2020 Recruiting

  • Caleb Love is now down to Mizzou, Louisville, UNC, and KU.

Sounds like Mizzou is a lot bigger player than most thought.

  • @Woodrow

Window dressing. This is a KU/UNC battle

    That’ll hurt curb appeal. Lol

  • The Love visit as scheduled isn’t happening due to Team USA stuff. Will be rescheduled.

    Really?

I put on his tape. Has some bounce to him, good athletic ability it appears. Can protect the rim. Functional form on his jumper with range so he’s a stretch type guy candidate at that height. Will need weight room. Lobs, Pick and Roll upside & stretching the defense seem like things that could translate to KU.

In all, begs the question if we are looking into a player K-St thinks they can land then what does that say about KU’s recruiting right now. Has Weber found a good one? There’s upside there and some translatable skills.

  • @BeddieKU23 yeah they seem to think he is theirs to lose. I do not know where he ranks among KU targets.

  • @BShark

I’m assuming since we went in-home that KU is interested in him.

This is a strange cycle already. Do you get that vibe?

  • @BeddieKU23 I think it’s weird that we haven’t heard that KU leads for anyone. We also don’t really have good official recruiting coverage now. Matt Scott is pretty much the best we have regardless of what people think about him, but he works for kusports now and isn’t putting as much out there.

I am not sure who I like better between Muscadin and Bradford. I’d take the Kalkbrenner kid over either though. Wondering how much of Bradford visiting is KU has three MOKAN kids on the roster now.

Super bizarre cycle. There’s some rumors flying around that Cade Cunningham isn’t done to Okie Lite and that UNC is actually his preferred destination. Only his brother is keeping them in contention. If that’s true, could set off a domino effect of Love and/or Thompson getting pushed to KU.

  • @BShark

What do you like about Kalkbrenner? I was really underwhelmed with his tape and thought he was a real project. He just really underwhelmed me as an athlete besides his shot blocking ability. Maybe he’s a system guy that gets in some where and really develops. I’ll check around to see what else is out there on him.

Bradford is a big dude. Seemed like someone you could mold in this system. His 43% FT shooting though was a turn off.

Muscadin seems like he could be more a 4 then a 5 unless he puts on good weight.

Wow I would not be upset at that scenario playing out.

I don’t think we can land both Love/Thompson but if Self did that would be some home run recruiting there. I’m holding onto the belief we need 1 of Love/Thompson/KK and losing on all 3 would be a bad look. We’ll see how this plays out

  • I see where the K-State guy put in his CB pick for TY Berry to Oklahoma St. – Doesn’t seem like that would make a lot of sense to me if they landed either Thompson or Love would it? - - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Great shot blocker, has potential offensively to develop a mid-range game at the very least. Looks like he needs to bulk up a bit though. Overall I trust the KU program to turn him into an effective cog by year 2 with the potential to start down the line.

None of them are an elite option, I just think he offers more than the other two. Looking into it more I would definitely take Muscadin over Bradford and I do feel like Bradford’s visit to KU is because of the newfound Mokan ties. You want to keep that pipeline open. We will see how it shakes out.

I’d agree with this. Just really need one. Anything beyond that is gravy.

  • Any concern with Love canceling the visit. We see this too much where they never reschedule?? Hopefully they lock in a new date soon. Wouldn’t hurt if he came in after his others

  • Love is going to MU. My prediction is in.

  • @HighEliteMajor I heard from reliable sources that Mizzou is Loves top choice followed by NC

    Not a fan.

Apparently he is visiting for late night as well. Really tough to get a read on this class.

  • Gross. Offering JC kids already… WTF is going on

  • Dam - - Dam - - Dam. - -I was afraid of this - - the kid I REALLY wanted ALOT - -is now Yes he very easily is going to end up playing College Basketball.

Kyree - - is talking that he will enter College this Semester , he has been taking on-line classes - – -and has talked I guess with Western Kentucky Coach.

All I know is we sure the hell could of used his 30.2 scoring or - - his 11 plus rebounding - -or his 6 assists a game - -averages. - -Kid has no position , pretty much plays the 1-4 - - and absolute animal and seemed like he really had an interest in KU - - dammit – kid is a beast - - - Welp - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • Good for him if he can find a team. Too bad he didn’t have his academics in order for KU to grab him at the time.

Kyree’s only intentions are to get to the draft. KU is ok without that

Wait , is what your saying is that isn’t the dream of any kid? - to live his dream of being able to someday play in the NBA? - -I hope that’s not what your saying. - I bet you ask any young boy growing up and then and kid as they grow older when playing what their ultimate dream would be when playing Basketball is -It would be to be able to make the NBA dream come true - -not just Kyree - -if that is your line of thinking then KU would be ok without every player that stepped on the floor - -

Or maybe I should re-word this a little - let me say any kid that has the talent such as Kyree - what is their # 1 goal? - -it is to be able to fulfill their life long dream of being able to play in the NBA , can’t really look bad at a kid for that - -it’s a job just like for any other person - - making a living - -only he is getting to do what he loves for his job and be paid for it - Hell If I could of or would of had that type talent that would of been my only intentions too - - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • I’d be surprised if Walker goes to college. Reclassifying is just to get 2020 draft eligible.

  • @jayballer73

No not at all. I’m aware that many (maybe even a majority) dream of making the NBA.

  • @BeddieKU23 Heck, I still dream of making it to the NBA. But the Devil didn’t want what I was selling.

  • From a KC star article

    KU coaches meet with Thor

KU coach Self and assistant Kurtis Townsend on Thursday made a recruiting visit to the Atlanta area to see J.T. Thor, a 6-9 senior forward from Norcross (Georgia) High School. Thor, who visited Oklahoma State last weekend, will attend the Oct. 4 Late Night in the Phog as part of an official visit to KU. Georgia, UCLA and Kentucky are are also on his list of schools. He’s the No. 52-rated player in the recruiting Class of 2020 according to Rivals.com.

“At this point right now it is definitely Kansas. They’ve probably made him No. 1 priority the most,” Thor’s brother, Jal Thor, told Cats Illustrated. “Georgia has been on him very hard too. They’ve been calling every day. They’ve pretty much said, ‘You’re our No. 1 guy. We have Anthony Edwards, We need somebody to come in and do what he does just like you, and be on your way out.’ They’re kind of pitching that.’’

Jal Thor added: “Right now we’re kind of still up in the air. We’re listening to what everybody has to say. We want to see kind of what everybody else is doing because he wants to play with a really good guard. That’s why Oklahoma State is in there because they’re close with Cade Cunningham. UCLA has Daishen Nix. So he wants to play with good guards so he is watching that closely. Right now we’re just taking it slowly. He’s probably going to pick somewhere by November, but he probably won’t sign until late.”

Sorry just sounded like you were holding it against Kyree for wanting to go to the NBA - - and with his skills he would be a fool not to want to – kid can do it all - -AN get paid for it

Let me ask you - -if you were a Basketball talent and was sure of being drafted wouldn’t you want to go . - -Doesn’t bother me in the least that he is wanting to do better - -falls right in line with many , many , many others - -be able to play the sport you love AND BE PAID while doing it - - - No Brainer

  • @jayballer73 I don’t know. Sounds like a no brainer but some of these guys and their handlers have no brains. They see only the here and now, they don’t think long term. For some, maturing in college is a better development plan and can help pave the way to more longevity. For others of course, college is a waste of time. The problem, I think, sometimes, is the concept that it is a no brainer as long as you know you can just earn money playing. Do you want to be playing in Turkey, or the NBA, in 10 years?

Promising. Thor is the kind of piece would should be adding since the starting frontcourt is set for the next 3 years.

  • KK Robinson is down to a final 7. Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa St, Texas A&M, TCU, Vanderbilt, and KU.

Self and Townsend are going to be at Oak Hill today to check in on him as well.

    Definitely keeping after him.

His final 7 would make it seem like KU has a great chance if they really prioritized him but I can’t say there’s any confidence that would actually play out that way given how this cycle is trending. I do think KK would be a good fit at KU. Still trying to figure out why he’s a bit underrated to date. The Oak Hill change will probably give a good gauge on whether he’s better then his ranking suggest

  • Not KU but Kentucky Cleaning up in 2020.

Just got Lance Ware (PF) & Terrance Clarke- 2021 5 star stud to reclassify to 2020. This in addition to Top 10 Boston Jr & Top 50 SF Fletcher. Kentucky will probably add 3-4 more as well looking at their likely roster full of guys going in next years draft.

KU needs to make some moves. Everyone else is

  • Self was in for Moses Moody today

  • Will KU sign another basketball recruit ever again? Stay tuned.

  • @BShark Great question. If you go by 247sports list of the top 100 in the 2020 class, it’s not clear that the answer is yes. Out of the top 50, 25 have signed or at listed at 100% predicted to a school. Out of the 51-100 pool, 40 are signed or 100% predicted. For the dwindling number of unsigned, KU is listed as one of the top two predictions just once - and that’s second to OSU for Bryce Thompson.

I assume that HCBS and staff will pull some rabbit out of the hat once some of the unsigned players miss out on their first choices, but is there anyone out there that wants to play for KU???

  • Here’s how it appears to me. I always thought Roy put too much emphasis on one player hinging his whole class on him. As soon as he went to UNC where a system to buy players was in place his recruiting drastically improved. I sigh think Roy has any direct involvement in paying players. As soon as Bill showed up in Lawrence recruiting became amazing, some of that was a void at Kentucky, some was players getting paid. Now recruiting looks a lot more like it did under Roy when players weren’t getting paid.

Hopefully I’m wrong and there’s just a black cloud (fbi) hanging over the program for a brief moment.

  • I’m hearing rumblings that Bryce Thompson has Oklahoma as his first choice and is probably headed that way.
