Chiefs signings

I like what they have. Likely losing smith marsette hurts. But don’t forget about the true #1 target Kelce.
-
If Ross stays healthy, watch out for him.
I also want to see Smith Marsette in the roster.
Can Veatch pull a trade or two to get DL help by shipping DBs as Chiefs have solid depth.

Kelce. sure. i get it. He’s the top target. I’m sure there will be some guys let go who would come in handy.
-
Just to be totally clear…the Chiefs are in WIN NOW mode. So, help Mahomes out!
-
@rockchalkjayhawk I agree but without adequate D Chiefs are not winning anything. We have seen the movie in the past, they just cannot score on every drive, sooner or later you have to stop other teams from scoring.

The D is an entirely different matter…ha. Agreed.

From ESPN:
The Carolina Panthers acquired wide receiver Ihmir Smith-Marsette from the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for a swap of conditional 2025 seventh-rounders, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Smith-Marsette was originally drafted in the fifth-round in 2021 by the Minnesota Vikings. He has six career regular-season catches.
-
Bitter sweet moment.
I’d have liked to see him make the roster but it would have been difficult unless Chiefs carry 8 WRs.
At least Chiefs got a draft pick.
-
Chiefs WR room is deep when you consider they can get anything for their 8th best guy.
-
I didn’t realize ISM had a total of 6 catches since being drafted in '21. Lots of talent showed this preseason, but against 2nd/3rd string guys. Seems awfully fast, but Ross is likely faster. Will track him. Not sure Panthers are great for anyone…
-
To get something for a practice squad player is pretty cool. God job Veach. ISM would’ve made several of the chiefs rosters the last 6 years - wr room is deep with mid talent. No 1s, no real scrubs either.
-
@dylans Yes I concur. I mean MVS is WR1. With Mahomes and Reid I think this is the right strategy, several talented WRs except for 1 or 2 elite. They can spread ball around.
-
According to Adam Schefter, the Chiefs will send a sixth-round draft choice to Las Vegas for DT Neil Farrell who was drafted last year in 4th round.
This appears to be a good move to provide much needed boost to DL.
-
He is a big dude, 6’4" 330 lbs.
-
Buechele has been cut, I was hoping he would be kept. He will surely be picked by another team. I think Chiefs are serious about Wentz as longer term QB back up.
Also, Prince, who was highly touted during camp, has been cut.
-
Shane getting cut is a surprise, but he looked bad against the 1st string last preseason game (chiefs 2 vs browns 1s). Wentz must be gaining traction - with the new rule allowing a 3rd inactive qb to enter the game if the first two get hurt, I would be surprised if most teams don’t roster three qbs
-
Heard that both Prince and Perine are cut.
I was thinking Perine will make it, he looked in preseason games, better than CEH.
-
@AsadZ Wise got cut too. ️
-
@Crimsonorblue22 Yeah, was hoping he can prove his worth and stay. He may come back on practice squad
-
Doh! Reading this didn’t alleviate my concerns about our WRs!
- Questions at wide receiver Apart from Travis Kelce, there seems to be a dearth of established receiving options for Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid. The depth chart predominantly consists of young talents who hold the promise of maybe becoming standout players, including names like Skyy Moore, Rashee Rice, Justyn Ross, and Kadarius Toney. While these individuals undoubtedly possess serious skills, none have yet solidified their presence within the NFL. Additionally, veterans such as Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Justin Watson, and Richie James provide reliable depth, yet they don’t quite reach the tier of top-tier players. As long as Travis Kelce maintains his high-level performance, the urgency for a true number-one receiver is not significant, though his age does introduce a degree of concern. Granted, there’s a possibility that one or two of the young receivers might emerge as dependable assets, but the fact remains that no such breakthrough has occurred thus far. Should the worst-case scenario unfold, leaving Travis Kelce as the lone standout amidst a sea of uncertainties, the odds of a successful journey to and victory in Super Bowl LVIII would inevitably decrease.
-
@rockchalkjayhawk This is a concern but good news is that these WRs are talented. With Andy Reid and Mahomes I am confident that they will develop and perform as season progresses.
Other point to note is that opposing teams have to account for all WRs as ball can go to anyone when Kelce is not in the play.
-
Spreading the ball out is better than the Hill/kelce show was. They have to account for all of the receivers equally. No world beaters, but lots of solid players.
-
@dylans I agree I think you look at the losses to the Bengals and Bucs. They pretty said someone else is beating us besides them two. I’d rather have Kelce and 2-3 solid receivers to throw to. Sammy was good but wasnt healthy enough. Only superstar receiver I’d want in KC would be Justin Jefferson.
-
Buechele to Bills.
I was hoping he gets back to practice squad or go to NFC.
Listening to Veatch I got an impression that Chiefs think they can get better reserve QB elsewhere.
-
Yea, I think the Chiefs can do better than Buechele.
That’s an important roster spot. Need some experience and skill.
-
Ya know, when I wrote the above, I forgot the Chiefs kept Gabbert as backup QB. So, I’da be fine with him as third string. Learning from Mahomes isn’t a bad thing!
That being said, the Chiefs have had a few years to work with him, they must not have seen a great future. His last game was pretty ugly.
-
“Fellas, if ‘18’ goes down, we’re fked. And we don’t practice fked.”
- Tom Moore
Don’t sweat the backups.
-
87 went down!
And just like that the Chiefs’ WR crew becomes way more important…Kelce down with a reported hyperextended knee.
-
Sounds like he limped off the field - a positive sign. Early in the season and the wr are unproven, this will be a great opportunity for someone to earn Mahomes trust.
-
Ugh
-
Any news on how Ferrell is performing? I haven’t seen any news articles.
-
I haven’t either. I do not expect him to take much snaps if any against Lions
-
Kelce has a bone bruise.
Good news is that there is no structural damage.
Hopefully he does not miss more than 1-2 games.
-
All right, Bosa’s in da house, so let’s get our guy signed!
-
So, let’s see, what was i talking about? Oh, the need for an experienced, competent WR…
Anybody change their mind yet?
Oh, and if i were the Chiefs i would simply release Kadarius Toney immediately after the game. Maybe even before the game. Absolute embarrassment.
And can we please sign Leonard Fournette?
rant over. sorry.
-
@rockchalkjayhawk Toney has had 4 good plays in a Chiefs uniform. I’d cut him and Sky Moore, then trade Chris Jones for some that can catch a cold. That was an absolute embarrassment. Gimmicky run plays that haven’t worked in two years continue to be ran. I’m not a huge NFL fan but the chiefs don’t look like s playoff team personnel wise or coaching wise. I like Reid but he runs this into the ground in a few years just like Philly. I figured they wouldn’t stay at the top forever but that was just point at the TV and laugh bad.

I know it was the first game, with some missing studs and a new offensive coordinator. So, some issues could be expected.
That crazy, overthought run play we messed up was a bad call by Reid. And poorly executed for sure.
But Toney and his drops. Just wow. Others had some significant drops as well.
The defense was respectable mostly. We know we usually have to outscore opponents, so 20+ points wasn’t great against the Lions at home, but not impossible to overcome.
Just excited for the opening game, with a big let down.
-
Ehh. With Kelce actually making catches it’s a blow out. Hardly a reason to panic, but that’s the norm on chat rooms. - aaaah first series went poorly the season is over, fire the coaches, the gm stinks, the wr should be burned at the stake, etc.
- anyone remember how the patriots started 2019?- with an opening night loss to the chiefs. Remember how they finished - sb champs. Long season ahead and I’m looking forward to every moment Mahomes is on the field.
-
@dylans I remember how the Chiefs’ season ended that same season…with a boneheaded play on defense giving Tom Brady a chance to win in OT.
So, maybe since we started this season with a bunch of boneheaded plays perhaps we have gotten those out of the way.
-
Just read that Jones has signed one year deal with Chiefs, terms were not shown.
This is great news.

-
@AsadZ I’d have felt a whole lot better about this if it was 5 days ago.
-
I wonder how that all works? Chiefs were tight against the cap before Chris got a raise.
-
@BShark When I wrote that, it was not on ESPN NFL site, CBS NFL site, Chiefs USA Today site, or NBC Pro Football Talk. I do not use Twitter!
-
@dylans I think performance bonuses do not count against the cap.
-
@mayjay Not this years cap. That’s correct.
-
@dylans I should have acknowledged that since the contract isn’t long-term with a huge percentage of it being a signing bonus amortized over the full-term, you are right: the Chiefs do not gain extra cap room in the future to sign FAs.
No word yet on if Jones can get tagged next year? Kicking the can down the road, I guess. I also wonder about guaranteed amounts…is Jones betting on free agency and accepting an injury risk for 1 year?
Lots we don’t know!
-
@dylans @AsadZ Ok, details have been released. Same base salary for this year of $19.5 million, plus @ $6 mil in possible perf bonuses so he can make up his fines.
Free agent next year, but KC still has franchise tag available.
No word on any guarantees.
-
So CJ essentially got a small consolation prize for holding out and no additional leverage for next year. All that drama for nothing.
What Non-QB has held out and actually gotten the deal they were after?
