Here we go again - Self rumor mill

  • @FarmerJayhawk I don’t see him going anywhere.

helps if you have your eyes open , then you might . – The chances are better then you think , as many as pointed out to as why. -not saying for sure 100 % that he does - -but the chances are a lot better of it happening then you think.

If he does it isn’t going to be the end of the world. - Bill is a good Coach but there are other good Coaches. KU never has and never will have a problem attracting a name Coach. - Do I ant him to go ? – Ummm no - -is the chance of him leaving legit ? – Very much so

  • I’ll take bets with anyone here that he doesn’t leave after this season. Barring an NCAA ban of Self, of course. That would seem rather harsh though.

  • SO - if he DOES leave - do we love him or hate him?

    I’m just hoping that he doesn’t tell Bonnie Bernstein " I don’t give a SH*T about the NBA "

Self on the latest Spurs speculation from Seth Greenberg: “I haven’t talked to Seth in 5-6 months and I’ve never talked to R.C. (Buford) EVER about it, and he was in my wedding and I was in his wedding, so I know him pretty well… There is no truth, ZERO truth to that rumor.”

Ok , sounds good. - the question here is and you need to be honest. - -How many other Coach’s in almost any profession have you heard say almost those exact same words ? - -just sayin - don’t want you to come back later if he leaves and say that your just shocked - - -you shouldn’t be. - -In todays world - - never say never

  • @BShark just read it! 🙄 loose lips!💋

  • I wonder if Self is just mad that someone spilled the beans

  • Did you hear how excited he was to get Bryce?

Self won’t be their top choice if Pop retires after this season. They’ve been grooming Becky Hammon to take that job for several years now and that’s who likely takes over. She’s earned the respect of everyone who’s played there, she’s been a pro before so her knowledge of the game is unquestioned, and if Pop is endorsing her, which will happen when the time comes, she’ll get the job. Only way Hammon isn’t the Spurs next coach is if Pop doesn’t retire and some other team hires her first. Then I would look at quite a few other coaches from Pop’s tree first before Self would be brought in.

The family connection of having Tyler working in the scouting department could help Self’s case, but I still think he’s pretty far down the Spurs list at this point.

    I don’t agree with that.

Right now… Self is a “one hit wonder.” You know… like music groups that only pump out one hit. Guess we can say another version of one and done.

Self’ should want his legacy to read that he sits on the top line in D1 coaching. He’s not there yet. The conference streak was a huge help. But he needs national championships because there exists a pile of coaches that own more than one.

Winning one of anything sounds like a fluke.

Look around. Most of the basketball world puts Roy ahead of Bill. Roy!!! Mr. Run and Gun. And I like Roy… but… is he one of the greats ever to coach D1? It’s like putting Cal in that group… Mr. Recruiter. Luckily, Cal hasn’t won more. Yet.

Yes. Roy is one of the best ever to coach in college by any metric. Will probably pass Dean in wins tomorrow, has several titles.

you seem to forget, there comes a time when ANY Coach just flat ass gets tired of the NCAA’S BULLSHIT constantly screwin around. - After awhile the Coach more times then not will say screw this- -I’m not messing with these idiots anymore - -starts to take a toll. - -How many Coach’s would love to have that ONE so called Championship ? - -there are dozens to say the least that would be thrilled to have Coached a National Championship. Coach already has that - - - Already in the hall of fame

Again I’m not saying he IS going , hope he doesn’t. I just think there are people including here that just flat as think there is no way he would leave and to that I just have to laugh. - Either Blind or just not the brightest light in the house, - -DON’T EVER say it won’t happen - - it can’t happen.

The only certain things in life is Death and Taxes and you really don’t even have to pay taxes. - hope he stays , but yet I’m not gonna think it’s the end of the world if he were to leave , sure the hell not gonna go out and jump off a cliff or the Golden Gate Bridge - we - -will - - be - - fine if that were to happen. some make it sound like it would put us at a Defcon -5 lmao - -this NCAA thing will play a part hide and watch

If it’s not now - -it WILL happen - -people still going into freak panic mode then ?

Hope coach stays 30 years, but I’m just that type of guy - - if it happens - - it happens, can’t force a guy, if he did want to go all we can do would be thanks for all the years and giving us so many great teams.

Like I said we would be fine. We was fine before Bill got here and we would be fine if he left. - KU is that type of program we never going to struggle getting a top notch Coach. - -Having said that I think he WILL stay, but I won’t limit myself to come out and make a statement implying OH COACH would never leave - - or he isn’t going anywhere. - - wise man once said - - -NEVER SAY NEVER. – ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Oh, if he is banned - which I don’t see happening - no doubt he’ll be gone.

  • @jayballer73 You know I agree with you on the risk. Regardless of some who minimize it, the volatility with the NCAA stuff creates a very heightened risk.

We can attract an excellent coach. But that is even a riskier proposition. Odds are really strong in my opinion that we get something less than Self.

Do we trust Long to make the right hire? I don’t. He could have some personal tie to a coach that could send the program in a tailspin. The KU admin. could push the wrong “diversity” hire. Even the perceived right hire could be wrong. I think Beard from TT would be perfect. But I thought EJ would be a lights out PG too. Point is, sometimes things we really believe don’t play out the way we expected. We could hire Beard and his wife hates it here, or one of his kids becomes ill, or he clashes with the AD. Whatever.

    This is very dangerous business.

Great programs can become average quickly. Remember when UNC made some bad hires before Roy? Bill Guthridge and Matt Doherty? Doherty hovered just above .500.

Look where UCLA and Indiana have gone. Look where UK went before Cal. And the UNC reference before Roy. All blue bloods. Look at UConn now.

Self is the greatest coach in KU history. This entire NCAA stuff and it’s possible impact is really unnerving. We don’t want to lose Self at pretty much any cost, in my opinion.

Odds are strong, that if we do lose Self, we move backwards.

  • @HighEliteMajor You mean 2001 coach of the year Matt Doherty? One hit wonder.

  • @dylans Right, after being coach of the year his first season (with Guthridge’s players) he went 8-20 the next season. Guthridge actually wasn’t too bad.

We very well could. If it comes to that point where we having to find another Coach , could be a crap shoot for sure. Beard is good , my only thing with him and it might be a crazy thought , but I just don’t get that feel where he would stick that long, more of a jumper , then again on the other hand might not if that were to come to a reality.

I mean really not a lot of other more elite places he could go where it would be a step up after KU. - I just feel there are some that just have this idea , the Earth would explode before Coach were to leave/ While true it would be a sad day, still doesn’t mean it couldn’t happen - -happen more easily then some seem to believe. - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @HighEliteMajor ironically Roy won it all with mostly Dohertys guys. Even more painfully ironic -Roy’s winning 3 championships at UNC after learning from his Kansas losses.

  • @dylans That’s true, didn’t really think about Roy’s first title. Heck, Weber about won one with Self’s guys.

Doubtful this would have any effect on Self choosing the NBA if he wanted to go that route. Beilein called his team a bunch of thugs about a month ago, then tried to backtrack and say he meant slugs and consequently lost the locker room.
