The need for 2023 bigs

@BShark he’s Got good foot work and would add some decent depth at the 5

You are grossly overrating him. Loads of guys look great in HS and do nothing in college but especially the first year. Do you know this kid??? There is a reason his offer sheet is what it is.
If we get a big it will be in the portal.

How many long term project big men have worked out for Self and made it to the starting lineup or even rotation? None, they all end up transferring to a mid major or lower because Self recruits over them and they never fully develop to a Big 12 caliber player.

@BShark I didn’t say he was the second coming of wilt chamberlain I just said he’s decent

@ReggieKansas said in The need for 2023 bigs:
@BeddieKU23 I agree. I think the kid at tech would be a good add.
Aimaq is at best Landen Lucas 2.0. KU has two bigs with much higher ceilings than him already on the roster.

What would he offer over KJ/Udeh/Zuby as a FR? I think that’s a fair question to ask.

True. I’m curious how the staff is gonna fill the spots of the transfers.

KU only has 12 roster spots available, Self doesn’t have room for a pet project right now. KU currently doesn’t have a 3 or a 4 on the roster so that’s the biggest need in the transfer market, not a long term 5 that would at best start for 1 season here.
-
@BeddieKU23 4 sure. BTW how many open scholarships do we have now with the transfers?

2 wings (for 3/4), 1 big guard that can shoot to play next to Juan. 4th spot somewhat up in the air. Imo.

KU will have 4 open spots once Cuffe and Rice enter the portal.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 are they a lock to leave?

Yes, Cuffe isn’t good enough to play here and Rice isn’t tough enough to play here.
-
@ReggieKansas Yes
-
We will have 4 scholarships for Transfers. Don’t worry about the numbers currently (we have 2 open). The numbers always work out.

That last spot needs to be another wing otherwise KU is going to be very small next year with no depth at the wing.

@Texas-Hawk-10 both have struggled but that’s not a lock that they transfer. Cuffe can’t stay healthy for more than 10 mins. Rice had struggles with health and play. But we will see what happens
-
@BeddieKU23 I agree

@Texas-Hawk-10 we do have the wing from LA coming did u count him?

Read other threads on here, Cuffe and Rice are gone and it’s just a matter when they enter the portal, not if. MJ Rice did not play a minute against Howard. If he was injured, there would’ve been something said after the game. Him not playing in that game should tell you all you need to know about him.

I guess it depends what you classify as a wing? All our legit guard targets (that I know of) are 6’5’’. I think if you get a guy like that to pair with, random examples here but Spencer Jones 6’7’’ and Harrison Ingram 6’8’’ then you can probably get by between all that and Marcus Adams as a bench piece? Will be interesting!
-
@BShark marcus can put the ball on the deck and get his own shot as well. He has a decent handle
-
@ReggieKansas I think he will contribute, but you need at least 3 guys. Staff has them lined up.
-
@BShark I agree

With KJ at the 5, you need two other taller players to help with interior defense and rebounding. Running a line up out there with 4 guys that are 6-6 and under will be an issue in the Big 12. Especially given that Self doesn’t like to press on defense. The Stanford kids absolutely help with that as they are better defenders than Dick and Wilson were.

I really doubt the staff adds a big man that is playable.
It will sound like “duh” but if they add a big man, they are either basically an obvious and guaranteed starter or they won’t see the floor. They won’t add a “rotation” big man. Jmo.
