Border War Game Thread

  • @justanotherfan rebounding will absolutely plague this team going forward. Good team but has warts.

The 7 man rotation having basically no true bigs is something I never thought I’d see from Self. Not much posting up in general either.

  • @jayballer67 He was bad. I would bet almost anything he won’t be a factor for this team. If he could defend at all he could help but that is just not the case.

I’ll be happy to own up to this if I am wrong and there is a “Cam Martin game” so to speak.

  • I still think Udeh and rice, maybe Zuby will get better!

He’s got a shot at the short list of great PG’s here. Probably selling it short now

not really saying your wrong - -just saying that’s pretty good to get all that out of a 2 minute on the floor time

agree we need those guys watch somewherre on down the line - -we have to have them give us something

KU cruised easily, but a couple issues to worry about for later in the season.

    1. Self only trusts 7 guys on this roster, even in a blowout. Harris, Adams, McCullar, Dick, Wilson, Yesufu and Pettiford are the only guys Self is willing to give any run. We are vulnerable to injury or foul trouble because Self has set a tight seven man rotation. If we are healthy, we are fine, but if any of those 7 aren’t available, that’s trouble.

    2. Lack of size is getting us beat up on the glass. Mizzou had 12 offensive boards. Irrelevant in a blowout, but without any size to go to off the bench, that is a continuing concern.

Great to blow out Mizzou (always). But KU has some things to sort out to prepare for March.

Yup, No. 1 above sure is bothersome. more Rice! today would have been a great game for him to get some run, in that free flowing offense at times. his specialty i’m guessing.

Cam had his chance, but Self got scared when they trimmed the lead a bit. He didn’t really get a chance to show us what he can or can’t do.

Odd take after a 29 point victory. So you think Self was "scared’? Really?

KU -3.5. Beat the spread by just a hair

Beat the spread with about 16:00 left in the first half. Never threatened again. 😀

  • Today was exhibit A on why you don’t press a running team. KU destroyed Missouri’s press tonight. The way you beat Kansas is get back on defense, pack the paint, guard Dick, and force KU to play half court offense in a rock fight.

That was the point when Missouri got the lead under 15 and Cam had just given up an uncontested 3. He did not look like he belonged out there athletically. So I think Self was definitely a little nervous at that point because there was still more than enough for Missouri to come back with the momentum they had at that time. Bringing KJ and Harris back in is what stopped that run.

This was more that my opinion was formed based on what I’ve heard and seen over time. I have been on record thinking he was not going to contribute from the start of this season. Would be nice if he could though.

I’m actually thinking we may never find a regular 5 this season .So oh no I’m not saying Cam for sure. I’m beginning to wonder if Coach doesn’t use optional players for different situations. - -For sure using Kj for defensive purposes and lil scoring when feasible - -Zuby for rim and rebounding energy- - -Udeh for a lil score and rebounding and possibly for a few and I said a few minutes of Cam and Zach these two can stretch the floor – pull bigs out because of possible outside shots. - Could be he just continues to use ALL of them in small doses. - with that many playing for sure be aggressive on the defensive end - -lots of fouls to give- -who knows for sure.

Right now even with his size problem hard to keep KJ out the way he is playing

  • Had tickets to Bulls-Mavericks so recorded the KU game which of course I see the score while wandering the United Center. The Bulls game sucked because Luka sat out with a Wilt never would have sat for that injury called a strained quadricep, although it didn’t prevent him from playing til the end the night before against the Bucks. Even though the tickets were through my sons work, ie, free, I was still pretty pissed because i knew he wasn’t hurt. Boringest NBA game in history. Dallas played 0 defense and Bulls went off for 144 points.

As for the KU game maybe I’ll watch the recording, but don’t have a great desire to do so since I know the result. Glad we kicked the crap out of those lowlifes between two great states. We’ve bounced back nicely after the Tennessee loss.

You should watch. very high paced, exciting beat down. fun.

  • Didn’t want to bother with making a thread about this so I’ll put it here.

That Missouri team is one of the worst coached teams I have seen us play against this year. I only watched a bit of the end of their game against Wichita in addition to this so idk how indicative this has been for them overall but it felt like the Texas Southern game again only Missouri was somewhat more skilled but quite possibly less athletic. I went and looked, Gates had a 55.6 winning percentage at Cleveland State. Interesting hire.

  • Another thought is Kevin has been great the last two games. Was so smart to not bother playing him against Texas Southern.

McCullar coming alive has changed this team.

Game changer. Has had 17, 18, and 21 in 3 of his past 4 games. Can get you 8-10 boards a night, is a theft in passing lanes. Perfect player for this team. Find the corners for open 3’s and cut to the basket for layups. Dude is trying to compete with Jalen for Alpha on this team and if you watch them two’s chemistry together it’s fun to watch

There was a lot of ridicule when he was hired because it didn’t feel like they improved their coaching situation. I said above, yesterday was amazing from a coaching perspective because Missouri did everything you shouldn’t do against this Kansas team. That was some of the worst game planning I’ve ever seen so I don’t know which coach did the scouting report for KU, but that person sucks at the aspect of their job.

A few weeks ago, our critics/fans were calling for McCullar to be benched in favor of MJ Rice.

  • Self mentioned KJ reminds him of a young Draymond. Hefty praise but should let ya know what potential he thinks is there.

  • @Jethro

He did have some rough stretches early. He is really ascending now. I’m very impressed with him and his fit here.

  • Oh, anybody hear why Isaiah Mosley didn’t play? I was really hoping to see him play, see why we passed on him.

  • I do not recall any KU team in recent history that looks so much better when one player is on the court and likewise struggles when the same player in not playing.

That player to me is Juan.

I was fairly adamant that he would not continue to be that bad because it was even worse than he had been at Tech historically. Well now he is healthy and comfortable in the system and is far exceeding that. If we get around Texas Tech McCullar that helps a lot, if we get THIS McCullar we can hang with most.

KJ isn’t terribly far behind either. Big drop off to any of the bench bigs just in terms of the offense being ran correctly. His improvement has been remarkable.

  • Boy the more the season goes on - - -Mercy if KJ was JUST a couple of inches taller. - -Really like the guy , so energetic - - -his height is the only thing holding him back. - -very mobile , can defend pretty well, with time gonna be able to score mor develop his shot some, we can’t depend on him scoring like last night especially going against 6’9 - -6’10mobile 5’s.

The kid just gets after it - -really like him , liking him more every game not afraid to get on the floor, -not afraid to play D- scores some - -MY Kingdom for 2 inches lol

OH WAIT I think I’ve said that before–like last night- - Oooops never mind cancel that out, that’s a different situation never mind sorry lol

  • @BShark Happy Birthday Baby shark! I tried to add the song but I couldn’t! 💙❤🌾 Go Chiefs!❤🎈🥳

  • Finally watching the game. Missouri was laughably bad. One hilarious pick and roll with DeJuan and KJ resulted in KJ dunking the ball with 2 tiggers standing there watching. Announcers trying to keep viewers interested with shouting things like “KU MISSED”. “MISSOURI CUTS IT TO 19 POINTS”. I learned their coach is a great coach according to the TV guy. As someone mentioned above that team is not any better than some of the directional schools we played.

Adams seized the moment and played a spectacular game.

Dick seems to have one ‘unconscious’ stretch every game.

Harris just plain boring. Steady, steady, distributing, guarding, setting up. KU ran one beautiful play where Jalen set a back pick for McCullar who was wide open at the line right in front of the KU bench. DeJuan pitched a beautiful pass clear across the court to the wide open MCCullar. To deliver a pass across the lane, the entire width of the court like that without it being tipped was just beautiful.

Jalen continues to write his name into KU lore with one great experience after another. It seems like it was a long time ago he committed to us after de-committing from Michigan and his early struggles to find meaningful minutes. He makes few mistakes and is shooting really well, something I think most of us wouldn’t see.

I went back and checked my comments after Duke and it was as I remembered. That day I said our bench is thin. Others disagreed which is fine, I’ve been wrong before, but as noted above we’re winning by 20 or more and our starters are out there in the final 2 minutes. I’m a bit concerned. Cam makes a uh, Cameo, (sorry too easy). Someone’s going to have to step up, particularly a big.

Hearing the chant in Columbia is pretty cool.

  • Happy belated @BShark !

  • LL and his dad have another good video up talking about playing Misery. He has some nice insights:

  • That sucking sound is Mizery - they are so bad KU beating them by more than 20 points over the spread still drug Kansas down in the rankings. 😯
