2 Texas is very much in play. Per Travis Branham and EBoss. It’s behind a paywall so I can’t link.
-
Yep saw that on Rupp Rafters. Would it surprise anyone if suddenly we get news that Cal and UK have negotiated the buyout and he takes the Texas gig? The majority of their fans are very disappointed with him and rightfully so.
-
If so I got 5 cents that says Jay Wight will take his spot.
-
Other coaches mentioned in order:
Tony Bennett, Andy Enfield, Royal Ivey, Jai Lucas, Eric Mussleman, Nate Oats, Rick Pitino, Rodney Terry, Calimari.
Calimari doesn’t have a buyout, he can leave on his own with notice. If UK terminates the buyout is lofty.
I think Enfield could be an interesting option. Recruiting well at another school that doesn’t give two craps about basketball. Low expectations, just like Austin.
Musselman/Oats obviously fit the bill too recruiting well in the SEC. Both could be realistic targets.

Calipari stands to earn upward of $50 mil if he stays until 2029. If he steps down after '24-25 he earns $950,000 yearly for life as a “special assistant” to UK.
I’d love to be a fly on the wall in negotiations to get him to leave all that dough. And I’d love to hear how UT could justify bringing in a guy who routinely underperforms with much better talent than he could get to Texas.
-
I mena i love the drama. I think it has disaster written all over it for both parties.
Cal isn’t as bad as UK fans think he is. And Texas over leveraging themselves for a basketball coach who is 63 years old sounds like a titanic level ship wreck for the program.

I agree , yet personally I don’t think that’s gonna happen

Don’t forget Frank Mason is advocating for himself as the Texas Coach.

I would be shocked at this point if Calipari is at Kentucky next year.

I’ve been told by people here it won’t happen because of his buyout

Complete non-issue, and he will have another job.
-
Kentucky would either have to fire him and pay his 50 million dollar buyout, or Calipari would walk because another school had offered him a job that was competitive with that buyout. But either way, the buyout is an issue.
-
Just way too much smoke for there not to be a fire in Lexington.
-
I’m not saying it can’t happen, but I don’t think Kentucky would fire him at this stage. And there would have to be interest from another school (like Texas) to make it worth walking and leaving all that money on the table for Calipari. But yes, the relationship between Calipari and the Kentucky AD doesn’t seem great at the moment.
-
Even if I’m Cal and want the Texas job, I’m basically going to make UK fire me. I doubt there’s buyout offset language in his contract.
-
If it gets bad enough that Cal WANTS to leave (and it looks like it is getting that way) a negotiated buyout probably happens.
$10M for Cal to go away and he gets something like $7M/yr from UT guaranteed for 5 years. That gets him $55M either way. He can do that at UK or he can do that at UT. With some clause that if he doesn’t make it 3 years at Texas then UK pays him an additional $20M over 5 years.
Cal is obviously in control of the situation. I just don’t know someone who could work in a better situation for the same money that doesn’t take that opportunity… There are many ways to make the money work.

Texas has admitted that they have talked to Calipari

Texas can do better.
