Hoorah for ol Roy!

  • Wow, UNC took care of Mich St at Mich St.

  • UNC played much better than MSU. UNC has a lot of talent but they are still wildly inconsistent. Entertaining game particularly when the team you want to win does…not that I am a UNC fan, but given the choice I will take them over MSU any day.

  • Holy smokes, he’s 7-0 against Izzo? That’s a secret recipe Bill Self needs to ask Roy for.

    Link to ESPN story here.

  • Your avatar is a striking resemblance to Roy. Coincidence?

  • “That’s a secret recipe Bill Self needs to ask Roy for.”

‘Run and gun Roy’ is what I used to call him. I like Roy and it was nice to see him thump Izzo. I’m probably in the minority in here, but I like Izzo, too. Cal is one of the few coaches I really dislike.

  • It’s a toss up. I enjoy both coaches, and their respective styles. Weird how the game works, though: Selfs Style Slaughters Roy, while Roy handles Izzo, but Self cannot. Interesting.

  • @Blown - good point. I think Self’s style rams horns with Izzo’s. Izzo comes out on top because they play in the B10, which allows more physical play. Izzo’s teams always push physical play to the limit without fouling out.

I think the way for Self to beat Izzo is to hope the refs calling the game come from a conference that allows the least amount of contact. I think Jaybate used to call Izzo’s game XtremeMuscleBall… or something like that.

Roy’s game is more about floor speed. So their match-up looked like Roy’s team out-hustled Izzo’s when in reality, he just matched up players with better lateral speed, so naturally they won on 50/50 balls.

I think we have a good team to challenge Izzo’s this year. By March, we will have Embiid dominating the middle, with blocks and rebounds. And we have the potential to go small on the perimeter with speed. I would think we would do better running two PGs than Tharpe and Selden (if facing MSU). Selden’s play is more about ramming horns (when matched up with an Izzo team). Then look at one of our biggest weapons this year… one will be Wiggins, but maybe our biggest weapon will be Embiid dominating defensive boards and using the best outlet passing in college basketball! Suddenly we’ve got Izzo’s guards unable to attack on offense because if they do they give up a lot of run outs on the other end.

And we have muscle with Black. If we need to go horn-to-horn with Izzo at least this year we have the services of a real bull!

We have so many diverse weapons to throw at Izzo… very different from past Jayhawk teams that would get out-muscled in all areas of the game by Izzo’s team.

With you… Izzo is my second favorite coach.

  • This post is deleted!

  • I still have a soft spot for Coach Williams. I really appreciate what he did at and for KU and I have no problem with him leaving, we all knew it would happen sooner or later, I have a problem with the way he did it, and for that I blame Dean Smith, a former Jayhawk no less.

  • Your avatar is a striking resemblance to Roy. Coincidence?

Yep @KGphoto, if you’re talking about my avatar it is coincidence. But he is far more loyal than Roy.

  • Rock, papers, scissors between Self, Williams, and Izzo.

  • I dont have any problem with Roy (we wont talk about his not recruiting East of the Mississippi while at KU…), its just when I see him having to face KU, he is facing a superior system of ball. Once I figured out all of what Self coaches his kids to do (in 2006-7 season is when the lightbulb came on for me, as I saw the playstyle, and I saw the recruits were stud athletes), I realized we had a chance to be special…and Self has become the star of KU basketball now as he has made us VERY special.

I must add, that when Self threw a junk defense at Roy’s squad in our last mtg, it was rather stark for Roy to reveal he did not know what defense KU was in…because for a critical 7min, it totally stifled UNC.

I have JOKED that Izzo has Self’s number, as Izzo is 3-0 vs. KU-Self…but really, only 1 game did we get owned, and that was when the frosh Twins got pushed around and bounced out of the Tourney. The other 2 games we blew late 7-9pt leads, if I recall…so Self’s system CAN play with Izzo’s, we just didnt finish them off. Also, Self was a Big10 coach also–> where do you think the “dont be soft!” stuff comes from. Notice he pulled out some rarely used Big10-style “tricks” when he ordered EJ to set the ‘stiff’ screen on that other Big10 team Michigan…(that’s all I think that was). Notice also the Twins soph season, Marcus breaks Raymar Morgan’s nose. Tough play=Bill Self. But he is crafty enough with it to not get his KU teams a bad reputation for playing dirty.

Lets see how tough this bunch of kids gets for the OSU and ISU games…

  • I kinda hope we meet them in the final four. Great team, great coach but we seem to have their number in the big dance.
