2020 Recruiting
-
Could be we are quite stacked already with many possible returning players from this year’s team. Too many unknowns at this time, and higher ranked prospects want to start, and/or don’t want to be the 7th or 8th player off the bench.
-
@jayballer73 maybe this is what we get building with multi-year guys. Just don’t know where their ceiling is so all tiers wait and see.
Not worried.

Great point.

Ryan over on the phog had a grim view of 2020 recruiting so far. Hearing crickets on what the staff feels confident in or even has a shot with. It could be all about nothing or spot on.
Very weird that Mady didn’t even follow through on his visit.
All the recent blurbs on Caleb Love are pro UNC.
Bryce Thompson isn’t ending his recruitment anytime soon.
I would be very disappointed if we are in the spring with no commits.
KU recruited at a very high level for a very long time under Self. There’s no question KU has been impacted by the FBI trials and this is the continued fall out. UNC went back to recruiting and landing the Cole Anthony & the Joel Berry’s of the world as soon as the NCAA cleared them in the academic scandal. I fear KU won’t be back to that level until the NCAA does or doesn’t drop the hammer.
I’m not advocating for this but at some point Self may have to shake up his staff. He’s been extremely fortunate to have Norm & T but very few elite programs keep the same staffs these days for extended periods of time. Fresh blood may make a difference as well. Again not saying it should happen but its an option the man in charge can make if he felt recruiting misses were a result of that
-
Louisville OUT on Caleb Love. KU or UNC. Neither would surprise me.

Is that what your hearing or is this posted somewhere? Haven’t had the time to look

@jayballer73 We’re playing it straight, and they’re not.
Yeah, and we don’t have much choice in doing so. The NCAA needs to remove its head out of its ass and wrap up their so-called investigation. Time for them to admit that they have - even if the judge had allowed access to the everything that in reality, as far as being true evidence, is nothing at all - only speculation and heresay.

I tend to agree with you, have been saying the same for awhile. With Dave returning and, who knows, maybe even Silvio (even Mitch, if he redshirts), along with Enaruna and Wilson, Braun, Garrett and perhaps Agbaji, plus McBride and Harris I am not the least bit worried. Coach will sign a few players, we all know that, and they will be gamers.
If KU gets some Love, a swing big and a combo three point shooting guard that, my friends, would be a solid class.

CB’S now rolling in for JT Thor to Okla State - - look out. - -if they land Cunningham & Thor -those to by themselves is a very solid class - - then if they top it off somehow by managing to get a commit out of Bryce - -which both Okla Schools are in on him really heavy - -IF they land him - - holy crap = =Okie State becomes an instant threat.
-
I’d be stunned if Love ended up anywhere but UNC from what I’ve been reading.

Heard it this morning. Specifically Louisville had moved on to other PG targets. I agree with @BShark UNC is the leader in the clubhouse but it’s not done until the blood dries
-
We made Mady Sissoko’s final four as window dressing
-
And finally, Josh Hall canceled his visit to NC State. Some rumors out there he’ll pop for Louisville but the plan all along has been wait until spring. So we’ll see

Big lols.
This is a weird recruiting period for KU. Honestly doesn’t seem like KU is even trying that hard. But it could just be a product of having many incumbent players and the FBI crap finishing it’s way into the plumbing.
I wouldn’t be mad if the class ended up being something like KK Robinson and a decent looking big then retain everyone but Dot, Doke and Silvio. It’s not a dream scenario but that team would be alright.
-
I was thinking about this earlier. Even if we sign NOBODY (not at all likely) we can start Harris, Garrett, Ochai, Wilson, and McCormack. That’s not a terrible team. Depth obviously would be an issue, but the fact is we don’t need a ton of bodies just to have them. We can be somewhat choosy and take the guys that fit. I think Bryce Thompson is the best fit since he’s the premier scorer among our guard targets and we’re right in the thick of it for him. Heard his leaders are KU, UNC, and OU. This was a week or so ago so idk if anything has changed. We can also wait and see on Isaiah Todd, who’d be a great fit next to Dave. Get those two and it’s a top 5 team again.

kind of funny we make his final four when he didn’t even show up for his scheduled visit
-
@FarmerJayhawk Thompson and Todd would be the dream scenario.
You are right though KU doesn’t have to add much so it makes sense to go after high impact players first and foremost.
-
Ok let’s hear the theories - -the educated guesses - -the hunch - -personal opinions - -WHY ? - -why is recruiting seem to be such a struggle these last couple of years.
Not that long ago we were right there head to head battling with the elites - -Duke - - Kentucky -N Carolina’s - -for top flight players
Now looks like it is trending that even Oklahoma St - -Memphis - and just about any other Joe Blow school is beating us out for guys. – Soooo what the hell happened? - -John Q Public wants to know. - -Has Bill lost his luster/edge - - - is his staff getting stale? - -have they lost the fire in their gut? -There is something that just doesn’t seem right. - -I mean NOW were even having trouble getting the 40-5o type ranked players in interest - -Are we focusing on the wrong guys? - - let’s hear from others - -tell me whats going on - -what’s the reasoning as to why this is happening - -it’s looking like we have definitely lost or advantage over the Big 12 , Others are gaining ground - -Texas Tech - - hell Baylor has gotten better - - Thank GOD Shaka can’t Coach worth a tinkers dam - -somehow he is still getting talent to go there - - WHY? - -who the frick knows. - - Somebody enlighten me on what the hell has happened - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Oklahoma State and Memphis are BIG MAJOR players now. Penny changed the game at Memphis.

So big that they have made this big of change for KU ?
-
@jayballer73 I think it’s a couple things. Obviously all the federal case BS hurt. @BShark is right, we would’ve gotten commitments from Tucker and Precious if not for Penny acting like he’s Tark the Shark. Another is the blessing/curse of the 2018 class. The staff absolutely killed it that year. Fall commits from Dave, Silvio (who later moved to 2017), Dotson, and Grimes. That essentially built the core and blocked some 2019 guys from playing time. Another is Doke’s injury. If you’re a big, why would you come to Kansas if there’s a decent chance two top 40 upperclassmen are coming back? We’re kind of in that situation in 2020. It’s not a done deal Ochai and Silvio leave after this year. Dave will likely return. If you’re Mady, MSU and BYU look a lot better from a PT standpoint since he’s signing in November. Finally, the lack of NBA studs compared to other blue bloods hurts. Who’s KU’s best perimeter player in the NBA? Wiggins? Yiiiikes. All these in a vacuum may seem relatively minor, but added together they leave KU out in the cold for a lot of top players.

The ONE big thing you mentioned has hurt us ALOT - - - more then some think. - - I think this NCAA/FBI - -BS has hurt us more then some realize. - - I think this opposing Coach’s are playing this to the hilt exp ( -WHY you wanna go to a school that is gonna get slammed by the NCAA) - now I’m not saying that’s happening that we are getting slammed - -BUT these other schools are running with this like Banchi’s and playing it up for all it’s worth twisting it in the favor - - Sucks it’s a cut throat game.
Yet like someone else mentioned - - MAYBE it IS time for a Shakeup with our Coaching staff - - MAYBE we do need some new blood? - -Aaron Miles maybe - -maybe Jarrod come back on Staff? - -I dunno but seems like something needs to change - -were kinda falling off, again even struggling getting the 35-70 range players to even visit.
Someone mentioned this could be a surprise year where we land players that John Q Public has not even heard a whisper of - -just un-settling. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
@jayballer73 For not only recruiting purposes but strengthening our D, a skakeup might be in order.
-
@BeddieKU23 Any guesses on how many scholarships will be available in 2020?
-
@BShark I don’t know. They have another great recruiting class but only 2 Jrs and no seniors. Dontaie Allen still isn’t cleared to play due to injury although ahead of schedule.
-
@KirkIsMyHinrich Greene cost us, Andrew White. HCBS and everyone else fell in love w/Greene’s long-range and form.
A flea circus at best. Not sure5 why he jumped a good Nebraska team for6 Maryland5 bjut7 he did land a late 2nd round pick.
-
@jhawk7782 Helicopter dad situation with White. He got to star on a couple bad teams so at least there is that.

4 seems the bare minimum but there is a possibility its 5 or 6 which would really hurt next years team with the way recruiting is going.
3 Seniors leave for sure. Dotson is a near lock as well to jump early. Agbaji with a big year might have a tough decision to make.
Silvio was out the door if he eligibility wasn’t restored & with a big year might have some good options.
I personally think both have better then a 50% chance of returning next season but its too early to tell.
I’m hopeful we’ll return a core of 9 guys after the season but anything can happen with transfers today.
-
BShark said:

There’s a scenario where KU returns 9 of the 13 players under scholarship right now.
What if Agbaji & Silvio do not return next season and the 5 freshman see minimal playing time due to the core 8 veterans in front of them? That would change what KU needs right? If a Sr Garrett & a Jr McCormack are the upperclassmen left that’s a really dangerous situation to be in.
Maybe the staff is recruiting (without success) in an aggressive nature to make sure such a scenario doesn’t happen but that’s not what it appears to be right now. Boy I hope they can land at least 1 signee in the fall that has high impact potential in year 1 to ease some concerns

Your right my friend - - - maybe this 7 footer whz his name? - -Devion? - -project to go behind McCormack - looks like that’s what we are going to have to be in on at the present
-
Ha , was just talking about finding big men this year for 2020. - -went to 247 and saw where we had a CB prediction for a kid - - 1st time I EVER heard his name mentioned this year - kind of weird how someone had said about how this could be a year where we don’t hear anything about someone and that they might be the one’s we land.
Not saying anything like that about the kid but just weird how this is now: - - Kid named Ryan Kalkbrenner - out of St Louis 6 '11 - - - -216 pounds - - a 4 * - - rated number 74 - - -by 247 sports.
Other Schools involved: - - Purdue which is leading right now at 57 % - - Cloudy/undecided at - - 29 % - - & KU at 14 % - - Dylan Prezkop made a KU prediction - -has a rating of 93 % correct - - other schools are Purdue - - - Stanford - - -Creighton - - KU - - & Cincinnati - -has a total of 17 offers - - just the 1st time I had seen this name - - we shall see. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
Kalkbrenner is a really nice player. One of my best friends is at Purdue and told me he’s THE GUY they want in that class.
-
Kalkbrenner has shot blocking skills but you put on the tape and you would be underwhelmed at a lot of things. Think Lucas with even less skill and mobility currently. Purdue has a knack for these types of bigs. The CB seems out of left field from someone who does that from time to time.
Missing out on Sissoko isn’t the sky is falling but he was the type of prospect KU typically gets. He wasn’t a can’t miss day-1 type guy either. If Silvio/Dave return next season we may not have a grave need for a quality big. I do prefer we get at least 1 though. The Todd sweepstakes could be interesting?
-
Good thing we don’t need a starting center out of this class.
-
@BShark I’m a little confused. I can see why some wings might shy away with all the uncertainty and a lot of guys already on the team. But, the big guys…Doke gone for sure. Silvio, probably. But even if Silvio stays…Mac, Silvio, Mitch…Wouldn’t guys think there is room?
-
@Hawk8086 the staff doesn’t appear to be selling a starting spot. Certainly not at the 5. Enaruna and Wilson can both play the 4.
-
@BShark Agree, but Mac has to stay healthy/eligible next season and avoid being part of our annual big man curse or things could get iffy.
-
Caleb Love is now down to Mizzou, Louisville, UNC, and KU.
Sounds like Mizzou is a lot bigger player than most thought.
-
Window dressing. This is a KU/UNC battle
-
-
The Love visit as scheduled isn’t happening due to Team USA stuff. Will be rescheduled.

Coach saw Gethro Muscaden - - from Aspin Academy in Louisville yesterday - -# 128 - - 4 * - - 6’10 – 215 Center - lots of focus on the 70-150 type players this year - -
