@HoraceZontal for sure, if he plays major minutes in the tournament it could very well be worth it. I think Self is just tired of dealing with it personally. Hes been questioned about DPs status everyday since November. I’m sure it’s wearing on him.

@approxinfinity Agreed. SAS just saw an opportunity to rip a player and get more attention

          @JoJoAndMe said in Darryn Peterson:

Let me make a prediction. This will be Bill's last season, and I think DP will have been the catalyst.
I have stated before that I admired Bill's willingness to continue coaching during the new NIL / Portal era when most of his contemporaries retired. So much has changed. Notice how Elmarko and Jamari have improved. That's what Bill's always been good at. Player development. i.e. Travis Releford who took a redshirt after his soph season. Unheard of, but it gave him a chance to develop into a very good college player. SO few players today stay long enough to be developed. Now, Bill has the DP drama to manage. And, to his credit, he's managed it amazingly well. BUT . . . as much as he wants another national championship (and with it a statue in front of AFH), I think Bill will conclude that he's made more money than he can ever spend, has grandkids, and needs to take care of his health. I think this will be it. Great run. (But who's next??)

As much as the DP situation frustrates Self, I think coaching Melvin does the opposite. I feel like the chances this is his last season are <5% unless his heart condition is bothering him more than he lets on or he continues to have new scares there.

@MR11 I think Self retires with in the next 3 seasons. Only way I see him going this year is if they win the natty. I think he really enjoys coaching Flory and Council, obviously it’s a slim chance Council gets another season but I just read this morning a Montana football player was given a waiver to play his 9th, yes 9th CFB season.

There’s at least one bright side to DPs issues, the emergence of ElMarko Jackson. He’s gone from looking almost unplayable at the start of the season to be a fantastic sixth man. He’d be starting for most teams, i think. Consider the numbers from OK state game. DP scores 23, Jackson subs for him and adds 14 more, 37 points out of the scoring guard position. Also with Jackson you get a guy who’s likely a better defender than DP, and maybe a better assist guy. Good to know that if DP can only go 20 minutes, we got a guy off the bench who can give us another solid 20. And Mario can have a great game here and there, but he seems to streaky to be as reliable as Jackson.

If you want to talk about drama it's the holding out until after or during the McDonald's All Star Game to bless a basketball team with your presence. I guess that's the reality of it all. I just think do it already it's will be forgotten in a few days anyway.

@HoraceZontal If your an NBA GM how can you not be leery about DP. Stevan A was only speaking the truth and yet by far not the only one of the who's who in pretty much saying the same things.

I heard another round table and possible theory is that DP id just playing cautiously during the regular Season and once it gets to Tourney time it'd GAME ON & you will see a full game through out the tourney & Poof cramps- -gone-- -- Ham String issue gone- any flu issues- --gone any medical issue no where to be found

I just watched Self press conference today and he took pretty much our stance on this, one way to stop all the negative news outta the mainstream media…play the game.

When I put my cynical hat on, I can see a scenario where the prediction markets have bets on DP. Will he play? Over / Under on 18 minutes. Etc.

That's an additional revenue stream for the handlers who actually know how to manage the outcome.

All of this media attention is actually helpful for something like that.

@bskeet You're saying that the handlers know how much he's going to play and use it to betting advantage? Kansas better be in the know about that 'cause that WOULD cause embarrassment and loss of victories.

He certainly has a good chunk of college BB following his story right now

                              Here’s my take:
DP situation, while frustrating, is a microcosm of the state of NIL right now. He got all his $ up front, basically, and he’s got 2 $10M lottery tickets to cash in if he can make it through the season un-injured. Can you really blame him for being overly cautious? We criticize him based on our wants, without having an inkling of the consequences that only he faces if he injures himself and can’t cash in. I think because of this season with DP, you’re going to see a major change in how NIL payments are handled. Schools and boosters will protect themselves going forward. Ironically, I think we’ll look back at this and secretly thank DP for pushing this glaring issue into the spotlight. Got to break some eggs to make an omelette… For anyone out there saying they wouldn’t take DP first in the draft: do so at your own peril. If you are the GM that passes on DP, you are potentially going to wear that f-up for the rest of your career. He’s too damn good not to take the risk on. Simple as that.

I wonder what he actually wants.. I get a feeling his team has been handling him for so long, He has no idea what he himself may want.

I'm suggesting that his playing time is highly irregular. And there's a lot of speculation about it.

I would not think that Kansas knows about it because it seems to be catching the team by surprise. But if this isn't just random injuries, then there is opportunity for someone to be using it.

Again, this is just where dark thoughts could lead someone. I don't think that's going on, but it would be bad for everyone if it was. And the sports world is awash in gambling now more than ever.
