I spent my Saturday afternoon bucketing water away from my house so it wouldn’t flood as I waited for the utility guy to get here to shut it off. Save the house but not looking forward to the pipe repair bill!

I know all too well about water heaters. Once mine goes and it isn’t under warranty, I’m getting a tankless one.

Do you not have a master shutoff? Plumbing is not terribly complicated and if you have the right tools Nd aces to YouTube a lot of the repairs are not that complicated.

@Crimsonorblue22 froze and burst. Don’t know exactly what yet could be a couple different pipes. I didn’t want to dig and maybe make things worse. Then of course no one could get out here before it got dark. But the water is off now so the immediate danger is gone thankfully.
@JayHawkFanToo I didn’t have a tool to shut it off nor did I know exactly where it was. It wasn’t something I thought to ask my dad before he passed. Turns out near the edge of the property line and I am on 10 and a half acres. Thankfully the water district guy was home and actually lives fairly close. I’m not repairing it myself. I’d rather spend the money than do the work and thankfully I am at a place in my life where I can afford that.

If you look where the water comes into the house, there should be a valve that shuts off water to the entire house. Now, if the break is outside the house then it is different but it should not affect the house. We engineers like to fix things.

This is a water line outside the house. The first thing I did was turn off the water to the house (from inside) and it was still gushing outside.

This got fixed today and the bill wasn’t even that bad.

@mayjay I called and they said depending on the amount they might cut me some slack.

@BShark We who live in the county outside the city limits of Columbia have to pay about 50% more to the city for our water. They also charge a measured amount calculated at almost twice the amount of the water bill for the sewer system. And those of us with pools get no setoff for the fact that much of our water does not go into the sewer. So we are paying close to 3 times the rate as city residents 500 feet away pay for water. The SC legislature and courts find nothing wrong with this!

@mayjay Yeah, I have to pay an improvement tax despite owning a water softener. Which was needed because the water was so bad.

@BShark If you go tankless, make sure you maintain it (or have it maintained) yearly or you’ll be wishing you had a regular tank type heater.

Our water is so hard I have to replace our tankless heater every 2 years. (Springs a leak in the heating coil) It’s been under warranty every time, so it’s just a free upgrade. However I get to do the work and there is usually a day of no hot water.
