2019 Recruiting
-
I was (still am, actually) a doubter on Hurt. While he is skilled, his lack of mobility and athleticism worries me as it puts a ceiling on his potential. He’s very skilled, but I worry about him on the defensive end, and on how effective he will be as a rebounder at the college level.
-
@justanotherfan I think he will be a terror at the college level. NBA level is where it gets murky imo.
-
He’s a college and NBA stretch 4.
-
I think that is highly possible. That could also turn him into a four year player at KU. I see three basic scenarios for Hurt:
-
As the game continues to evolve, Hurt struggles with the pace and his lack of athleticism makes him a 20 mpg player with a high offensive upside. 35% chance this happens, as I can’t see him suddenly becoming a completely different athlete. The pace of the game and being on the floor with better athletes able to execute traps and such could really fluster his offense, and he may not ever be more than an average defender.
-
Hurt is a great, sometimes dominant collegiate player, but with no place at the next level, he grows from all conference as a sophomore to All American as both a junior and a senior, but still only garners a second round NBA selection. 45% chance this happens. He’s such a skilled player that it should translate against all but a few teams each season, meaning he will rack up big numbers against less skilled players that simply can’t exploit his average athleticism on either end.
-
Hurt’s game translates, and he ends up playing at KU just two years before moving on to a solid NBA career. 20% chance this happens. Again, because I don’t see his basic athleticism changing, its more likely that he is a good college player than that he becomes a pro before he graduates.
-
-
Mike Daum without as much girth to him?
-
It’s tough to compare Hurt and Daum.
For one, Hurt is much more highly recruited than Daum was. Daum was not a top 100 player coming out of HS.
For another, because Daum wasn’t highly recruited, he was able to come into a smaller program, where the demands on the defensive end weren’t as high, particularly early in his career. At a lower D1 school, Daum could “hide” on a non-threat defensively since most low majors only have one interior player that is dangerous, sometimes none. As a high major recruit, Hurt won’t have that benefit, as the competition in the Big 12 will place more demands on him.
Think of a guy like Chase Jeter He went to Duke, barely played for two years, now he’s a bust trying to find his way at Arizona after averaging 2 points and 2 rebounds for two years. Hurt’s situation will be more similar to Jeter than Daum when it comes to expectation. He will be expected to play and produce.
The good news for Hurt is that he is a skilled guy, so he has something to fall back on.
-
Your right the comparison is hard because the comparison isn’t equal. Hurt is a highly touted kid, Daum wasn’t. An immediate comp hasn’t really come to mind. Sam Dekker maybe the best one I could find otherwise.
-
I can’t say I have seen Hurt play much other than highlights but he sounds a lot like Perry Ellis did in HS. Interesting, Future 150 list athleticism as one of his strengths.
-
@JayHawkFanToo Perry didn’t shoot 3’s like hurt does
-
I think you made the best point with Hurt not having any good comps.
Dekker is a better shooter and athlete than Hurt (probably also a better ball handler). Dekker was a true wing player coming out of HS. Dekker ranked in the top 10 coming of out HS, but as I said, he was better than Hurt both athletically and skill wise in my opinion.
Frank Kaminsky was bigger (obviously) but not as far along as a ball handler or shooter coming out of HS. He was a three star recruit, though.
Hurt is more advanced skill wise than a guy like Perry Ellis. Hurt is also bigger than Ellis. Athletically, this might be the closest to a push, but Perry isn’t a good comparison size wise. Perry was a four star recruit, so that’s a better comp skill wise, but if he’s not as athletic as Perry (who struggled as a freshman to adapt to the pace and athleticism) he may not translate. If he is as athletic as Perry, he could have a heck of a career.
Hurt is a better shooter than a guy like Dedric Lawson, but probably isn’t as strong as Lawson was coming out of high school. That makes it tougher to figure if that will translate.
It’s really hard to find an elite recruit to compare Hurt to. He’s not as athletic as most of the higher level recruits, but his skill is obvious when you watch him. You just don’t see many top flight recruits that lack above average athleticism.
A bigger Perry Ellis doesn’t seem like the right comparison, although maybe it is. I need to watch him more to figure out if that’s a good comp athletically.
-
Perry Ellis might actually be a good comp overall. Ellis was a fringe Top 25 player for most of his HS career as well. I don’t see Hurt dropping too far from where he is currently but maybe by the end of the class he’s more bottom 10 based on ceiling.
Hurt’s biggest struggles I see in College is defense and dealing with bigger athletic guys. Once he learns how to compensate for it with his skill I see him making a major impact.

Perry did not take as many shots because that was not his role on the team and he played primarily inside until pretty much his senior year when he was allowed to step outside and hit the long shot; however, he was a very good 3 point shooter.
- FR - 2-3, .0667
- SOPH - 8-17, 0.471
- JR - 18-46, 0.391
- SR - 28-64 0.438
Career - 56- 130, 0.431
-
I know that’s why I said that. Perry was an inside player only in high school.
-
Perry shot 37-60, 0.617 in HS. Perry was always able to hit the 3.
-
This is a little older comp but he reminds me of Keith Van Horn.
-
The Van Horn comp is an interesting one. I don’t remember what Van Horn was like coming out of high school, but he was certainly a force in college. I feel like he might have been more athletic than Hurt is, but we are talking about a guy that was finishing up college versus a senior to be in high school. And that was 20 years ago.
Hurt is maybe the toughest player to comp that I have run across.
-
Another player that comes to mind is Kyle Singler also Shane Battier and Lauri Markkanen.
-
Battier was an extremely good defender. That’s likely where Hurt would struggle most.
Singler was more of a guard in HS, so I don’t know if positionally that’s as good a comp.
I like the Markkanen comp, except that Markkanen is so big. He was skinny coming out of HS, but he was a legit 6-10, and was closer to his current 7-0 by the time he arrived at Arizona. If Hurt gets to that size, that’s a good comp, but I don’t know that Hurt will ever be a footer.
-
All 3 of them played PF in college and Singler had a game fairly similar insofar as being skilled inside and being able to step outside and hit the 3.
-
I agree about Singler’s role at Duke. Duke had a crowded backcourt and that allowed them to get their best five on the floor. Singler had good size to allow them some positional flexibility.
But in high school, Singler was absolutely a guard.
He’s a guard. That’s not Hurt’s role. Hurt handles the ball some, but he’s not a primarily perimeter player like Singler is in his high school highlights.
-
@justanotherfan Pekka??
-
He was listed as a PF in HS and I just don’t see him playing guard although he did play guard for a few minutes in the Oregon HS title game against Kevin Love’s team (Lake Oswego?) when the PG fouled out but prior to that he was matched against Love. I see a big with ball handling ability bringing up the ball after a defensive rebound but not a guard. Have you seen Kevin Durant play? Often when he gets a rebound he brings the ball up court himself and no one will call him a guard. He was listed and played PF for Duke and he is listed as SF in the NBA. We just agree to disagree.
-
I agree with you that he was listed as a PF and defensively, he played PF. But offensively, Singler was used as a guard. He usually caught the ball facing the basket near or beyond the three point line. He brought the ball up the floor quite a bit. He very rarely posted up.
He wasn’t the PG, as you correctly observe, but when he got rebounds, he rarely outletted the ball to a guard. He brought the ball up himself most of the time.
As one of the bigger players, he played inside on defense, but if you ignored his size and watched him on offense, he was used like a perimeter player.
That said, the comp with him and Hurt is interesting. I think Hurt actually may be the better shooter, but Singler was far and away the better ball handler.

KU offered 2020 Julian Strawther. Seems like KU has a real shot. Elite wing talent.
-
He and Greg Brown are legit KU options in 20. Also not a shock, but sounds like the U18 targets have really liked playing for Self.
-
Ya I was getting all excited as I was reading about some new names from 2020 thinking ok let’s see what we got here. Jaden Springer said we had reached out to him - - -jacmyen Brakefield said we had reached out to him - - - -Brandon Boston said we had reached out to him - -& Jabri Abdur- Rahim -said we had reached out to him - - So I thought cool , so went and looked where their ranking was on 247 - - Brakefield - -is 15th - - – Boston is 19th - - Rahim is 20th - - & Springer is 21st - -thing is we are nowhere really with any of them as a matter of fact none of these guys have us listed in their top 5 schools.
Springer is 100 % NC - - - -Brakefield is 100% Kentucky - - - Boston is 100 % Duke - - -& Rahim is 100 % Georgia. I realize the reason being is that right now their only predict might be one or two analysts making predicts so can’t put ALOT of stock in it as it’s way - - way early for 2020 but kind of burst my bubble a bit lol
On another note saw where we got a CB for Hurt from Dale Erin he made his CB at midnight this morning we are now sitting at 58% compared to others 17% - man I want him - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
@jayballer73 Got a real chance at Hurt.
I would recommend getting familiar with Julian Strawther (2020).

Yeah, encouraging stuff there. I’m half wondering if KU has a shot at Anthony now. Would be insane.

Wouldn’t that be sweet - -not sure how you feel probably good but just since I’ve seen him in these games I’ve come away even more impressed. Rebounds pretty decently - -had 3 blocks last night - - may not wow you - -not flashy - - just solid, really solid - and man he can drain the 3, shown that throughout these games. It can’t do anything I don’t think but help getting to play some time under Coach Self right now - -see how Coach handles game situations.
Coach has been playing Robinson-Earle and Hurt AND Grimes together at different times during these games and I think it’s so he can see how they handle playing on the floor together and them be able to play with one another - -Now Coach would NEVER say he had done this intentionally , but don’t kid yourself. - You don’t win that many games gain that stature - -get voted into the Coach’s hall of fame by being stupid lol. - He knows exactly what he is doing.
Again I say it can only help in the recruiting with him for Earle AND Hurt both being able to spend time and get to know one another better keeping fingers crossed

-
@BShark that would be some awesome stuff if we were to get involved more with Anthony - -holy cow that would be nuts. I’m afraid he has Duke written on him though. - - Doesn’t hurt to dream

Top 10 in his class, great talent. Called KU his dream school after the offer and he already has an Arizona offer and Duke/UK sniffing around. If KU presses hard and makes him a top priority chances seem good.
-
@BShark KU has a shot at Anthony. I think we’re in his top 5, with Duke, Nova, Oregon, and maybe Kentucky. A lot will depend on how rosters shake out in the fall and spring. Duke won’t get him if Tre Jones is back and Josiah James, Antoine, and Wendell Moore go there. Kentucky will have a bunch of guards too: maybe Quickley, Green, and Maxey. We’ll be out if Grimes stays for year 2.

Dam that would sure be nice – -I thought I had heard that he pretty much had Duke written all over him though
-
@jayballer73 Talking about Strawther, not Anthony. Duke is the large favorite for Anthony.
-
A full day later and he is still retweeting stuff about his offer. Had a picture of EJ in the latest one (Strawther is also from Vegas).
-
Cole Anthony’s post game interview tho.
-
Imagine hanging out w/self and then coach k.

Might as well link this for anyone that missed it. Video should start at the right spot.

The video started at the very beginning on the iPad, interviews start at the 2:26 mark.

JRE to spend his final year at IMG. Rut Roh
-
Not the best news I’ve heard. But I think we’ll be fine.
-
I hope people don’t try and read to much into this. - Very good chance he is looking to play against stiffer competition then the High Schools he has been playing against - -I don’t think it changes anything recruiting wise - I think we are still in very good shape
-
IMG seems to be most tied to Under Armor, right? That’s ok, if we really want him, we can pay back anything UA gives JRE anyway.
-
KU has landed multiple players from IMG. Actually don’t see this as a huge issue.
-
@BShark - -me neither that’s why I was saying I hope people don’t try to make more out of this then what it probably is - -stiffer competition - trying to get better against better competition
-
Ha, well found a couple of pretty cool things while doing my daily trolling - - cough - -cough. Today I traveled off to the East , visited the North Carolina boards.
1st thing was their fans sure seem pretty confident that as they say themselves that Ol Roy can steal Robinson Earl - away from KU - - I know they are in love with the kid. - -Multiple posts said they wanted him over any other recruit in this class - -They feel ol sniffles because Lester played for him is in really good shape on top of the fact they are trying to really build of the fact that Earl is playing his Senior season at IMG lmao. - they say if he was going to KU he would of never left Kansas - -I call BS.—I still believe we are sitting pretty good and again from all that I’ve read and even said myself - it’s so he can play against better competition
Another article off their board the thread was should KU still be considered a blue blood? - -To their credit most of the UNC fans shot that poster down pretty fast most of the response said most definitely KU should be. Kind of caught off guard because I thought they would have a hay day trying to back it somehow but most didn’t agree with the poster - - He was trying to base of National Championship - -how we had a sucky league and ya da ya da ya da you know ? - -Anyways good night my friends really tired today - -don’t ever get old - -have a great NIGHT. - - rock chalk all day long baby
-
FWIW I like UNC fans more than any opposing fanbase. They hate the same schools we do and have a ton of shared history. Even had some buy me a round of shots after the Elite Eight game this year!
I do think we get JRE though. The U17 games really showed what’s possible with Self’s tutelage.
-
Well a couple of things I read today. one being saw that we picked up another CB for Samuel Williamson like a day ago from Andrew Slater. Kind of hope he ends up here will be a nice 3-4 year player for us.
The other is - - - here is the question and I know we have discussed this before , but read today - it’s about Zach Harvey. Do we still recruit him OR do we drop him?
Well 1st off looks like charges have been dropped from felony to misdemeanor. pleaded no contest on Monday in Wichita. the charges now are - - endangering a child & breach of privacy - - had been sexual exploitation of a child & he possessed sexual explicit image of a child younger then 18. The girl was 15 at the time - -Zach was 16 at the time.
Initially these guys were charged with Promotion of a child to preform sexually explicit acts Zach is to be sentenced July 23rd at 1:30. So what’s your take? - -do we still recruit him OR do we just totally back away?
Now my take - -Hope I don’t get looked at as a pervert about this BUT I think we still go after him. I mean ya it was wrong but he is or was a typical 16 yr old kid. How many teenage kids probably have some form of what would be looked at of pic on his phone with nudity of a female , he just made the mistake of sharing more then likely , got caught up in it - -made a mistake -but like I said been dropped from felony to misdemeanor. I don’t think you cruicify him for this - maybe be put on some kind of probation - community service but I mean I dunno I just don’t think this is serious enough to back away from the kid. - Like another poster said what’s the rest of his background like? - is he constantly getting himself in trouble? - or is this just one of those growing up immature things that teenage boys go through at that age - thinking the wrong way? I could be looking at this all wrong. If I am I apologize I’m sorry but I just don’t see the justification to back away from him over this - -just my take. So whz yours? - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
Sounds like Hurt to KU could happen in the fall. Would be a great addition and solidify a need early on.
