Early Hearings TM

  • Apparently TCU lost to Alabama, 85-81 in a (shh- secret) scrimmage. The interesting part is that Udeh played 20 minutes getting 2 pts (1 of 3) and 2 fouls, 4 rebounds.

  • Nick’s confidence is shattered right now. Hopefully Self builds him back up.

  • @BShark Self doesn’t have time to play mind games with senior transfers this season especially…he’d be an idiot if he did that.

He had some good looks last night just didn’t knock them down. Needs to get lower on D.

He can contribute - why is his confidence that shattered already?

Was told he is “thinking too much” and “isn’t used to Self’s style of coaching”. Something to monitor.

I can see scenarios where Furphy gets more minutes. That said I do hope he snaps out of it enough to at least be a bench shooter. Between Elmarko/Furphy/Timberlake ideally we have one guy that is a KU level starter and the other two don’t kill us off the bench. I think something along those lines is required for this team to be as good as we are hoping for. Right now Furphy could even be the starter. I think it will continue to be Elmarko but he has a lot to learn at this level.

Not sure it is really mind games so much as just the way Coach Self is. When he is in coach mode on the court whether during a game or during practice, he is hyper vigilant, hyper aware, and hyper critical. We’ve all seen it with the quick hook, and if you’ve listened to any past players talk about practice, they all sound the same. The ones that love him can laugh about how harsh he can be, how he will criticize every piece of your game and who you are but then as soon as practice is over, be the fun loving charismatic guy we see on TV or if you’re lucky enough to have met him in person.

That works for some guys. And in the end is beneficial because they learn to separate basketball from their identity and realize it’s a game that some of them can continue to make money in as a job and others will just have to let go. Some people take criticism as a challenge, and will try to prove the criticizer wrong. Others take it to heart and think that means they aren’t good enough to compete. We’ve heard talk of “the toughening box” for certain players and I used to believe that, but after listening to Mitch and Landen interview other former Jayhawks I think the toughening box is really more about the personality of the player than Self focusing on a guy. He has an idea for what he wants out of every player and is going to pick apart every aspect of their game so they know how to give him what he wants. That’s just my take from never having watched a practice but just listening to the podcasts these former players are hosting these days.

    Furphy time!

  • Yeah I wasn’t excited at all about Timberlake since he’s a one dimensional guy at this level but hey, everyone wanted shooters seemingly at the expense of everything else so Bill must’ve opened the suggestion box outside Allen

  • I think Furphy will be fine i some time. fighting shin splints is no joke. - I think maybe the biggest thing for him might be just getting in the training /weight room filling out some.

  • I will not gas up Zach Clemence I will not gas up Zach Clemence I will not gas up Zach Clemence I will not gas up Zach Clemence I will not gas up Zach Clemence I will not gas up Zach Clemence.

  • @BShark

Same. Still hopeful he is what I thought he was out of high school. Still shocked he’s coming back. Must have improved enough to change minds

  • @BeddieKU23 Supposedly he’s locked in. Sources that were honest about him before said they have never seen him so motivated. Hopefully it holds, he’s always had talent.

  • @BShark

Finally got that chip on his shoulder he didn’t have at Sunrise etc. These are dangerous kinds of players. I’ll remain out of the rabbit hole until we see it live but man I think he’s someone that may help this team win games.

  • Early chatter on Zeke is quite positive. LOCKED IN.

  • @BShark I really liked listening to him talk on the lightfoot, tehan podcast. He seems like he is really motivated to come in and make a difference yet, humble enough to take on whatever role the team needs. Thought it was funny he said he didn’t even really consider NIL when choosing Kansas. I actually believe him. He was like, yeah I’ll take the money, but that’s not WHY I’m coming to KU.

  • @BShark Zeke is a mature dude on and off the court. He should push for pg1……

  • Flory is turning some heads already. EXPLOSIVE.

  • @BShark Good news, yay!

  • @BShark

Just hope he can add some good weight/strength to him so he can be relied upon to spell Hunter. His athleticism and absurd length will help him overcome some things.

  • Sounds like no scrimmage at camp today due to the injury last night to Elmarko.

@BeddieKU23 I feel good that he can at least be more serviceable than Parker.

  • @BShark

Agreed, major upgrade in my opinion

  • @BShark That’s great but will he be able to play freely showcasing that athleticism or will he be looking over his shoulder or thinking too much

  • Self knows what he has and he will develop him. Don’t worry about it.

  • @Crimsonorblue22 Cheick, Cliff et al do say otherwise.

Short leash with freshman and tough system to grasp….

If he’s this electric he needs to get minutes early to build

  • @BeddieKU23 said in Early Hearings TM:

Speaking of upgrades, I got a whole wheel of Cabot arriving tomorrow. Going to be a good day.

  • Cliff got minutes. Diallo couldn’t get it! Needed more time. Flory’s more like Embiid, but Flory has said he knows he may need more than 1 or 2 yrs. He respects coach, he’ll be great.

  • Flory is nothing like Embiid.

  • @kuballin10 Minutes over Hunter?

  • Flory is much more grounded than Cheick. He was a one and done from the second he committed and never really unpacked his bags, so to speak.

  • @benshawks08 If Hunter can’t defend then yes, flory needs some serious 10 minutes or more on the floor.

  • Also should say Kease could force his way into the rotation.

If you can clamp, Bill will find a way to play you. Kease is going to go down as one of the nastiest defenders in the Self era if he stays healthy imo. He is also our best athlete in quite awhile.

He has a lot in front of him this year though so year 2 is what I look at for his “breakout”. In some recent seasons where we had no depth he could have easily been the 6th man.

There’s something to be said about a kid like him where all the reports are about how hard he works. It makes it so easy to root for a kid like that. And we’ll need his defensive ability going against guys like Edgecombe

  • @TYOHawk I don’t remember if this was shared here yet…

“In 8 years doing this, I’ve only seen one other guy come in here that plays defense at the level Rakease does. Davion Mitchell is the only other one.” -NBA Agent

  • Garrett on defense Och on offense

  • @BShark I’ve said watch out because of how efficient he was offensively but had no clue about his ability to defend.

Knew he was going to be a stud when we signed portal guys and rather than decommit and duck…he stuck it out and said “bring it on - let me prove I deserve time”.

  • Can almost hear Max Falkenstein yelling “Rakease Pass-a-more!”

  • Speaking of Garrett, I think he’s playing w/the hornets in summer ball. He’s had some breaks, needs to take advantage of them.

  • @approxinfinity absolute legend……he and Bob will never be replaced.

Hurley and Hanni are like the goofy wannabe’s that only got the job because of connections. Especially Hanni (who is a good guy - zero attack on his character)……there are 3-5 other announcers including Bob Davis’ son who should have gotten that gig

  • From Hanni’s Twitter. What an inspiring couple of days at the @NSMASportsMedia Awards Weekend in Greensboro.

It was quite a thrill to meet some of my broadcast heroes and exchange ideas with the other state winners as well.

I’ve often said Kevin Harlan is the ultimate humble superstar and that was once again on display as he received his national honor. @Buck had us all in stitches at several points throughout the night with his fantastic wit and @JeffPassan delivered perhaps the best tribute to his late father I’ve ever heard in a setting like that.

So many great highlights, so many motivating moments. I’m blessed beyond measure and so grateful for this honor, but the experience itself and the inspiration it sparked was by far the best part.

Thanks again to all my talented peers in Kansas for the chance to represent them this year and kudos to Dave Goren, Wes Durham and the rest of the NSMA team for a fabulous, first-class event.

  • I see how much prep work brian puts into Hawk Talk plus his broadcasts and his charity work. I know a lot of fans think he’s goofy, but I’ve talked to him a few times and look forward to how prepared he is and how well he respects the athletes, coaches and athletic people around the league, not just KU.

  • @Crimsonorblue22 I’ve met Brian and he’s great, I just don’t like his voice. I hate to be a negative Nancy on the matter because following up imo the greatest to ever do it in Bob Davis is hard.

Ugg the radio guys now are just unenjoyable to listen to and it’s been made more stark by following greatness. I used to prefer the radio call to the tv. Now I’d rather just catch the highlights later than listen to those two clowns.

That is incredibly encouraging to read man. If he locks in he could be a rafters guy. I truly believe that.

  • @Crimsonorblue22 He’s extremely kind and his charity work is A+….like I said. His actual voice and announcing is not my cup of tea nor a lot of peoples. He tries too hard and has a bunch of cheesy lines like he’s trying to be dickie V with every players name.

Bob and Max were the mountain top
