Kansas Jayhawks vs TCU Horned Frogs 🐸 Game Chat Tues. 1/6 8:00 CT

@approxinfinity Who said Elmarko should start and are they legally blind hahah. Tiller was better for much of the game which is crazy because Flory is obviously the much better player when he in engaged.
-
I don't think Elmarko should be the full time starter but starting him over Tiller for a game or two might be the wakeup call Tiller needs
-
@Jayhawk_69 i would start jamari instead. Feel like he has earned it.
-
Can’t remember who the five were for overtime. Wasn’t it both elmarko and Jamari?
-
Switching 5 would work better with 4 guards
-
I dont remember either @benshawks08
This too @kjayhawks2.0, was thinking that exact thought when considering benching Bryson. I think we need to see what 4 guards look like. Good opportunity to do while Tiller's in the toughening box.
-
@approxinfinity I feel like the opposition has watched enough tape at this point to out who can’t guard as well and they set some meaningless screens just to get a favorable switch and then go to hole. Elmarko can be a great defender when he wants to be, Mari is better offensively tho.

One thing I kept thinking was this is good team with free throws. Over the years this has frustratingly not always been the case. Made 30 of them last night.
Another thing that we have that was missing from last year is a dawg. Melvin looks fearless out there most of the time. Very refreshing.
Yet another difference is having a 3 pt assassin. DP’s stroke is so smooth, I expect every shot to fall. As an added bonus he can also penetrate, draws multiple coverage, has good IQ, and last night showed some toughness.
Last season was often tough to watch. This one definitely has a more likable cast of characters. Interesting to see how the season pans out.

Darryn Peterson Highlights vs. TCU
-
Full 15-point 2nd Half comeback (2nd Half plus overtime)

TCU set a college basketball record for dumbest 6 seconds. To not be able to inbound the ball with 6 seconds was dumb. To not foul Flory when he got the inbounds pass is dumb. To foul DP when he shot was REALLY dumb. To throw the ball length of court out of bounds was really dumb. They almost fouled DP when he shot on the ensuing inbounds was dumb.
Ironically I think we were the record holder for our collapse against Houston last year in the same hallowed building. I forget how we lost that game specifically but remember thinking this is a dumb team. So thanks TCU for knocking us out of worst dumbest status.
One other difference between us and TCU in dumbness. Last night probably had no impact on TCU and their fans because they could care less about hoops down there, while it's the only reason for our existence as KU fans!

We need to be able to rebound. Tiller helps there. Without him i'm afraid we'd get demolished on the boards. Post presence, too. Well, we haven't had much of that lately, but i'm hoping this is all Tiller gaining experience.
He has a good knack for blocking shots, too (tiller). He's just gotta man up and play inside more. Learning curve as he likely thinks he's a 3.
Not many other options for a playable big. Myiba seems pretty stiff.

30 of 40 free throws and a ton of them were late in the game. When you have two like Darryn and Melvin you can get those drives. How many and ones were there. I know Melvin had of them. Two really clutch ones were the DP triplets and Mari's two in OT. They could have fouled Melvin again but let him pass to Mari. We have seen a lot of clutch FT's from this team.
-
@wissox83 No. We set 2 records for dumbest 6 seconds against Houston last year. Maybe TCU can have 3rd place
-
@Jayhawk_69 I think the difference to me is Houston made incredible shots to beat us even as we were making dumb plays like they were last night. Last night we didn't really make any incredible plays in that last 6 seconds. Silly thing to argue I know!

Yes, plus Tre, Melvin and Flory. Those 5 played all 5 minutes of overtime.

I think that Houston game really broke us last season. It’s a coin flip as to which is a bigger collapse. We had the ball at line for a 1 and 1 with 10 seconds to go in that one up by 6. I get so frustrated looking at online post where people that didn’t even watch the game blame the refs as well the TCU fans listening to Fran. Does anyone else watch him call other games? Is that critical of everything in those games. I’m sorry but 3 turnovers and 3 1 &1 missed in the final 1:34 seems like you would have to take some of then ownership of the loss.

Took a few days off since last Saturday really put me in a certain mood and needed to unwind from that without saying stuff in the moment.
Glad they pulled out the Win Tuesday.
I went to bed when they were down 15 midway 2nd half, partly for my sanity purposes at that point staring down the reality of being 0-2 in conference play for the first time in 30+ years. The other half is my work schedule makes it difficult to stay up to 11+ during the week. Given the OT and how the game went to the bitter end I can't imagine I would have slept much which would have made it worse.
Is this Karma for the Houston debacle last year or shades of the West Virginia game in 17. Those two certainly come to mind watching the last 15 minutes of this game. Very improbable win. I'd like to believe this will fuel. Some thoughts so far.

Peterson played a season high 32 minutes and looked noticeably more athletic than we've seen. While he's still clearly managing the issue, he did look good. I hope he can get to 100% but we'll only know when we really see that extra gear/speed/athletic ability that is there.
-
On Offense, it certainly feels like this team is starting over with DP in the lineup. Flory and Council have struggled so far to make an impact with him. DP needs to do a better job figuring out how to make plays for them too (only 2 assists in 2 games).
-
What has happened to the defense? Either UCF/TCU have really scouted us well with the switching D or something needs to change. Knowing Self he'll buckle down further with the switching. So far in conference play we are making it very easy for teams to T up from 3 and the rebounding efforts have been very poor. Part of the rebounding issues are caused by the switching D.
-
Self literally needs to light a fire under the bench right now. In 107 minutes here is the combined stat line of the bench so far: 12 pts, 6 rbs, 6 asts, 6 steals (5 from 1 player in 1 game) from 5 guys. This is where the main issue with this team lies currently. I don't know if it's become a coaching issue, but it's been very inconsistent all year and so far in conference play, well below average. The lack of production from the bench makes it so all 5 starters have no room for error. Maybe Peterson can go for 25+ every night and give us a chance but it's crazy how unproductive our bench is.
-
I really hope this win was a wakeup call for the team on the type of effort and execution needed to win in conference play. I expected better and we've seen discouraging things in both games. Self needs to figure this out, it starts with him having them prepared.

I was too tense before the game to draw my attention away from just watching the game with my girls. There's a rule that when we watch together, no phones. We are in the moment so to speak. It was nerve wracking and disappointing at times but once we tied it, I knew we were going to pull it out for Scooter. I had been reflecting on the many times I talked with him and all the tributes that have been pouring in for him are all absolutely from the heart. He touched so many people and for the team to get that click on of how important a game it was, there was no stopping them. An angel was there for them. To see the joy and bewilderment of the team we all love and what we as fans witnessed is one of those games that will live in so many hearts for so many years to come.

Absolutely that Houston loss was the dagger. The Utah Road Trip is where Self completely lost the team though. There was no consequences for certain mercenaries after though which I found even more troubling.
