KSU Brawl = More Risk That Self Leaves

  • When this Adidas story took hold and Self made his infamous all points denial in October of 2018, one major concern was that the entire mess could lead to Self’s exit from the program. We’ve had lots of discussion the point. I tend think there is significantly more risk of his departure than most here.

One point I raised was that there are other forces beyond Self that could create his exit – the AD, the school administration, and Board of Regents.

Read this article. I’m sure if you feel there is “now way” Self leaves or is forced out or that “you will believe when you see it” in assessing the risk, this article should cause you some pause.

Look, lots of folks that don’t see things the same way many of us do. Lots of folks to whom basketball is not the pilgrimage it is for us.

Stuff like the KSU brawl is just more ammo for folks in positions of influence that might not be completely enamored with what has transpired.

It just creates even more risk.

  • The student body president won office in an uncontested race. Does anyone really care what the student body president thinks?

  • Is Self’s problem that he is too likely to talk to the media about these things? There aren’t any cover ups (that we know of obviously). Every player that has had discipline issues has faced consequences and for the most part Self discussed these things as much as he can without throwing his players under the bus. We’ve seen recently that deny, deny, deny, then lie, lie, lie can be an effective PR strategy.

Does winning a title this year make him more or less likely to be gone?

I was in student government back in the day and didn’t give a damn

  • @approxinfinity I’m sure no one cares about the student body president.

Board of Regents is much different.

  • I’m a bit cynical these days. In questions involving millions of dollars, I tend to try and guess what benefits those making the decisions the most. 57 year old Hall of Fame coach, .814 winning percentage, adored by fans and players, loyal to the program… seems like the money would be on keeping him here - unless the sanctions later this year really go south.

So you know and talk to the Board of Regents members?

I know a few. And spoke to people very close to them after the brawl to take the temperature.

  • @FarmerJayhawk So this Bangerter fellow mentioned in the article. It caught my eye. He was mentioned in an article after the wiretapping stuff back near the time of Self’s statement. He seemed quite displeased with everything. There was also a radio discussion on him.

What do you know about him?

I don’t know Shane as well as some others but my impression is he’s very measured and sensitive to the reputation of the universities. He has a keen understanding that KU basketball is the state’s best sports brand, a big reason why KU is growing again, and doesn’t want that to change (I.e. become Indiana or UCLA). I don’t know his personal fandom. I suspect he’s not a KU partisan since he went to Oral Roberts. But there’s a chance he and Self overlapped there so there may be some warm and fuzzies. I don’t know his age for sure.

That being said, he’s very opposed to micromanaging the institutions from what I understand. The Regents don’t really want to get involved unless it’s something pretty egregious like the KU professor getting indicted for not disclosing he held a similar position with the ChiComms. They’d much rather focus their limited time and resources on big picture issues like state appropriations and admissions standards.

Just as an example, they have zero interest in the Beaty vs. KU lawsuit. It’s certainly within their authority to order KU to settle but they’ve never even requested a briefing from KU counsel on the matter.

Happy to answer follow-ups if you have them.

  • I think most of the Jayhawk Nation still loves Self. That counts bigly. It is quite possible that some of these reactions are positional people posturing politically. Positional People Posturing Politically. The 4 Ps!

So earlier I’m reading some of this “anti-KU/Self hype” and it includes Snoop Dogg’s pole dancers and money guns. Really? That kind of sticks out to me and tells me there is way too much hype in all of this. OMG… a MONEY GUN!!! Gimme a break! Gheez…

  • Read a pretty good article from the Athletic. Pretty much says what some have said and that was actually what more does Coach Self have to gain from remaining here?

Hall of Fame College Basketball Coach , Six time Big Twelve Coach of the year , Three Final fours , Fourteen Straight Conference Championships & National Championship , the article says what’s there to gain other possibly maybe a couple more Championships ?

They make the statement talk about the possibility of him leaving the College ranks come up one or twice a year and KU people kin of just blow it off saying that would never happen

Like they said though there may just come a point and come soon that Coach Self having to deal with this last accident of the whole KU/Kstate brawl , the NCAA investigation that many feel that the NCAA is going to come down very hard , Coach very easily could decide he just had enough of these types of things and decide he wants to test the NBA waters while his name is a hot commodity on the Coaching level.

Now I’m not saying that will happen , not at all BUT what I am saying there are some people here that are very misguided in the sense that they feel or have that conception Coach Self would never leave for the NBA. To that I’ll say you need to remove your blinders. Loyality as being the reason from a lot of people , even that goes so far , even your most loyal of people can only take so much before they say enough is enough.

All I can say is Never say Never , you continue to look at it like that - - -one day you gonna wake up and say - -what the hell happened ? and I’m totally shocked I never saw that coming OR the typical I just don’t understand it. - Like I said now do I WANT Coach Self to leave ummm NO BUT IF it does KU will be fine , we have never had any problem with the Coach’s that have become our Coach or what they have become. KU was fine before Coach arrived here and KU will be fine if he leaves. All I’m saying is don’t continue to hide and feel secure under that rock and feel like he won’t leave. It happens all the time Coaching changes everywhere from Coast to Coast and we are not immune her at KU to that either.-- ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @jayballer73 the other candidates for the job were Ernie Kent, Mark Turgeon and Tom Crean. I think we got really lucky with Bill.

  • @drgnslayr Another false narrative by the media -Bill didn’t want Snoop Dogg. That’s on Long. Bill wanted Darius Rucker (Hootie and the blowfish).

  • @dylans I think we can agree though that if Self didn’t want it, it wouldn’t happen. Self is the boss of BB, not Long. With the announcement of Snoop, rolling into the music store, big gold chain, Adidas shirt, all at the height of the scandal discussion, Self owned it.

Self then acted incredulous, as if he had no idea of how the imagery would be perceived.

Self said - “I do not like the narrative that has been said concerning that with me, but I also understand I can’t control what the media writes or their opinions,” Self said at KU’s media day Wednesday (via the The Kansas City Star). “I do know and people that know me know that’s not factually true in any way shape or form.”

Uh, maybe a bit of a liar? Or artfully deceptive?

I don’t like Pat Forde much at all, but his take on this Snoop thing was right on point.

@FarmerJayhawk Good info. I checked, Bangerter is a lawyer and went to KU law school.

  • @HighEliteMajor

Funny enough, Self actually had his own idea for a music act, but it never got really far.

Well first of all it’d never be up to me, but I don’t know who it’d be [if I could choose],” Self said. “I actually thought somebody like Darius Rucker. He’d sing all the old stuff and then he’s got a few new hits. And obviously he’s a huge sports fan. That would be somebody I would think about.”

  • @dylans So you do agree that Self has the final say, right? I know Self (or me or you) might not have the same tastes as the athlete. They’re obviously playing to that – that said, I’m sure Snoop’s performance was perfect for some.

  • Always happy to be told what I agree to even if I don’t!

  • Self does not have anything to do w/late pm.

  • @HighEliteMajor Bold move bring a Pat Forde article in on this. That guy is terrible especially so when talking KU. It’s like going to Fox News to hear about Democrats or MSNBC about Republicans. You already know what it’s going to say and the truth of the matter rarely matters in any “analysis” from the source.

  • Pat forde is a 💩

  • From Sports Illustrated: “Forde graduated from the University of Missouri School of Journalism in 1987 and lives in Louisville.”

    Need I say more.

  • Kick DeSousa off the team and all is well. He has no place - a chair? - in the college game or any game, for that matter. Sorry, but what I saw from him in that skirmish was a game changer for me.

  • @Marco no way!

  • Crimsonorblue22 said:

And why not, @Crimsonorblue22? KU is a university (or even on a pro team!), and actions such as what he almost did have to be made an example of. Braun saved a life, but what De Sousa - if successful - was attempting to do could have taken one. Things like that need to be nipped in the bud, so that others will know that unless in war those things are unacceptable.

  • Man … hot takes are still flying on this.

  • @Marco Were you at the game and see it in person?

The context from viewing it on TV (multiple angles) made it easier for me to have a balanced perspective than when I saw the still photos.

I was not at the game, but I do know what a steel chair or any chair looks like and what it could potentially do.

    I believe in second chances.

  • Just fyi, Silvio was wielding a photographer’s stool, not that that makes it any better…

  • @bskeet nah, ya gotta look at the angles and be there in person. What may look like wielding from one angle is just grabbin it to place in a different location from another angle.

Basically the photographers stool was just in the way and needed to be relocated

  • How do we know Silvio wasn’t trying to protect himself? 3 guys did come after him.

  • He dropped it after his help came.

  • @cragarhawk lol… ok. 👍

  • Lol

  • I also have some ocean front property in central ks if any are in the buying mood

  • Good thing some people here aren’t the coach. No way do you get him off the team. Mega chuds like Forde and Vitale can pound sand.

  • Great! Who wouldn’t want to watch the sun set over an ocean… of native grasses.

  • @BShark dickitch

  • Did anybody see the beginning of KSU game? Wondered if we got raked over the coals again?

  • @Crimsonorblue22 Do they televise KState games?

  • Lol

Did you happen to catch Coach Self’s comment ? - - -No ? – you need to

  • cragarhawk said:

Just going by the names I recognize as ocean-front, I am guessing your property is in Havana, Tampa, or Long Island, Kansas? Maybe Jamestown, Kansas if you are stretching it.

    How much?

  • Only way Self leaves anytime soon is the school gets hit with major sanctions and he resigns or he retires after winning another National title.

  • I still have no problem with any actions by anyone in a KU Jersey outside of the stool grabbing. We can argue all night about if staring a guy down is right or wrong given the situation I’d done the same. I yelled “Get out bih” when he blocked it. People get stared down all the damn time in this sport and it doesn’t lead to a bench clearing brawl. Heck OSU did it tonight after a late dunk. Heard from multiple people at the game Love talking trash all night from the bench looking for trouble before and during the game. He saw a window to up the drama and did. I suppose you have to do something to keep the season entertaining playing on a sorry a team like that. I’m wondering how many hundreds of thousands of times ESPN has shown the highlight of Allen Iverson staring down Lue and stepping over him like it was something spectacular.

  • What was going thru Silvio’s mind during the block… https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=haq3m4Dkz_I
