Holyfield

I really hope we land Holyfield. He’s a big need even if De Sousa is back but it sounds like the situations are mutually exclusive. That’s unfortunate as I see a good role for him regardless and he’d have the highest exposure at KU if he had professional aspirations after.
Enaruna (if he signs) I don’t see playing much as a freshman from what I’ve seen of him this spring. The potential is there and your hoping that by year 2 he’s a factor in the rotation. I hope he sees the benefit of coming here. It sounds like the staff is confident
I think it was @Marco that asked would we rather have Holyfield or Silvio and I think it’s a very legit question. Despite posters that get belligerent about it on the phog, Silvio is in fact a 5/C at this level. So if Silvio is back we have 3 PURE 5 men (Silvio, Doke, Dave) which isn’t great in 2019 tbqh. Then you factor in that Mitch is a 5 in a 4s body… We could really use Enaruna and Holyfield as both are pure 4s with actual basketball skill. Though I agree Enaruna probably won’t see huge tick as a FR.
It really is a legit and tough question to answer. What fits the team needs the most. Both players have differing skill sets. In a perfect world you have both to use. It doesn’t seem like we can have both however.
Silvio- knows the system, best rebounder on the team, top 3 athlete on the team, raw, inexperienced, high motor, limited shooter.
Holyfield- can stretch the floor, shot blocking presence, good athlete, 3 years of D1 experience, high character teammate.
Holyfield is probably the perfect compliment to Doke offensively. That’s if his 40% 3 ball is truly a strength of his game. Defensively because of his versatility on Offense I’d assume he can guard the perimeter better as well. Silvio and Doke are limited here. Can he rebound at a high level? Silvio is a top rebounder and a High % shooter around the basket. If we could take them both and combine talents we have one heck of a player
-
If we are going to have a perimeter full of brick layers, we might as well just lean into it and go extra beefy in the front court. At least that way you might rebound some of your misses.
-
Do we know Silvio hasn’t improved his game away from the basket?

I think it is safe to assume he isn’t going to be draining 3s from the corner at a 40% clip.
-
I don’t think Silvio is a pure center at all. God forbid people have slightly different evaluations of a player, but he’s got a decent stroke out to 15 and handles it well for a guy who’s 6’9 245.

I think it’s fine to discuss. People just get so angry about it on the phog. Offensively maybe a bit of a tweener (4.5) I think defensively he is definitely a 5 and you don’t want him trying to defend out of the paint much.
-
@BShark but! We haven’t seen him play, maybe, just maybe he’s changed his game?

He got to participate in practice didn’t he? I understand practice isn’t in-game experience, but one can gain/improve skills in practice.
-
Do we know for a fact Silvio can’t guard away from the basket? He didn’t exactly have time to learn the system when he came in. As athletic as he is, I would imagine SDS could guard wings and stretch 4’s pretty easily knowing the system.
Honestly, I would call SDS a traditional 4 rather than a pure 5.

@jayballer73 it would crowd the front court and indications are Holyfield wants to start or at least play 25 mpg.
But if Holyfield is a 4 - - Not that crowded - If he is someone . - -who want the majority of the minutes? - - -PASS - -if that’s the case sounding more and more like All for me guy - - NOPE - thanks anyways. - he COULD start - and come close to those type of minutes from the looks of things the 4 spot isn’t gonna be that deep. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Again Silvio would chances more then not - -BECAUSE of limitations of outside game - -would be another five. - -So that means he wouldn’t be competing with Holyfield for playing time. - -Silvio for sure can be a shot blocker - -for sure tough rebounder. – If anything you would or quite possibly be Holyfield starting at the 4 and Mitch giving him those limited minutes for blows that people are talking about. - -Holyfield would be most likely getting his 25 minutes that he wants - - Mitch would be getting what about he has always got - -8-12 minutes. - Then you got Doke – Silvio - - - & Dave at the 5.
Mitch has the D-1 experience to fill his role for his minutes , Silvio experience would not be an issue at the 4 - -cause he wouldn’t be at the 4- -Mitch might be a little better defender on the floor then Silvio - -and just has the ability a lot of the time when he gets beat can re-group and still block the shot. - -Just not seeing the issue about this - seems pretty simple - -again seeing as how Silvio more chance then not will be playing the 5 - -possible a few minutes at the 4 but majority at the 5. – ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

I could buy this. It’s a dying position is the thing. I hope he is in fact able to defend very mobile and quick college 4s. Hell, I hope he gets to play for KU…
-
@jayballer73 Okay, I’ve stepped away from the pipe, but just for a moment Lol… I’m not implying that Holyfield is more athletic than De Sousa (hell no!), only that Holyfield coupled with Dok would be a better fit. Holyfield would be a one year pickup, as would - if ruled eligible - De Sousa. If I had my pick I’d choose Holyfield.
-
I’m loyal to Silvio, he’s a Jayhawk!
-
I would not guarantee SDS only being here one season if he gets cleared. Very much puts him in a similar scenario to Doke. He’d be a very young Sr and his draft stock is just not going to be there (without total domination) and just a season away from having a degree.
I only expect SDS to leave if he’s projected to get drafted. And I don’t expect him to get that feedback.
-
@Kcmatt7 If he were to play this coming season I would expect for him to play well enough to be drafted, even if only flashing a ten or twelve ppg average, atheticism, rebounding and defense.
-
@Marco He’s, at best, a worse version of T-Rob. The NBA chewed up T-Rob and spit him back out. I think the road to the NBA will be a tough one for SDS.
-
I actually think he has a higher ceiling than Robinson. I doubt he’ll ever make it in the NBA, though.
-
I think SDS could be a double-double machine. We just saw the surface scratched with him. What we saw vs. WVU in the conference tourney was what I would expect him to resemble

ya , as much as I would like - IF he is cleared - -I too believe it would be only for the upcoming season , as we once again would fall into the NBA theory of potential. -I think Silvio has tons of potential and with Silvio’s body - the kid is chiseled - and terrific athlete or again potential wise - with his rebounding ability - just think it would be one year. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

KU is all but out here.

I’m guessing good news on another front…
Holyfield to Illinois seems likely.
-
@Hawk8086 From a recent KC Star article
It is believed KU is not heavily pursuing TJ Holyfield, a 6-8, 227-pound graduate transfer out of Stephen F. Austin, who recently announced a list of KU, Illinois and Texas Tech.

My guess was always that if we could give him a starting spot he’d be here. I still expect that to be the case, but the way things are shaping up it looks more like we land another big.
What sucks is that I’d most definitely rather get Holyfield than Precious. But it is what it is.

Exactly. He’s not going to go somewhere to be a bench cog. He wants to showcase in his last year to hope to go pro. Especially after his injury, you know he wants to show out.
If the staff has basically quite recruiting him (coming from Bedore, who is probably being fed that info by the staff) you know they must really feel good about their chances elsewhere.
-
Yea I’m having trouble getting a read on everything. My guess is we are trying to land Precious on top of getting De Sousa back.

Sure. I think it’s a few things. Getting Enaruna makes getting a body less important. And they can’t promise Holyfield will start given Silvio. If Silvio’s case goes sideways then KU feels they can land Precious or a guy like Shak Juiston to plug a hole. And there’s some concern since he didn’t play last year.
-
Would he have been a better option than Silvio?

Had a good stat line from last nights game although it was against cupcake st
