Chiefs season long game thread
-
Hey, for once I agree with Tang. The drum is dumb. The chant is stupid and the team name needs to change.
-
@DanR The argument I always hear is the team was named after a fire chief so it’s totally fine and not appropriation. But even if that is the case, the drum, the name of the stadium, the chant, and all other Native American references gotta go. If they want to rebrand the “chiefs” and make the whole thing fireman related, go for it. They can even keep the colors. But at this point it’s probably easier and best to start over. Probably not gonna happen as long as they are winning super bowls…
-
Take it to the politics board or another site. Not here, please.
-
@benshawks08 it’s interesting to me that the word “Chief” could be offensive to anyone. You’d have change the Kansas Chiefs mascot, police chiefs, fire chiefs and potentially CEOs, Etc. I have Native American family by marriage they all go to games and love the chiefs. I could see the chant being offensive to some forsure and they should consider cutting it out. Mostly it’s white folk that decide what’s offensive and what’s not. Which is just silly in my opinion. I have 17 employees underneath me at work. We are all a very close group, 3 of them are black one of them is a very close friend and everytime something pops up as racism on news or wherever. I ask them how they feel about it (I don’t not tolerate racism in the work place under any circumstances) It’s their feelings that should carry the weight. Usually they give me the answer “just another woke white person wanting attention”. This all I’ll say on the matter, just my opinion. You guys and gals are welcome to your own.
-
@kjayhawks similarly my opinion comes more from listening to others rather than deciding for myself. My perspective comes from having a partner who is native as well as my brother in law, nephew, and soon to come son. So yeah. It’s personal to me. And notice I said, fine keep the name of you want to attach to it to one of the many uses for the word in our current vernacular. My biggest issue is with those who try to argue that the current iteration of the chiefs is unconnected to native culture when it so clearly is.
To the leave politics off this board comment, how is this politics? Did I say politicians should pass a policy forcing the team to change the name? It’s funny when people say a topic that makes uncomfortable to talk about is just politics and therefore inappropriate to bring up in whatever context.
-
@benshawks08 Maybe you would be more responsive to a request to keep highly charged social controversies out of this part of the sports board. “Politics” really just is shorthand to include any topic about which people bitterly disagree. I am not making that request, but I wish the post about Tang had been in a separate thread.
-
My Cherokee friends wear Redskins hats because it has an Indian on it and they think it’s awesome- his full blooded grandad is buried in a redskin hat. That is a term I think most folks find offensive, but I can’t for the life of me figure out why Chief would bother anyone. Survivors guilt? Would rather whitewash history and get rid of all references to native Americans than face facts that they were massacred? It’s an opportunity to educate - there is a Native American history museum at arrowhead. The team gets the blessing of local tribes for warhorse and the drum.
There are almost zero references to native Americans in pop culture. Outside of sports there is very little reference to Native Americans in current culture - Yellowstone doesn’t exactly paint them in a good light - money grubbing, covetous, casino owners.
Change the name, remove the museum and let’s forget that those poor sad native Americans ever existed. It’s easier on white people that way - the ostrich approach.
-
@dylans so the only thing keeping native culture alive is rich white guys naming their sports teams? Or fans doing a chant or banging a drum? Sounds like Tang found out how much native culture still exists outside of those sports and was good enough to listen.
Reservation dogs is a great show. Prey, the most recent predator film, is awesome and there’s many many more.
Look. I’ve hated the chiefs for a long long time. So this is the last I’ll post on this thread. But many years ago I went to a Braves game with my partner and watched her experience their chant in person and that’s not an experience I’ll ever forget. So you know some natives think it’s fine, there are a lot that don’t. It’s funny to me how some feel this isn’t an appropriate conversation for a sports thread. Think hard about that. Maybe just maybe that says something about how appropriate the name is for a sports team in the first place.
I hope the chiefs win this weekend so y’all can get back to talking ball.
-
Can we lock this thread or move it to politics? It’s off the rails.
-
Hopefully Gorilla we can add some game discussion this weekend!
Chiefs v Chargers is a good matchup.
-
First im seeing this. Locking it. Lets move on here and over to politics for further discussion.
-
For the record i barely read this thread, have no pulse on it, and locking it was not an indictment on the volatility of the content, so much as suggesting that it had veered off topic and might be better suited elsewhere on the board.
-
Oh it kind of sucks that this is the “season long game thread” and I locked it. On second thought im unlocking it. Please consider separating out a thread where appropriate.
-
So record predictions for the team this year?
-
Go Chiefs! Thx @approxinfinity for keeping our game thread active.
-
Finally CBS switched to the Chiefs!
-
Come on secondary!
-
Come on D linemen and linebackers, too!
-
Mahomes with a pick. Couldn’t follow thru. Was that the first pass to Mecole?
The way things were going before the pick, I was thinking the D will need to at least once keep ‘em from scoring.
Now maybe twice.
-
Hmm, Rice is a good YACer.
-
Dang Kelce, death grip! D much better!
-
@rockchalkjayhawk ?? YACer. Didn’t see mecole go in.

Ha. YAC=yards after catch.
I’m getting excited about Rice’s potential. Seems to have a spark.

️
-
I like Justin Reid
-
I ️ the Chiefs! I’m becoming a Swiftie🥰 fan. I don’t listen to her music, but I love her bf! He’s playing great!
-
Good team win today. D really stepped up huge in the 2nd half.
-
@rockchalkjayhawk Kelce counted as TE, Rice has become WR1 which is extraordinary for a rookie in this offense.
-
How about a big shoutout to Butker, he has been really solid.
-
I get a feeling that Chiefs vs Dolphins in Germany will become a key factor in AFC #1 seeding.
-
MVS saying the receivers stepped up this game and put up 31 points. Umm the receivers had 13 receptions for 178 yards. Kelce had 12 receptions for 179. Kelce is the man!
-
Bolton out for 2 months. Needs surgery on the dislocated wrist. Boo! hiss!
-
oh man. that sucks. he’s great.
-
@rockchalkjayhawk I wish we could re-name this team. It’s offensive and degrading.
Charger is the name of a horse trained for battle. As in the calvary. Do we really need to glorify these angry, war hungry, bloodthirsty animals by slapping their name across a football jersey? Of course, a charger could also be a plate. Don’t even get me started on how we’ve abused plates over the centuries…
Lighten up people.
-
Justyn Ross arrested on felony criminal damage charge over $25,000. No details I could find but I can’t see the KC Star any more. This stuff seems to follow our teams around lately…
-
Unfortunately most of these young men have not had good role models.
-
Even worse, sounds like a domestic violence situation.
-
From a comment to the article in The Athletic:
The headline is wrong. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office booking report states that he was arrested by the Shawnee Police Department on a charge of criminal damage to property of more than $1000 but less than $25,000. (Someone did not know how to read the > and < symbols.)
-
@mayjay This hurts although Chiefs are deep at LB and Tranquill played well in his absence. He will have to shoulder the responsibility.
-

Another source says the statute cited deals with damage to an ATM or similar “dispensing” equipment.
-
-
New court documents released Tuesday show he’s being charged with domestic battery and criminal damage.
Both charges are misdemeanors. The first report was that Ross was arrested and could face felony charges. The original police records also say his criminal damage amounted to over $1,000 and under $25,000. That has been adjusted to under $1,000 in criminal damage. Ross’ arraignment was previously set for 1:30 p.m. That was pushed back an hour to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

What’s a pattern?

Whatever happens in court, do the Chiefs part ways with him?
If so, anybody out there we can sign?

This Chiefs team could end up being historically good.
For those without twitter
Kansas City Chiefs are the first team to be top 5 in all three phases as of Week 7 since the 1999 Rams!
No 4 offense No 5 defense No 2 special teams
Others: 1984 Redskins, 1985 Bears, 1990 Giants, 1991 Redskins, 1996 Packers.
Every one of those teams except the 84 Redskins won the superbowl.
-
Looks like Justyn Ross is out for awhile. Basically suspended with pay on the exempt list.
-
I do not see this impacting Chiefs much if any at all.
On a brighter note, Watson is back practicing.
-
nope, me neither.
-
Ross was practicing today.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 I believe he can practice but not play in, or attend, games. The descriptions in various articles are all over the place. Since everything is still pending and he is still paid, that arrangement seems logical.
