesse, what an interesting write up. It is amazing that one simple play when a lot of the audience has not even settled in their seats can give you a bigger edge than the house has in Vegas for most games. Very nicely done.
-
@Jesse-Newell and @JayHawkFanToo
I now intend to wait to bet until I see who wins the tip.
-
Here is my requested question.
How much does KUBuckets.com discourse influence Coach Self’s thinking regarding playing inside out versus playing outside in?
-
Why wait? Bet KU to win and you will win about 82% of the time. Doesn’t get any better than that.
-
Still more questions for Coach Self.
How often does he run a set play after a time out recommended by Cindy?
When he retires and doesn’t have to recruit anymore, will he finally tell us the low down on whether he has plugs, or a rug?
Which infuriates him more: missing a trey he did not want taken, or missing a defensive assignment?
Does he intend to testify as a character witness for the Morri?
Has he ever worn orange underwear under his suit to coach a KU game in order to invoke the ghost of Hank Iba in his favor?
Who was better: Iba, or Allen?
in his younger days, could he drink Coach Sutton under the table, or vice versa?
Has he ever envied Kurtis Townsend’s sartorial splender?
Did he hire Jerrance to make himself look slimmer?
Did Joe Dooley’s ears ever block his view during games?
Did he have to wear special polarized contact lenses to avoid the glare from Danny’s head while prowling the sidelines while Danny was still an assistant coach?
Is it true that he bought Sherron his first Big Mac?
Will Tyler be ready to take over the head coach role when he graduates?
Did LaGerald Vick decide to go to KU instead of SMU, because he knew inside scoop about the NCAA penalizing SMU and Coach Brown?
Will Janks come back to assist Self, or will he stay at SMU and ride out the penalties?
Have Coach Self and Cindy ever gone skinny dipping in Potters Lake in the middle of the night?
Has KU ever practiced inside The Flamingo?
Would Self ever follow Bruce Weber?
Does Coach Self think he could have won the national championship with Nike-UK’s Long Stack last season?
Does Coach Self have a kind of quantitative dyslexia that makes him call 6-6 players 6-8 players?
Who does Coach Self think was the more inept head football coach: Turner Gill, or Charlie Weis?
How old was Coach Self when he learned that Oklahoma is considered to have a sub tropical climate?
Has Coach Self ever gotten tired of being 50 steps ahead of fans on everything?
Are the rare lapses in his bench coaching caused by being distracted by Olivia Wilde?
Has Jerrance Howard ever eaten a low cal snack?
Do Coach Self, Norm Roberts and Billy Gillispie ever get together for pops anymore?
Who was best: Don Haskins, Eddie Sutton, or Jack Hartman?
Which Big 12 team outside KU has the best looking Cheerleaders?
That about covers it.

@jaybate-1.0 The places you let your mind go to…wow! Good post! Thanks.

@KansasComet Thx, Comet. Isn’t it great another season is rolling round?!

This question is for Jesse -
Will you promise to visit us often this year? We always appreciate your input and I feel like most of us do a pretty good job of following your work on other websites.
-
Am I missing something? I don’t see an article by @Jesse-Newell today…
-
All completely relevant and demand answers!!!
-
I’d like to see a spot on question asked about the influence of ShoeCos. It should be a question designed by the master crime investigator… @jaybate-1.0 .
I’m not expecting an informative reply… but would enjoy hearing Self posed with the question.
-
I appreciate your spirit, but I must take a moment and reiterate something I write from time to time. I hypothesize about what I assume to be legal activities and leave the illegal stuff to the authorities, so I am not a crime fighter in any real sense of those words–just a fan trying to understand how things work.
Rock Chalk!!!

A question for Coach Self regarding ShoeCo influence would be:
Coach Self, how would you rank in order from most to least the influence on recruiting: a.) ShoeCos; b.) agents and their agent runners, and c.) AAU coaches?
