Ranking the Big 12 Coaches.

    1. Self

    2. Huggins

    3. Kruger

    4. Beard

    5. Dixon

    6. Weber

    7. Boynton

    8. Prohm

    9. Smart

    10. Drew

Just my take, someone might put Shaka and Drew higher.

  • I would go with: 1. Self 2. Higgins 3. Weber 4. Kruger 5. Drew 6. Dixon 7. Beard 8. Prohm 9. Smart 10. Boyton

    1. Self - - -2. Huggins - - - 3. Dixon- - - 4. Beard- - - 5. Kruger- - - 6. Smart- - - 7.Prohm- - - 8.Drew- - - 9Weber- - - 10 Boynton

  • 1- Self

    2- Boykin

    3- Beard

    4- Huggy

    5- Liberace

The rest are unmentionable. I went with Boykin after they manhandled us twice in the regular season. I thought his preparation as a coach was exceptional. Beard took Tech as far as anyone else has done ever. Liberace makes it for beating Tucky, and Huggy’s teams always compete.

  • IMHO, the two coaches that stand above the rest at this time are Self and Huggins with Weber, Kruger and maybe Beard on the top half with the last 3 in no particular order and Kruger having lost ground last season. The rest of coaches are in the bottom half in no particular order other than Dixon near the top and Smart being at or near the bottom because he has seriously underperformed in relation to the personnel he has had.

  • Y’all hold Lon Kruger in much higher regard than I do (as a coach) Yes, he’s had some good teams - when they were NC caliber loaded. But he’s also taken some incredible talent and snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Nice guy - not a great coach, imo.

  • @JayHawkFanToo After looking at the these coaches the league as whole does lack some top level coaching.

  • From a statistical standpoint:

    1. Self
    2. Beard
    3. Drew
    4. Huggins
    5. Prohm
    6. Weber
    7. Dixon
    8. Kruger
    9. Boynton
    10. Smart

To calculate this, I did two calculations, albeit flawed ones (for several reasons that I won’t go into). But it is just another way of looking at it.

The first calculation is how many standard deviations the coaches win percentages are away from each other, at their current school.

The second calculation is actually two calculations. The first part is how much better or worse the coach is doing than that program’s historical record. From there, I calculated the standard deviations away from each other again.

I then added those two numbers up. To me, this accounts for general wins and attempts to put in perspective how much harder it is to win at certain programs. It’s a decent way to look at it IMO.

If I were personally ranking them:

    1. Self - Not close
    2. Huggins - while statistically he hasn’t done as well as a couple of others, he has been successful at every single stop and is a HOFer
    3. Drew - He wins every year at a school that could probably care less about the program.
    4. Beard - I think he will recruit and coach well enough to be successful.
    5. Dixon - I think big things are coming from him soon
    6. Kruger- Went to a FF with his own players
    7. Weber -Went to a FF
    8. Boynton - Seems like he will be able to put together decent teams at OSU. But I don’t think he will ever be an amazing coach.
    9. Prohm - If he didn’t inherit the Mayor’s players, he would be royally screwed.
    10. Smart - Can’t win even with more talent than 7 or 8 of the other coaches.

  • @nuleafjhawk Lon is a Top 25 coach. Most years they will qualify for an NCAA bid, and land somewhere in the Top 25. Then he has his rebuild years. Trae Young was a once in a lifetime signing for Lonnie, and at least they ended up playing a game in the NCAAs. Beyond that, he is not that great of a coach, imo. Although, I give him props for taking that crew led by Buddy for the whole 4 years. That in itself might be Lon’s greatest accomplishment.

  • After looking at this, I will have to put Chris Beard in front of Lon.

    http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/team/schedule/_/id/2641/texas-tech-red-raiders

Tech didn’t know what a basketball looked until Bobby Knight arrived. TT was a Whisker and a Sousa rebound away from a Big 12 Championship, playing us with an injured First team Big 12 point guard. The man, along with Jamie Dixon know how to coach. If the Texas schools get better at basketball, the Big 12 will stay together for a long time.

    1. Self 2. Huggins 3. Beard 4. Dixon 5. Drew 6. Kruger 7. Weber 8. Boynton 9. Smart 10. Prohm

I think Dixon’s building something great in Fort Worth. Also thought Boynton had Ok St playing at a high level for what he had last year. I get the feeling that Lon is over the hill. Prohm seems like he is going in the wrong direction with his own recruits. Weber is fine with X’s and O’s but a train wreck managing personalities. Drew is a helluva recruiter, whicn makes up for being a X’s and O’s featherweight.

  • @wrwlumpy I think you put Drew way too low after what he inherited in Waco, he hasn’t faired well that often in the dance but he’s solid IMO.

    1. Self

    2. Huggins

    3. Kruger

    4. Dixon

    5. Drew

    6. Beard

    7. Prohm

    8. Weber

    9. Smart

    10. Boynton

  • 10 Self - Only won 1 title at school that should win every year.

9 Smart Can’t be too good to because Texas don’t care 'bout no basketball.

8 Kruger Coached at a bunch of schools, can’t be good.

7 Boynton Which team does he coach for again?

6 Prohm Got to give him some credit for coaching in the middle of a 50,000 square mile corn field.

5 Huggins He really rocks those outfits!

4 Beard Give him credit for even being able to find Lubbock.

3 Scott (drew) Rebranding by changing his name to Drew Scott is going to move him to the upper echelons of coaches.

2 Dixon He coached at the school (Pitt) where my Mom played college basketball. Nuff said.

1 Weber I have fresh memories of the delicious steaks I grilled tonight on my Weber grill. You didn’t think I’d rank him #1 because of his coaching, did you?

  • None of them are worth spit without players.

    Self is best with players.

Not one of the rest of them has ever even tied for a B12 title, even when they had good players.

Ranking the rest is placing them in order of futility.

It’s not polite to kick them when they’re down.

  • @jaybate-1.0 Weber did tie for a title in 2013, but KU beat them, 3 times that year. That was a fun Big 12 tournament to be at!

  • Self has won the league 2 or 3 times with a whole new starting 5. That tells you about him and about the other coaches.

  • @wissox Barnes and Hoiberg were very good coaches. Huggins is alright. The rest are pretty average.

  • @KUSTEVE I’ve always kind of secretly rooted for Kruger. You know - the local boy makes it big story. Seems like a good guy. I just don’t think he a great coach. Let’s put it this way, if he was announced as KU’s coach, i’d be pretty disappointed.

  • @nuleafjhawk He was one of my favorite players growing up. I think lonnie is a genuinely good guy, but his teams play no defense, which always limit their upside.

  • Lon Kruger is a poor man’s Larry Brown and I mean that in a good way. He’s built winning programs in just about every part of the country. He’s in the NCAA tournament far more frequently than not. He also doesn’t get the credit he deserves for building Florida basketball up and establishing that foundation for Billy Donovan to step into a great situation and elevate Florida even more. When you talk about the 5 best programs over the past 25 years, Florida has to be in there with their 5 Final Fours and 2 national championships. At worst, they’re the 6th best team of the past 25 years. Lon Kruger laid that foundation.

I think Drew gets good recruits without having to be very good at it. A lot of his players Mamas want their boys at a Christian college. I suspect he has more good high school players who want to come to Baylor than he has room for, so he can take the cream of the crop talent-wise.

  • @bcjayhawk A 110 year history of .495 basketball would tend to disagree with you…

The guy is a good recruiter. If not exceptional, considering the program he is at and how bad his hair looks.

  • @approxinfinity

Dixon inherited and recruited some good players and has done well so far. At Pitt he started strong but by the end of his tenure the fans were ready for him to go. Too early to tell how it will turn out at TCU; so far so good but we will see if he can keep it up and get better. Webber took a team of players (other than Wade) that might have not started at other Big 12 teams into the Elite 8 last season beating Kentucky along the way. Pretty good X-and-O coach but cannot/seem to recruit or keep good talent but does well with what he has. Drew and Smart have had lots of talent but underperformed in relation to the talent; Smart much more so than Drew. Phrom has not impressed so far but he will have a talented team next season and it will be make or break for him.

That’s right! He tied for first with OPM (other people’s material).

    Then he finished…

    5 6 8 6 4

KSU needs to fire him and bring him back to coach OPM every three years.

  • Re Kruger—to last, you have to be able to embody how an alumni base wants to see itself, and win so much they can’t tire of you. You also have to like where you are and not want greener grass. Lon wants greener grass and isn’t how alumni want to see themselves. LB had the same issues. But both were/are superior coaches.

  • If I were ranking, I would have to start at the bottom with Prohm.

He has never done anything of note.

Weber would be 9 because he usually has a couple of good years at a program before they fall off.

Kruger would probably be next. He’s a good coach, but he also tends to fall off after a few years, then move on to a new school.

Boynton hasn’t had a ton of success yet. I think in a few years he will be a few spots higher.

Smart is another solid coach with up and down results. He has re-made his squad almost on the fly. I think they are about to have a nice run.

Dixon, Beard and Drew all have interesting situations, but they have been able to succeed.

Huggins wins wherever he goes. Period. He had a long, successful run at Cincy, and he’s had a nice run at WVU.

And of course Self ranks at the top of this list.
