Yep. Looks like KU didn’t prioritize him enough. Lower hoops programs are more willing to put the hammer down early while recruits are lower ranked.

Your probably right. I just hate that this is one that pops early (it’s looking) that’s a top 20 player that KU was on in some way and he’s going elsewhere. We’d be lucky to see one of our other wing targets even pick a school by November

  • From Malik Hall

Kansas: “They talk to me every once in a while, like every two weeks. Nothing super serious there but they are still in there.”

    another one bites the dust

  • @BeddieKU23 Every time I read an article about him it sure seems like he wants KU to recruit him harder.

  • @BShark

We must have some really good vibes coming from our wing targets. I’m sure we’ll track Hall this summer but it certainly doesn’t look like we’ve full court pressed in any way

  • @BeddieKU23 Could have Garrett, Cunliffe and KJ all still around and those are all guys you mostly want at the 3 or small 4. Oh also Ochai, who knows how he develops.

If we are looking at Dedric, Doke and Grimes leaving it only has to be a 4 man class, while needing at least 2 bigs. There are a lot of wild cards though. Cunliffe could be squeezed out, the whole SDS situation (plus he could go pro with a good season anyway).

  • So Marcedus Leech is in fact an ISU commitment, but it’s not public because of something on ISU’s end. They won’t say what of course.

  • @BShark

    Yeah lots of wildcards.

I’d still swing for an elite wing to pair with Marcus. Honestly I have no idea what KJ will do. Usually family likes to stick together so I can see him just moving on with his brother. I think its way too early to know or assume but generally I get that feeling about those situations. A Jr Marcus and a Soph Ochai doesn’t sound bad. Definitely need bigs. Have to swing for an elite guard as well

  • It wouldn’t shock me if Self and co held out for Hampton’s decision since they already have a back-up plan on board that isn’t a big difference from other PG targets. Except for Lecque. I don’t think you can slow play Lecque hoping to get Hampton but we will see what the staff does. I really like Lecque’s game and keep seeing it mentioned that KU has a real shot.

I could see adding Chandler and keeping KJ. It’s going to be KU vs Penny of course. If Dedric ends up being NPOY (not unrealistic) that’s really gotta make Chandler/his dad think.

Not seeing a truly elite wing that KU has a great shot to land. Lots of “ok” wings which make returning veteran options more appealing. Really like Williamson as a long term prospect. I feel like he just need to keep working on his body, the skills are there. Edit: Maybe Josh Green, but loads of other schools involved deep there.

Very intrigued to see how things go with KU targets over the summer. Only known top targets imo are Hurt, JRE and Hampton. Very real chance at Hurt, expect to land JRE and Hampton to Duke in 2019.

  • @BeddieKU23 Sorry here , I understand your conversation is about Hall don’t mean to intrude but your right but I also wonder now how serious we are recruiting Harvey any more? - I just kind of get a feel that we may have back off of him a bit. - Seems like he has slide a little in the rankings AND with his little ordeal that came to light not sure if coach Self really wants any questionable types if even in the slightest cases at this juncture. - Seems like the last 2-3 years we have had our share of limelight in the wrong way. - -Just kind of curious exactly how strongly we are really recruiting him at this point? - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @jayballer73

Haven’t heard much regarding him with KU. I figure that’s a sign we are not actively after him… Maybe it changes.

  • I’ve seen it mentioned that KU will be taking a wait and see approach. Still interested but wanting to see how that legal crap turns out.

  • @BShark ya, kinda what I thought also

  • Well read an article from zags blog just now. Saw where Nico Mannion a 6’3 PG is strongly considering re-classifying to 2019. Said he was taking summer classes and if things went well considering saying going back for his Senior year might be boring.

    He is a 6.3 PG from pinnacle Arizona and is looking at these final 10 schools: - - -KU - -Duke- - -Oregon - - - Ariz - - -Utah - - -Villanova- - -Marq - - USC - - UCLA - - & Vanderbilt -a lot of West Coast schools there curious

  • @jayballer73

Won’t be KU but thanks for sharing! This reclassifying drama is hard to follow

  • @BeddieKU23 So who will it be?

Last I heard/seen Arizona and Villanova were hot on his trail

  • @BeddieKU23 HUGE mistake by the kid if he lands at Arizona

  • @jayballer73

He plays in Arizona now, so that could be a factor for him. He’s from Italy, so he may want to stay close to where he has roots here in the U.S.

  • KU has offered Oscar Tshiebwe. 2019 C.

He’s a bit raw, but he’s athletic and moves really well for his size. He’s got some size and bulk, so I can see him being a real force in the paint and being able to hold his own as a lone big man/ rim protector in the line up.

  • Read yesterday where KU picked up another CB pick for Samuell Williamson , saw that is is up to the # 60 player now , and I think you see him move some higher yet. - -I think he is ours really if we want to take him. Wouldn’t be a bad player. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @jayballer73 Will be an excellent multi-year guy. Very skilled, SMOOOOOOOOOOOTH shot. Seems like KU is pretty serious. Maybe it will be wrapped up by fall.

  • TIFWIW: A poster on the Phog with typically good info has said KU has been nut punched with JRE and that Roy/UNC are now firmly in the lead.

  • From ku sports

As for Evans’ read on Robinson-Earl’s recruitment, his take goes down as good news for the Jayhawks.

“Kansas has been and will continue to be the program to beat,” Evans wrote on Friday, “though Virginia, North Carolina, UCLA and Arizona could have a puncher’s chance as well.”

  • I’m not worried about JRE yet. The staff is still selling the JRE/Hurt frontcourt. UNC is always going to be a recruiting threat (it’s an aweseome place to be) but there’s no comparing the Dean Dome and AFH. The visit should seal the deal.

  • @FarmerJayhawk Hope you are right.

  • Losing out on JRE would be one tough one to swallow. Kid is a beast and Self and co have invested so much time. I think they will get the job done.

  • Hurt is showing out in this team USA game. He is REALLY good. Haters @jayballer73 take notice. 😂

  • Cole Anthony is the clear cut best guard on this USA team.

maybe I am not understanding you right. - -I’m for sure not a hater of hurt looks really sweet

  • @jayballer73 Might be confusing you with someone else. I know there was a poster or two that weren’t impressed with Hurt.

Him and Anthony are the best players in this game and it’s not close.

ya one your thinking about is my buddy that was the one sayin he wasn’t really impressed

  • Ah my mistake then Jayballer.

  • Chubby dude is giving us problems

  • @BShark

I was (still am, actually) a doubter on Hurt. While he is skilled, his lack of mobility and athleticism worries me as it puts a ceiling on his potential. He’s very skilled, but I worry about him on the defensive end, and on how effective he will be as a rebounder at the college level.

  • @justanotherfan I think he will be a terror at the college level. NBA level is where it gets murky imo.

  • He’s a college and NBA stretch 4.

  • @BShark

I think that is highly possible. That could also turn him into a four year player at KU. I see three basic scenarios for Hurt:

    1. As the game continues to evolve, Hurt struggles with the pace and his lack of athleticism makes him a 20 mpg player with a high offensive upside. 35% chance this happens, as I can’t see him suddenly becoming a completely different athlete. The pace of the game and being on the floor with better athletes able to execute traps and such could really fluster his offense, and he may not ever be more than an average defender.

    2. Hurt is a great, sometimes dominant collegiate player, but with no place at the next level, he grows from all conference as a sophomore to All American as both a junior and a senior, but still only garners a second round NBA selection. 45% chance this happens. He’s such a skilled player that it should translate against all but a few teams each season, meaning he will rack up big numbers against less skilled players that simply can’t exploit his average athleticism on either end.

    3. Hurt’s game translates, and he ends up playing at KU just two years before moving on to a solid NBA career. 20% chance this happens. Again, because I don’t see his basic athleticism changing, its more likely that he is a good college player than that he becomes a pro before he graduates.

  • @justanotherfan

Mike Daum without as much girth to him?

  • @BeddieKU23

It’s tough to compare Hurt and Daum.

For one, Hurt is much more highly recruited than Daum was. Daum was not a top 100 player coming out of HS.

For another, because Daum wasn’t highly recruited, he was able to come into a smaller program, where the demands on the defensive end weren’t as high, particularly early in his career. At a lower D1 school, Daum could “hide” on a non-threat defensively since most low majors only have one interior player that is dangerous, sometimes none. As a high major recruit, Hurt won’t have that benefit, as the competition in the Big 12 will place more demands on him.

Think of a guy like Chase Jeter He went to Duke, barely played for two years, now he’s a bust trying to find his way at Arizona after averaging 2 points and 2 rebounds for two years. Hurt’s situation will be more similar to Jeter than Daum when it comes to expectation. He will be expected to play and produce.

The good news for Hurt is that he is a skilled guy, so he has something to fall back on.

  • @justanotherfan

Your right the comparison is hard because the comparison isn’t equal. Hurt is a highly touted kid, Daum wasn’t. An immediate comp hasn’t really come to mind. Sam Dekker maybe the best one I could find otherwise.
